For me it's the bathroom mirrors being spotless or dust-free skirting boards

It's got to be the bathroom as that's where you have time to actually pay attention-clean toilet and sink. Clutter free house in general too, there shouldn't be anything on the floor, ever.

Outside of homes, I've been in more than my fair share of hairdressers and hotel rooms with manky skirting boards and it makes my heart sink each time.

Shouldn't be anything on the floor, ever? People can live however they like.
If people who don't live there choose to award points for dust free skirting boards, clutter free floors and well organised cupboards, that's up to them.
They wouldn't get a second invitation to my house, though.

I’m actually pleased when a friend’s house isn’t perfect because it means there is less pressure on me.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/04/2024 19:48

Absolutely no limescale (very unlike my kitchen and bathroom).

Oh me too. And I can safely say my house does not make my friends feel any pressure to go home and polish the escutcheons.

Yes people can live however they like, but if you read the thread title it asks our opinions on clean homes, I gave mine, maybe give yours instead of taking umbrage at mine?

Carpet tiles - in the kitchen!

I have ceramic tiles in ours and they continually need brushing/mopping. How on earth they keep their kitchen floor clean I have no idea!

PuttingDownRoots · 01/04/2024 20:00

Hoovered stairs. Maybe its because the floor is at eye level, but it can be noticeable if they aren't hoovered

No brown ring inside the bottom of cups. Mine used to be fine until the dishwasher broke.

Probably cheaper elsewhere but this stuff is great

This is exciting because I’ve just found out I’m ‘very clean’. All the things mentioned (well apart from triangle loo roll) are bare minimum to me.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 01/04/2024 20:07

Generally can tell because they are quite boring/anal/stressful to hang out with 😁.
Maybe I'm just jealous of their clean ways.

Yes, fair comment. Sorry.

Nottherealmama · 01/04/2024 20:09

A " lounge area" with sofa in the kitchen.

Tiredandbored · 01/04/2024 20:10

Oh bollox, I've friends coming tomorrow, I'm going to need to wipe my skirting boards and clean around my taps now, aren't I??!!??

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 01/04/2024 20:11

Clean to starts off outside the front door, smells, if the house smells nice/clean then as far as I am concerned, it is clean

I hate cig smells, animal smells, stale smells, musty smells, BO smells and property that is not regularly aired and freshed after cooking and using the extract a good one is a must.

perhapsbutno · 01/04/2024 20:29

It's sometimes an illusion. If you came to mine you'd think I was an immaculate perfectionist. Eat your dinner off the floors and go into a '4 in the bed' type forensic search for dust - you wouldn't find any.

That's because you are there. When you're not it's a sloppy mess. Not dirty but healthily messy, dusty skirting etc

And doesn't matter if it's my sister or a best mate, I wouldn't be ashamed of an untidy house, and my friends certainly don't feel the need to deep clean theirs for me - the fact people (any people) are coming over kicks my arse into gear and I do enjoy the result - but not enough to keep it that way for long :)

96redballoons · 01/04/2024 20:33

When my friend took my used coffee cup, washed it, dried it and replaced it in the cupboard immediately. Her work surfaces were always totally clutter free.

Weirdo.

I don’t have a dishwasher but I use a Magic Sponge and it cleans all the brown rings off 👍

One of those spotless kitchens where the only items on the worktops are the kettle, toaster and utensil pot.

A utensil pot? How scruffy.

Rosecoffeecup · 01/04/2024 20:55

Skirting boards - mine are always filthy so I always notice clean ones

Utensil pots and knife blocks being squeaky clean is another one I notice (because every time I look at mine they seem overdue a wipe down)

WittiestUsernameEver · 01/04/2024 21:15

Ah, see, store your knives and utensils in a drawer like me, and then there's no pots or blocks to "wipe down"

ButtockUp · 01/04/2024 21:33

The cloakroom. The skirtings and behind the toilet need to be really clean ( said the woman who has just discovered yellow stains around the pedestal despite regularly cleaning!😩

Stillthewrongsideof40 · 01/04/2024 21:39

The smell and how clean the skirting boards are.
I don’t necessarily think a very tidy house always means that the house is clean. I have a friend that always has a very tidy house, she is always immaculately presented but she and her house always smells like a dirty oven.

Spectre8 · 01/04/2024 21:49

If I had to move something out of the way and the skirting boards are dust free! Only because how hard is it to move furniture and clean behind it..not something even I do w.g. shelves, wardrobes. Then again how often would something need ro be moved to know...hardly ever so I guess a moot point but of it did and it was clean I'd be impressed.

But skirting boards not hidden isn't that hard to clean when your vacuuming is literally seconds to take off the attachment and run it across the top. I mean you already have the vacuum out cleaning the floor...💁‍♀️
