Pretty, clean, safe place to live commutable to Manchester?

We currently live in a desirable suburb of Manchester close to the city but recently it’s lost its shine. So much litter everywhere, so so busy with cars, it feels scruffy and run down. We would like to be near somewhere with more green space that’s generally well kept and pleasant to live in. We have small kids so need to consider schools.
Any suggestions or anyone live somewhere lovely they would recommend?

Knutsford is lovely and still has lots of charm. Lovely for families.

This one is in the best road in Monton and adjacent to the golf course. It’s a bit of a doer upper and something really lovely could be made of it.

bad news on rossendale is the weather changes dramatically. esp at the bacup/Todmorden end. can be snowed in at Bacup but sunny in Mcr. rossendale is on the way up tho. M66 to Mcr and you can easily get to preston/or skipton from there. i wouldnt take the Express bus as it goes on the M-way and is susceptible to traffic delays

Uppermill, Saddleworth, Diggle, Delph. Good schools, Manchester is 20 mins on a direct train, gorgeous countryside. For £600k you’ll get a lovely house. Dobcross is nicest of all (Google photos of it at Christmas) but property is subsequently more expensive.

If you don’t want to go far, I recommend Monton or Worsley. It’s very easy to commute in from this side of Manchester and it’s full of green areas to walk in.
If you want to go further afield, I like Clitheroe and Ramsbottom. I also like parts of Bolton especially near Bolton School.

I feel like the Worsley recommendations dont take account of the absolute ballache it is to drive into manchester in rush hour from that side of town sorry 😬 no trains or trams so its either car or bus and the east lancs is hell!

Wow Rossendale does look gorgeous! @Iloveburgerswaymorethanishould and any other locals- where would you recommend? When you search it’s the whole valley but where would be the most convenient parts for commuting/most going on?

Came on to say Rossendale but someone beat me to it! Good schools, lovely and green, 45 minutes to the city centre (at the right time) and same to the airport if you're at the Rawtenstall/Helmshore end. Defent public transport too.
For your budget you could get a really nice 4 bed detached and have change!!

We did the move from Chorlton to Poynton, and have never regretted it. Easy access to green space, good schools, nice pubs & restaurants. There is a train to Manchester but it’s every 30 min at rush hour and hourly the rest of the time (I think, I don’t do it anymore). Some people drive to Hazel Grove and get the train from there.

cafesandbookshops · 02/04/2024 14:27

For people suggesting Hebden Bridge, bear in mind the train line only goes to Victoria not Picadilly. I live in Hebden and have been working in Urmston until last week but ultimately I quit my job due to the commute. On a normal day, it took an hour and a half to drive so three hours in total but sometimes more. In November, when a Lorry was blown over on the M62, I didn’t get home until nearly 9pm.

it would have taken me three different trains to get to where I needed to or a train and bus and the trains here have been horrendous so it was actually easier to quit and find a different job! I love living in Hebden but transport here can be very unreliable.

The suggestions of bury/ramsbottom/stalybridge/greenfield are better for transport and are nice towns.

Ah @cafesandbookshops i used to live in Stretford and work in Halifax - nightmare!

goingdownfighting · 02/04/2024 16:51

Appley bridge is lovely and has a train station

Pollyannamex · 02/04/2024 17:00

macclesfield maybe?

hendoop · 02/04/2024 17:02

Lymm is nice and very commutable.

How about stay in Chorlton but move to one of those areas backing onto Chorlton meadows? You can go for miles there. Alternatively a couple of miles south, the residential streets backing onto Stretford or Urmston meadows.

Short commutes, multiple public transport options, cycle lanes and walkability to local services are top quality of life factors for me. I would avoid relying solely on a car and/or single train line if possible.

LlynTegid · 02/04/2024 17:34

I hope OP one of the suggestions works for you. Were it me any one near a tram line would be the first I would research a bit more.

There is an empty place I was going to suggest, but it is only one room and is noisy from visitors about once a fortnight. It has been vacant for several years. The Old Trafford trophy room.

Lymm is nice and very commutable.

Pretty much no public transport and 1hr 20 mins to central Manchester in rush hour isn't that unusual by car now.

Totally 'very commutable' for those without much of a clue.

hendoop · 02/04/2024 18:05

Wow RedToothBrush, no need for that. This seemed to be a friendly thread, I live that way, actually past Lymm and my other half commutes by car to mcr 45 mins

Anyway, back to the topic, there's also pickmere, poynton and high leigh.

Harslingden, ramsbottom and if not too far whalley are nice

Train from Whalley or Clitheroe is 1 hr 15 mins into Manchester Victoria. It’s fine occasionally but wouldn’t fancy it daily. Area generally is lovely though and rates highly on best places to live with good schools inc a grammar.

GotMooMilk · 01/04/2024 16:47

@NigelHarmansNewWife central chorlton

I knew it was gonna be Chorlton! Are you looking to buy?

spudnik1 · 02/04/2024 18:25

Appley Bridge ( last station within Greater Manchester, direct trains) or whitley in wigan ( walkable to both mainline station and local mancheater train station) outstanding primary and very good secondarys

Appley Bridge has canal walks through Lancashire, or fairy glen.
Whitley has Haigh Hall on the doorstep.
Both are within 10 mins of junction 27 m6. On a good day / early morning can be in the lakes within 90mins

Weir is nice. Rawtenstall is a thriving little town with a market. The outskirts are nice as well. Helmshore/crawshawbooth are nice but very very cliquey. Edenfield is lovely as is Ramsbottom… but the prices reflect this.
Im in the quirkiest part of rossendale (have you seen brassic). People slate the place yet there are people from all over moving here and loving it. Feel free to PM me if you do fancy the look and want to know what’s what!!
