Brighton Marathon parking

DD and her friend are running in this next Sunday and I'm going along to cheer her on

Do any locals know where best to park? I'm happy to use park and ride if that's best. Closest hotel o could get was Eastbourne so coming from that direction.

Thanks very much. She was a late entry through a charity so it's a bit last minute.

I think it would be easier to get the train in. The cost of parking in Brighton is ridiculous, the train would be cheaper.

Good luck to your daughter!

Axx · 01/04/2024 10:00

Thanks we looked at trains bits it's about an hour and twenty minutes from Eastbourne so we ruled it out. We need to be there early too.

I didn't realise it would be so bad, I feel stressed out now! Everywhere looks booked up, even the park and ride.

Trains might be your best bet. Massive roadworks at Rottingdean is causing huge traffic problems so I couldn't even suggest the 12 bus. You could drive to Lewes and get the train from there?

mitogoshi · 01/04/2024 10:46

Park a couple of stops along the train line in the suburbs. Works when we visit

Pashazade · 01/04/2024 10:46

As pp said, drive to Lewes park at the station, think all day parking is £7.50, and train into Brighton, it's only 20 minutes.
Although that will likely take as long as just catching the train from Eastbourne. Journey isn't normally that long but bus replacement always adds time.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 01/04/2024 10:47

Just park got anything?

Axx · 01/04/2024 10:53

Nothing on just park.

Lewis sounds good but it won't let me pre book parking and if it's full I think we'd be stuck.

Thanks I thought the train must be quicker from Eastbourne usually. It doesn't look that far!

Bit of a detour but you could possibly drive to Hassocks and get the train from there (about 15 mins on train). Parking should be reasonably easy and much cheaper in Hassocks.

I live quite near Brighton and never drive in, even on a non-marathon weekend purely because it’s so busy and parking is so expensive.

Pashazade · 01/04/2024 11:00

It's very unlikely to be full on a Sunday, there is cheaper council parking the other side of the station (south of the lines that you could walk from too).

Watchkeys · 01/04/2024 11:03

Whitehawk Road, or one of the roads off Manor Way. It's outside the paid parking zone, and a very short bus ride on a No 1 bus to get to the Old Steine. But you're on the right side of the Old Steine anyway if you park there, for the Marathon start line.

I used to live in Brighton and visit regularly, and I also run the half and marathon. This parking arrangement works.

Watchkeys · 01/04/2024 11:05

Oh and if you park there and buses are disrupted due to the race, you can walk to the start line in about 10/15 minutes.

luckylavender · 01/04/2024 11:05

Aren't the trains on strike this weekend? I live in Brighton, travel and parking aren't easy.

Runningupthecurtains · 01/04/2024 11:08

Drive in and drop off your daughter without parking then head out to Lewes/Hassocks/somewhere else with parking on a bus/train route and park up and get yourself to a suitable watching point.

Axx · 01/04/2024 11:13

Thanks very much, I'll look into all of these suggestions.

By the time you've driven and found somewhere to park and then walked in it'll probably take that long.

Bugger. That’s always my go to

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 01/04/2024 11:18

is there on street parking round the station on a Sunday? Or a just park drive?

Roselilly36 · 01/04/2024 11:19

OP don’t even try to park in Brighton, lots of roads will be shut off, Lewes is also really bad for parking. So see what’s available on Just Park, but you have left it a bit late. I assume the bus from Eastbourne to Brighton might stop or take a different route while the marathon is on, could you look into this option? If you are staying in Eastbourne, you could drive to Polegate station and change at Lewes for Brighton, it’s really easy just walk over the bridge to take you to the correct platform.

Not if you've already decided where you're going to park.

Bugger the train from Lewes looked good. Don't want to risk not getting parked though.

Lordy. People saying 'don't try to park in Brighton' are people who have tried to park in central Brighton. The marathon start line is east of town, and there is always parking to the east of the paid parking zones, and easy buses/walk to the start. This has worked for me for multiple marathons, and every time I've been into Brighton for about the last 5 years. It worked for friends visiting me for the 10 years I lived in Brighton. It worked for the half marathon in Feb this year.
