What's the small detail in somebody's home which makes you think, "wow these people are very clean!"

For me it's the bathroom mirrors being spotless or dust-free skirting boards

I’ve just discovered I’m really clean. You can run your fingers over my skirting boards and door frames but you’ll find no dust, there’s nothing under the sofa. My wall behind my bin is splatter free, my toilets are immaculate and my taps are shiny. I don’t have any kids living at home though so it’s much easier to keep it like this.

RitaIncognita · 01/04/2024 21:57

No dog hair anywhere, in spite of there being several shaggy dogs in residence.

elliejjtiny · 01/04/2024 22:02

Towels folded neatly and a smell of bleach/flash/loo cleaner in the air. I don't expect this in other people's houses by the way and my house never looks like that unless we are expecting someone important to visit. Then I go and with the bleach and dh goes mad with the vanilla so freshener and the house smells like a chemical spillage in an ice cream factory.

Icantremembermyusername · 01/04/2024 22:05

My bathroom is impeccable now, but only because DD was caught short last night and vomited EVERYWHERE! So everything has been cleaned!
My house usually looks and smells clean because i can’t stand clutter and a frequent hoover (and open windows) means you don’t notice the dirt / dogginess:-). I also shampoo spray DDog after a muddy walk. I spot clean as I go along and always hoover the skirting boards.
However, I haven’t dusted the living room in 8 weeks…

I have a relative that rolls all her towels into neat little cylinders and stacks them on a shelf - just like in a spa. I have literally no idea how anyone has time to do this. If I have clean towels to offer guests, I feel like I'm winning.

I do this 🤣🤣🤣 never even thought about it

When they say let's move the sofa to create more space and there's nothing under there! No crumbs, no toys no clutter hidden underneath

Oh yes!

And folded up crisp packets
Advent choc wrappers
Teaspoons,
Scrunchies,
Dog toys
Dog chews 🤭

Back in the day of course, now I'm a decluttering maniac!

soupfiend · 01/04/2024 22:10

A clean cat flap. Ours is all gungy

No brown ring inside the bottom of cups. Mine used to be fine until the dishwasher broke.

I'll be the third person to offer a tip, sorry. Use denture tablets for a couple of hours soak unless bad, otherwise overnight. I used to buy the wilko brand 😢

Mine is seeing clean skirting boards too. Unfortunately I can't see how dirty mine are unless I get down on my knees - but then I can't get back up 😕

lljkk · 01/04/2024 22:31

If the house is very clean I assume they have paid cleaners. Doesn't mean the people themselves are very clean.

I'd prefer to visit a dusty house, to be honest 😬

FindingMeno · 01/04/2024 22:43

I always notice if the front door and outside windowsills are clean.

The wall behing kitchen bin being splatter free. Never something I've looked out for but have noticed a few times

Yes👊 I did mine today, sides of wall (as in a corner) and outside of bin!

AliceMcK · 01/04/2024 23:34

It’s more than one small thing for me. I’m incredibly snobby when it comes to other peoples houses. I don’t judge, everyone has different standards but if I don’t like them I won’t go back.its why I am more than happy to always host get togethers and play dates.

If I was going to pick one thing though, it would be bathrooms, particularly if there are toothpaste splatter all over the sink and taps. I never use other peoples towels either.

Seedpods · 01/04/2024 23:51

igotbills · 01/04/2024 18:57

Specifically toilet seat hinges and the bottom area/base of toilet! Surprising how often they are overlooked when the bathroom is otherwise clean

Are you invited to a lot of people’s houses, OP? Because you sound as if you’d be a riot at parties.

onestepfromgrace · 01/04/2024 23:51

Paintwork especially if they have children or dogs. Cleaning hand marks and muddy dog splashes off doors, frames, light switches etc is like painting the forth bridge.

The outside doors, steps, sills etc. My Grandmother always said clean outdoors first because more people pass your house than come in.

YellowSunRays · 01/04/2024 23:52

Feeling smug as my house is always very clean and tidy.. would shudder at marks on wall behind bin or anything under sofa 😬
I have a friend who is much more laid back than me and the two things I always notice in her kitchen which never happen in mine are dishes left in sink and the bin overflowing.
It's easy to keep things clean without clutter so I don't have anything out on worktops that's not needed, such as a utensil pot (just messy and unnecessary) , same in bathroom. Good storage is the answer and a quick vacuum and antibac wipe every day.
Beds are always made nicely and curtains tidy.
I can't relax when the house isn't tidy .

StarlightLime · 01/04/2024 23:54

Why would anyone feel smug that their house was tidy? What narrow lives some of you must lead.

Lifebeganat50 · 01/04/2024 23:55

GoodnightAdeline · 01/04/2024 19:18

One of those spotless kitchens where the only items on the worktops are the kettle, toaster and utensil pot.

I don’t even have this-boiling tap so no kettle, toaster in a cupboard and utensils in the drawer below the hob!

My life isn't narrow thanks but I wouldn't want to live in a house with rubbish under the sofa or marks on the wall near the bin.
That's gross and doesn't make your life more interesting than your house being tidy!

Allwelcone · 01/04/2024 23:57

Whatever floats your boat...

Some people love clean and tidy, some don't care, some just try their best.

Let's not judge eachother!

Why? Our old next door neighbours had a kitchen with completely bare surfaces, and appeared to pride those selves on their kitchen look8ng uninhabited.

WhateverMate · 01/04/2024 23:59

I'm wondering if I was a bloke in another life because I genuinely can't identify with this thread and I can't think of a single man I know, or have known who could either 🤣🤣

This sort of thing is lost on me. When I visit someone I do it because I want to spend time with them.

So unless their home is noticeably filthy or something, I'm not going to notice bloody skirting boards or knife blocks etc.

No, neither would I. So I don't.
Feeling smug about it is quite tragic, though.

I don’t pride myself on it looking uninhabited, I just like clear worktops….new kitchen relatively recently so I had the luxury of being able to plan this level of storage into it from the beginning

Because that’s how I like it. Different people do things in different ways.
