Why are MNers so absolutely fascinated by matters of class and money?

There are so many interesting topic boards on here, but the theme that seems to guarantee eighteen pages of fascination, strong views and disagreement is class and money:

My income is 500k, ask me about my handbags

Does owning a spaniel make me middle class?

I’m a Marchoiness but live in a bin, come and share your strong views about this

AIBU to feel positively sorry for those vulgar enough to have their needs met with expensive holidays to nice places and clothes that fit?

What is it that makes these threads so magnetic for people? Is it the opportunity to communicate the crashing snobbery that would make them unpopular in real life? Or to fulfil their unmet need to stand on a virtual park bench and let everyone know how rich they are (‘although no one would ever know in real life, we drive a battered estate and dress only in waxed cotton’)?

I am sure the class anxiety (and fascination with rich people) is greater on here than in the general population. What’s that all about?

No one on MN is ever MC, they are are either 'solid WC' or UP, but never, ever MC. It is full of lefty loons and trade unionists though, so maybe it's largely true.

Maybe you could ask @GetWhatYouWant who was determined to back up her opinion that the right sort of people don't have dc living at home past the age of 21 with evidence that she only knows a judge, various lawyers, doctors and other medical professionals, accountants, teachers, university lecturers, senior managers, financial services consultants, artists, authors. There are no binmen, scaffolders, builders or any trades, cleaners, shop workers, call centre workers, mechanics, lorry drivers, hairdressers or numerous other jobs in her circle 😂

I'm probably MC. my parents were an SRN paed nurse and a military pilot, and my DHs family were almost the same. One GF was a horse dealer and the other was an aero engineer. Both GMs worked. I went to university, first in family to do so. But we all own and live in similar houses and have similar lives, after 45 years of work. I'm comfortable with that outcome. I do not need to be better than anyone else to be what I am.

I find it seems to be more interesting by people who don't have money or class, sure I don't get it but I don't being fascinated by lots of things

Oh this is hilarious. I was thinking about that post. The thread was about someone’s daughter’s creaky bed! Absolutely nothing to do with class but that poster just couldn’t help herself …sooo funny!!

There was a "proud" workingclasser on that recent handbag thread that gave hereself away on a separate bit of the thread by saying she "wouldn't be seen dead shopping in Primark"Confused

Perhaps they are working class and don't believe in slave labour? Not all working class people shop in Primark.... or is that a defining characteristic now?! Confused

Because Mumsnetters like to brag about how solidly MC they are and are terrified someone might think they are WC.

Well that's me fucked on here then, being as working class as they come 🤣
When I did one of my degrees, my university tutor assumed I lived on a council estate. I just laughed and got on with getting my first.

Your university tutor would fit right in on MN then, because most on here think all WC people live on council estates.

Most regular MNetters, ime, are fairly MC -- whatever they think their origins were. Sure, we all hold opinions, and approach situations differently, but most of us would have a cup of tea and a chat with anyone not facing them down with a lethal weapon. And as a veteran of the 1980s NY subway, late at night, most of the people there were okay too, no matter how deranged or deluded, as long as they didn't attack you physically. I was fortunate, and turned aggression away with gentle words and a friendly demeanour. But I was frequently scared. The experience is not easily forgotten. And I walked home alone most days and nights.

“I don't even want to mention the transphobia as that will bring the FWR regulars swarming. This is not a left-wing place to me!”

Sigh. 🙄

Being concerned about the rights, safety and dignities of women is NOT right wing. And it isn’t transphobic.

I did find the ‘transphobia’ comment a bit odd. I’ve never thought of GC points of view as being right wing.
