Can we talk about money?

Seeing a lot about the national wage being £35k.

As women can we share our stories, age and salary? I'm 35, been in my industry for around a decade. Currently on 45k, going up to 46k after a little negotiation. Just started the role and am pregnant.

Dont think my new employer was happy (I told them wayyy in advance when i was jus gone 12 weeks) and not expecting any kind of maternity pay from them as will only be in the job 6 months before i have to leave.

Some of my friends get paid 70/80/90k in finance. Whats the average of everyone here?

OP posts:

I'm 32 and on 55k. I've been qualified in my field for 8 years and had a few promotions.

Oh also I do overtime it's paid at 35 an hour and shifts are either 9 hours or 16 hours. I normally do one or two a month. So maybe my actual pay is about 60-62k.

Althenameshavegone · 28/03/2024 20:21

37, working 4 days a week in stressful role that’s around £45k full time, absolutely no progression from here so planning to take a career break and hopefully pivot elsewhere…

Maybe I'm super cynical but I just refuse to believe so many women who are on £80k+ at 30 or whatever are merrily chatting away online on a Thurs afternoon.

OP I'd take a lot of this with a lot of salt!!

39 / £47k / L&D!!

I’m on mat leave, some of the £80k plus people might be too!

Taxidriverinfront · 28/03/2024 20:33

40, my income is £50k, self employed so keep it low for tax reasons.

addictedtotheflats · 28/03/2024 20:38

Band 7 nurse, basic £45K but im 0.96 WTE which is £43K. I do regular nights and weekends and last year earned £51K inc overtime aswell. DP management accountant (part qualified) on £35K

doneandone · 28/03/2024 20:45

I work in a school part time so only on £12k. I'm 46. We chose for me to only work part time to be home for ds who goes up to secondary school in September so will reevaluate then. Dd is at uni which is costing a lot so no holidays or treats for the next 3 years, but we're coping at the moment.

PinkPillow11 · 28/03/2024 20:47

42, my income this year was £125k.

I have earned more in previous years, up to £600k. But I've stepped down from a very big role due to family commitments.

Some days I could quite happily sit on Mumsnet chatting away all afternoon if I wanted to! Other days I could work 18 hours and count myself lucky to grab a 2 minute toilet break.

Hibernatalie · 28/03/2024 20:51

Age 40, just over £64k

PinkPillow11 · 28/03/2024 20:52

@BrandySnaps1 what's your role in finance, rough location, industry, years experience etc? I don't mind discussing my experience. I have a few different finance roles in my team. Salaries range from £35k - £75k, plus benefits and bonus.

Charlie2121 · 28/03/2024 20:57

Mid 40’s with a toddler. I earn just over £200k in a legal role.

Used to work a lot harder for a lot less money when I was younger. I doubt I’d have reached this point in my career if I’d had my child earlier in life.

I've had a huge range over the past decade. I'm 34. If I hadn't had my baby I'd be on quite a bit by now!

At 24 I was on £45k
At 27 I went freelance and earned £120k
At 29 I had a baby
At 30 I was down to reduced hours and on around £60k
At 31 realised my child has additional needs and reduced further to £30k
At 34 I changed my job to fit better with my child and earn around £35k but I only work about 15 hours a week.

I have my own business which has pros and cons. No sick pay or holiday pay but I can have the entire summer off work. I pay into a private pension

What did you do to earn 120k freelance?

Rhdlj · 28/03/2024 21:02

I'm 36, earn just over 20k a year in my day job (work 3 days a week out of choice in a pretty low stress and very flexible job). Have about 10k a year coming in from investments. Own my own home outright.

I was in the unfortunate position of losing a parent when I was barely an adult so I inherited some money early on in life and I made a few investments with that so that I wouldn't have to work full-time in the future if I didn't want to, and now I have a child I am very thankful for the freedom and the work / life balance I have.

I don't earn mega-bucks compared to many of you but I am secure and can afford what I need day to day, and I'm not stressed out working long hours. I have a hobby I enjoy and I feel really grateful to have this life. "Create a life you don't need a holiday from" was what my deceased parent used to say. I feel like I've done that.

bryceQ · 28/03/2024 21:08

@Sixpence39

I was a freelance marketing consultant in a niche sector, acted as a freelance marketing director, at this point I charged £500-£700 a day and had contracts 5 days a week.

Beezknees · 28/03/2024 21:12

I am 34. I earn £24k, will be rising to £26k in a few months. However I am not educated past GCSE level, had a baby at 18 and spent most of the time working minumum wage jobs that would fit around being a lone parent. I have only recently started a role that I can make a career out of.

financialcareerstuff · 28/03/2024 21:12

My Total comp Is about 200K. 46 year old woman.

I am a Senior Expert in a specific topic, working for one of the global management consultancies. Been climbing in roughly the same field for 16 years, after doing an Executive MBA.

I have one child and see them a huge amount. Work is relatively flexible, as I am judged for the impact/results more than the hours. I often work on my laptop after DC is asleep, but can also almost always make it to sports days, parent days, etc.... I travel abroad once every 2-3 weeks, for a couple of days each time, so I would struggle without a supportive DH, who happily takes everything over and covers a lot even when I'm here.

I don't think I work harder than a teacher or nurse. It's just a question of degree and field. The corporate world is far better compensated, though sadly far less valuable to society.

loropianalover · 28/03/2024 21:12

27, work for a government office currently on 29k and it goes up every year on a scale.

37hrs per week, 30 days annual leave, 17 flexi days (work up 7hrs take a day off), bank holidays, pension, feel secure in my job (worked in recruitment previously and you feel like you’ll be let go for breathing wrong!). I’m not a go getter or career minded but feel very pressured to move up the ladder internally for a better salary.

LunaTheCat · 28/03/2024 21:16

GP … officially part time but that’s about 36 hrs per week.
I earned £75’000 last year… if I increased my hrs I could earn more but I would be a complete physical and psychological mess.

JamesBlonde007 · 28/03/2024 21:17

I’m 32 and make £108k as a department director for a financial services company in London. I’m from the northeast and work 100% remote, COVID opened up all these opportunities for me that would very unlikely be possible otherwise.

Ladymeade · 28/03/2024 21:35

I've been a civil servant for nearly 40 years (joined when I was 19) am a manager and earn the princely sum of 29k Where I live is quite agricultural with quite low wages so it's not actually too bad all things considered!

A lot of people probably wouldn't get out of bed for this money lol

Jumpersweet · 28/03/2024 21:43

31 - 31k. Would be fab if it would continue going up with my age each birthday! I find my job so challenging and can't imagine having even more responsibilities within my organisation.

moneythread · 28/03/2024 21:44

My salary peaked a decade ago at 45k in my late 30s.
Then was zero for a bit, then got a job on 16k, and have negioated big payrises since then to get that upto 23k in 4 years.
I'm absolutely screwed if DH dies or divorces me.
But the kids and DH have massively benefited from my lack of earnings.

ChoccieEgg49 · 28/03/2024 21:51

11k a year, but I only work 1.5 days a week 😂
DH around 60k

Sidebeforeself · 28/03/2024 21:55

Why “As women”?

DaisyHaites · 28/03/2024 21:55

33, £110k + bonus, Big 4 Accountancy
