Did anyone sense you were pregnant before you told them?

I don’t know how this can even happen!

I’m 6 weeks and collected a Chinese takeaway from my local. I always chat with the lady, she’s really lovely. As I was picking up the food she stopped me and said, ‘are you pregnant?’

I’d not mentioned any symptoms or anything to her - totally spooked! She said she could just ‘tell’ and sensed it the last couple of times I’ve been.

Has this happened to anyone else? I wonder how people know or whether it was just an incredibly lucky guess!

My mum did, she said something about me had changed and she had just guessed. But I didn't think that was weird because she obviously knows me quite well.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 28/03/2024 21:23

My partners Grandma. I had no symptoms, wasn't even officially late for my period. She said to partners auntie 'if she isn't pregnant I will eat my hat'
I found out a week later.

Newname197373 · 28/03/2024 21:37

Yes. A friend of a friend who i hadn’t seen for about 5years. She was a midwife of 20+ years. I was 5weeks. just found out myself, and hadn’t told anyone but my DH.

My friend once said it to me when I was about 4/5 weeks, I knew at this time but didn’t let on. I went on to have a miscarriage and never told her but I always wondered how she knew.

CeriB82 · 28/03/2024 21:48

A girl asked me if I was pregnant and id only found out the previous day. It was with DD2 and I hadn’t told my mum and she was with me.

4 weeks later i was at the GP and she worked there and I smiled at her and she winked. She just knew!

caringcarer · 28/03/2024 21:57

I guessed my DD was pregnant when she was 5 weeks pregnant with first DC and at 7 weeks with second DC. Her face looked more rounded.

FloofyBird · 28/03/2024 22:09

I used to have a boss that could tell when anyone was pregnant long before they made it official

Jovehansson · 28/03/2024 22:12

My dad knew. I didn't even know myself and when he asked I felt sure I wasn't.

NC03 · 28/03/2024 22:27

I had a dream my friend was pregnant and it was a boy, she was (in the dream) "but I don't know what to do with a boy!"

Told her the next day and she said "I'm 5 weeks"
It was a boy BlushGrin

I can tell sometimes and it's a very odd sensation. I walked into class one day and just blurted out to my tutor: Oh you're pregnant! I knew she'd actually had trouble conceiving for years, so it was an incredibly insensitive thing to say but it was out of my mouth before I knew it, then she told me she'd only just found out a few days before.

Same with a co worker. One day we had to do some heavy lifting and I said, 'Don't because you're pregnant, I'll do it.' She said, 'What are you talking about?' Came in next day and told me she'd done a test and was pregnant. I 'knew' before she did. She kept asking how I could tell and I couldn't explain.

It happened last year too with a fitness instructor - stomach flat as a board but i walked into class and asked if she was pregnant and she was. Again, just blurted out as if something had told me, before my brain engaged.

TwirlyWitch · 28/03/2024 22:34

A total stranger sitting next to me on a bench when I was only about 8 weeks pregnant! We were chatting and she casually dropped in “and you’re expecting a little one next Spring…” I was gobsmacked 😱

SkankingWombat · 28/03/2024 22:41

My cat knew both times. The second time I only took a pregnancy test because her behaviour suddenly started up again as in the first pregnancy. I hadn't even missed my period yet! It wasn't like I was a serial tester and it was just a coincidence either - the last test I had taken was for DC1.

My DM knew too with DC1. We went to stay with her the week before we found out I was pregnant. I would have been 9 weeks but was completely oblivious. DM kept asking if I wanted to tell her anything 😂 "No, what do you mean?" 🤦🏻 I called her a week later to tell her I'd just tested positive and her reaction was "I knew it!!!".

TheSolstices · 28/03/2024 22:47

No, not even when I’d spent the first trimester throwing up daily at work. I told no one other than DH till 19 weeks. Or if anyone guesses someone is pregnant, I would hope they had the tact to keep it to themselves — you’ll know when a woman wants you to know she’s pregnant, because she’ll tell you.

NeedToKnow101 · 28/03/2024 22:50

Yes. I was out with my friend. I felt odd. She said I was being a bit weird and asked if I was pregnant. I think she guessed before I knew.

Lemonnhoney · 28/03/2024 22:53

A college told me she had a dream I was pregnant.. I was! She then asked if I wanted to know if it was a girl or a boy ... It was a girl in the dream and it turned out to be right!

ForestBather · 28/03/2024 22:53

It's not magic. Women's bodies change very early in pregnancy. I've always known when friends were pregnant before they announced it. I've seen people on TV and known they were pregnant before it was public knowledge. I think it's easy to notice these things either consciously or unconsciously, especially when you've been pregnant yourself. Of course, I never say anything to a person and wait for them to announce it.

I suspect this is only likely for people I've seen beforehand.

LadyMcLadyface · 28/03/2024 22:56

Yes, both times - cleaner at work and then my DH's hairdresser 😊

JessicaPeach · 28/03/2024 19:25

It hasn't happened to me but I can do this, people just seem different. I've never been wrong!

Same! I can tell way before anyone is visibly pregnant. I have no idea how and I’m not even remotely maternal or curious so I don’t spend any time wondering about this sort of thing.

However, I also had a 100% track record for knowing the sex…until my friend had a girl a little while ago. So maybe I’ve lost my sixth sense now.

Well, exactly. Notice away, if you’re observant. But keep schtum. When someone wants you to know they’ll tell you. The reason I didn’t tell anyone till 19 weeks was because another condition had been discovered and it wasn’t clear whether I would be able to continue the pregnancy.

I had my DD 17 years ago. I found out officially when I was 11 weeks gone, and only after my male supervisor asked if I was pregnant.

Later I asked him how he knew. He had no idea, just a feeling.

Btw I didn't look pregnant in the slightest, nor did I have any symptoms.

My male boss told me he thought l was pregnant. I laughed at him and said don't be so ridiculous. Turns out he was right!

You really need to start engaging your brain. Or one day you could really upset someone. Even if they aren't pregnant they might not be happy to go public for a multitude of reasons.

SpaghettiWithaYeti · 28/03/2024 23:15

*are pregnant

Rycbar · 28/03/2024 23:17

Not me but one of the children at the nursery I worked at told one of the ladies that ‘she had a baby in her belly’. She was upset thinking the child was saying she was fat! She took a test and she was!

GrumpySock · 28/03/2024 23:20

I would have been furious to be honest if anyone told me that. It is so so intrusive.
Smb told me once with my 2nd baby. It was none of her business, the circumstances were not in any way suitable, I had had multiple miscarriages before. Still makes me angry thinking about it

Oh my mil is always like that too, rolling her eyes and asking "are you alright". I'm probably biased 😬

PollyannaWhittier · 28/03/2024 23:21

I've done it a few of times, not in the spooky way that some mention, I struggle socially so I pay a lot of attention to body language and mannerisms and other clues which I guess makes it more obvious with people I see frequently.
I knew my form tutor in lower sixth was pregnant when she was about 8 weeks. (Obviously I didn't say anything, but when she told us several weeks later my face must have given away that I'd guessed because she came over afterwards and said 'you knew, didn't you ?') Also a couple of colleagues at a similar stage.
