Do you eat lamb at Easter?

Leg is half-price just about everywhere. Just got one in Sainsburys.

The carrots and brocoli are only 15p in Asda too, like they were for Christmas.

I don't eat anything from any animal. Lambs having their throats slit is disturbing if you really think about it. Needless suffering and death.

How would they die if they were wild animals? Not sure being eaten alive by a bigger animal or dying of slowly from disease is much better.

Not a great fan of lamb but made speed to get to Tasman Meats, a low-cost butchers in Melbourne, for the inevitable packs of lamb bones for my dog. One will be his Easter egg tomorrow.

Yes every year, this year we're having pulled shoulder of lamb with pomegranate glaze in wraps with salad and cous cous.

Last year it was a full roast lamb and next year it'll be lamb and sticky figs.

But when you buy lamb you create a demand. It means farmers breed even more of them in order to put them through the fear and pain of slaughter. God knows what kind of people work in the slaughterhouses that kill lambs.

You can say the same about plant crops. The more you eat the more demand there is so more rabbits are shot, more insects crushed etc.

Do you think the little bit of mint sauce left from Christmas will still be okay? Been in fridge. Nobody else eats it and there's half the Colmans. Only a herb so should be okay.

Yes! As important as turkey at Christmas! Lamb is my favourite meat so really looking forward to it. I got two half legs and my neighbour has said to help myself to her rosemary bush. Red currant jelly and mint sauce - ooo can't wait!

Just been prepping my leg of lamb and veg for a roast dinner tomorrow. Lamb is my favourite meat, we eat a lot of meat in our house but lamb seems to be everyone's favourite.
I'm low carb g but be treating myself to a Yorkshire pudding with my meal.

No lamb at Easter. My family's tradition is rabbit in any form; I usually make mine into a hearty stew, served with potatoes and sweet red cabbage.

We love lamb but have been away for Easter Sunday the last few years

Had half of the Sainsburys leg on Monday though. I chopped off the top half and have frozen it 'butterflyed' and will do a slow cooked Morrocan type thing with it

Yup. My sister always hosts Easter lunch with LoL and Leg of Quorn for the vegetarians.

What in the name of the Lord is Quorn leg?
I don’t know why anyone would serve vegetarians Quorn it’s horrible over processed chemical bilge.

No we won’t be having lamb as we only buy British meat. We are having chicken and a sausage plait (and a lovely veg and cheese pie for the vegetarians 😂)

Yes, having lamb and really looking forward to it. I cook mine with rosemary, garlic & anchovy, and I switched from mint sauce to making salsa verde a year or so ago and it's bloody gorgeous.

What proportions of each do you use? Do you just rub it all over the lamb in advance?

Mint sauce lasts forever as it's in vinegar.

And yes! Lamb marinating in garlic and rosemary in the fridge ready to slow roast tomorrow.

My late husband stockpiled Colman's mint sauce when it was Brit week at Aldi because Aussie mint sauce is vile beyond belief. I've still got two jars. He died in 2016. I reckon being mostly vinegar and sugar it has the same half-life as plutonium.

I cut 1-2 cloves of garlic into slivers, and chop a few anchovy fillets into small sections. Then I cut a couple of rosemary springs into sections as well.

I them poke the lamb leg all over with the tip of a sharp knife, going 1-2cm in each time around the fleshy bits. Usually I have 10-12 spots on a large leg, and in each one I poke a sliver of garlic, a shred of anchovy, and a sprig of rosemary until I’ve filled them all. Then I salt the whole leg, pop it on a rack over a baking sheet, and stick it in covered in the fridge overnight.

I take it out an hour before I’m ready to roast it. The long sit time dries out the surface of the joint and makes it brown beautifully. The garlic/anchovy/rosemary will flavour the meat, and you won’t find the anchovies at all after cooking - they will basically melt into the roast.

it’s a lot of flavour for not a lot of effort!

I was a lamb refuser for 20+ years after SIL’s parents invited me for Easter one year. They were sheep farmers and, yes, the live animals smelled like what we’d just eaten…

This year I got to the supermarket too late to buy salmon or trout which is my usual Easter offering, so lamb it was. The 1.2 kg joint was easy to cook with garlic and rosemary, no goaty smell and the family enjoyed it. The dog was highly excited and kept pacing the kitchen until he got a bone. Is this reaction what causes sheep worrying??

I abstained.
