Would you be OK with being recorded?

I was doing some training for work on a live Teams call where all participants and trainer have their cam and microphone on and it's very discussion based. One of the participants couldn't come so the trainer casually said you don't mind if we record this do you for X to watch back? And then started to record.

Would you be OK with that?

Yes I’d be fine with that, this is standard where I work, all Teams/zoom training is recorded and made available to watch back so this wouldn’t be anything new for us

Hoplolly · 02/04/2024 09:00

Yes, it happens a lot at work - if someone can't come to a meeting, if it needs to be referred back to (we record during brainstorming etc sometimes), training needs etc. Pretty standard practice.

crumblingschools · 02/04/2024 09:03

Did you have a problem with it?

mynameiscalypso · 02/04/2024 09:06

It's entirely normal in my organisation for any kind of training / internal presentation like that to be recorded for those who can't make it.

Caravaggiouch · 02/04/2024 09:06

Yes, totally standard in my experience too.

helpfulperson · 02/04/2024 09:07

We also do it. Surely most places do now?

AlisonDonut · 02/04/2024 09:09

I wouldn't

If the training is reliant on discussion then the person needs to be there. Not to just have whatever it is handed to them at the end.

They need to rebook onto another course surely?

Otherwise it may as well just be a webinar.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 02/04/2024 09:11

We do this all the time at work. Of course it's fine. Better if they can make the training and if the training is essential I would make them do it another time of possible as one never engages as much to a recording for some reason!

betterangels · 02/04/2024 09:11

If it's enough to listen to a recording then I would have been annoyed at being expected to show up on a call and not simply listen in my own time.

crumblingschools · 02/04/2024 09:22

@betterangels I’m assuming you would get more from actually being part of the discussions, than just watching the recording, but the recording is better than nothing

Yes, alright. That's fair enough.

No it isn't. The trainer should be assessing as they go otherwise no point in being a trainer. May as well be a facilitator.

Hoplolly · 02/04/2024 09:41

Sometimes "training" is quite basic stuff. Of course it's better if you can attend in person but if not due to illness etc then it makes sense to record rather than redo for one person. I can't see why anyone would get upset about being recorded Confused

crumblingschools · 02/04/2024 09:48

@AlisonDonut it’s not always that easy to have another training session, depends on size of organisation etc

NameChangedAgainn · 02/04/2024 09:50

This is standard at the workplaces I know, for all online training since pre pandemic.

Medschoolmum · 02/04/2024 09:51

I think it's pretty standard these days, unless the content of the discussion is of a sensitive nature.

bluecomputerscreen · 02/04/2024 10:01

pretty standard.
we are allowed to switch off the camera if recorded.
it's in our employee handbook and it's for internal use only.

Icequeen01 · 02/04/2024 10:05

Not a problem for me.

What are you worried about?

thesuk · 02/04/2024 10:06

Completely normal, happens all the time in my work.

Lion400 · 02/04/2024 10:08

Yes. Absolutely fine and pretty standard. Are you not fine with it? Why?

Tempnamechng · 02/04/2024 10:10

This is why i would hate the corporate world. I wouldn't want to be video recorded. I've done face to face training at my own business premises and I've never allowed people to film me or take photos of me at work. Sometime whilst I'm working (not training) customers will pull their cameras out and go to start filming, but I always stop what I'm doing and tell them to stop.

zzpleb · 02/04/2024 10:11

When it's training that is entirely the trainer talking, fine. But not OK if attendees are supposed to verbally participate too. Some people will be uncomfortable to contribute if it's being recorded and will either keep quiet or limit their participation, which is detrimental to attendees and the aim of the training.

bluecomputerscreen · 02/04/2024 10:16

regarding scheduling - we plan for 95% attendance and expect 85% to attend due to unforeseen circumstances.

if a training is mandatory colleages will have to sign in their appraisal form if they attended in person or have viewed and inderstood the training.

Randomname83738 · 02/04/2024 10:38

Yes, happens regularly at training sessions I’ve attended. Sometimes handy to have a copy of the recording to refer back to. Wouldn’t say or do anything during work place training that I would be unhappy being recorded so..

I should add as a caveat, I have attended a few training sessions that were like mental health resilience in the workplace and sometimes we’d be asked to discuss things about managing staff or workplace conflicts etc. If anything confidential (but still anonymous) was said, then those
sorts of training sessions shouldn’t be recorded probably, as they rely on trust and confidentiality.
