Pretty, clean, safe place to live commutable to Manchester?

We currently live in a desirable suburb of Manchester close to the city but recently it’s lost its shine. So much litter everywhere, so so busy with cars, it feels scruffy and run down. We would like to be near somewhere with more green space that’s generally well kept and pleasant to live in. We have small kids so need to consider schools.
Any suggestions or anyone live somewhere lovely they would recommend?

Where are you now? What about the Disley or New Mills areas?

Rosecoffeecup · 01/04/2024 16:41

Keeprejoining · 01/04/2024 16:42

Glossop has one road in and one road out. Its a bloody nightmare for traffic. Been there twice and never again.

What's your budget? That's the deciding factor!

There's some lovely areas around mobberley, knutsford etc

@NigelHarmansNewWife central chorlton

Withington is the same. It's like the ghetto. Graffiti and alcoholics everywhere.

CherryRipe1 · 01/04/2024 17:03

Didsbury, Cheadle, Northenden.

TVa · 01/04/2024 17:08

Altrincham, Sale, Urmston, Knutsford.
Heatons, Gatley, Cheadle, Bramhall, Poynton, Wilmslow.
All nice, safe, typical suburbs with small to large amounts of green space.

Patchyfadge · 01/04/2024 17:10

I mean most people on threads like these recommended Chorlton.

Can you leave Manchester? I would if I could.

rubyslippers · 01/04/2024 17:12

Go north - whitefield, Prestwich, Radcliffe, bolton
all commutable on the tram / train

strawberry12345 · 01/04/2024 17:12

Poynton!

Hoppinggreen · 01/04/2024 17:14

Marsden or Slaithwaite

Good shout.

Denton/Hyde, Werneth Low is amazing. The Stockport suburbs the Heatons, Bramhall etc are also nice but quite pricey.
Worsely is also nice. I'd live there if I didn't need the train to London

ChoccieEgg49 · 01/04/2024 17:23

Buxton is lovely

Cheshireflamingo · 01/04/2024 17:25

How far out do you want to go? I used to live in Summerseat near Ramsbottom - gorgeous, but my commute to work in South Manchester got a bit much. I now live near Northwich - gorgeous again (you have to pick the right bit), and commute is about 40 minutes.

Sahara123 · 01/04/2024 17:29

I used to live in Lymm, nice but quite big village on the canal . Good Primary schools , is the grammar school still there ? Tram from Altrincham into Manchester. Pretty expensive though , it’s footballer country!

GotMooMilk · 01/04/2024 17:49

@Tatas £600k max. Ideally we’d like a 4 bed but happy to compromise a bedroom for a really good west or south facing garden!

@Cheshireflamingo as long as it’s possible to get into town (ie a train or drive within 45 mins or so) that’s fine for me. I work part time and DH can work from home

@GotMooMilk my DH works in the city centre and drives, takes about 55 mins at the time he drives. Would take longer if getting to the office for 9 or leaving at 5 for example. There’s a train direct to Piccadilly but it’s not great, takes 1 hour but runs every hour. Other option would be to drive to Altrincham or surrounding area / brooklands and get the tram, that would take about 1 hour 10 or so.

GotMooMilk · 01/04/2024 18:21

@User1212 where do you live?
