What can you put in a wallet gift, that's not money?

I have bought a friend a wallet for her birthday. I know she'll like it, It's embellished with a charm that reflects a hobby she's passionate about.

I know the tradition is you put money in a wallet or purse but I don't want to do this. Friend is not money-minded at all, lives a very simple life and is very happy with that, and I feel money is just not very personable either? She'd not want me to put a lot of money in, she'd not like that at all and putting £20 in seems just crass!

I've thought about a voucher but that's basically the same thing Grin, she's quite crafty so maybe some pretty card or something like that? Does anyone have a better imagination than me?

Photo of the two of you?
Inspirational meme?

goingdownfighting · 25/03/2024 12:28

Lottery ticket?

LilFoxes · 25/03/2024 12:29

Scratch cards, or a penny?

Seeline · 25/03/2024 12:29

My Mum always just put a shiny penny in things like that. It's supposed to be unlucky to give a purse/wallet that's empty, so the penny met that criteria - it wasn't part of the present.

Salemforcuddles · 25/03/2024 12:30

Why don't you put it in a pretty box that she can use to store some of her craft materials in

SevenSeasOfRhye · 25/03/2024 12:30

Book of stamps?

Noodge · 25/03/2024 12:37

Thanks all of you, that was quick! I am digging through photos now. I love those mini art cards too!
That was our tradition when I was young, just a shiny new penny. I wonder why It's considered bad luck?

As a crafter myself, a giftcard for somewhere like Hobbycraft or my favourite online wool shop would be hugely appreciated and useful! That and a photo of the two of you would be lovely I think.

I think it's too ensure that the wallet will never be empty - the owner will never run out of money.

Ilovebees · 25/03/2024 12:48

Giftcard for sure ! Maybe Starbucks for coffe and resutaurant 🥳

CorylusAgain · 25/03/2024 12:52

The tradition is to bring luck not as a monetary gift for the recipient to spend. So, I would probably go with tradition. Maybe an old coin? You can get very old coins cheaply on ebay.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 25/03/2024 12:53

Not exactly this (I love gothic stuff) but you can get all sorts of special coins

I have bought a friend an angel coin.

If superstitious, you put coin in to keep. I've only ever received them with sellotape wrapped round so you don't spend it. Don't know if that's weird 😂

Halo2024 · 25/03/2024 12:58

Does your friend read for pleasure? I love bookmarks, I’ve got some really gorgeous ones over the years, like a sliver plated leaf.

Trophyfoot · 25/03/2024 12:59

You can't give a wallet or purse without money in it, it's unlucky! So, you at least need to put in a small coin. Maybe you could find a coin for the year of her birth or some other significant date?

Lacoutine · 25/03/2024 13:00

A pack of seeds 🤷🏻‍♀️😁

Lurkingandlearning · 25/03/2024 13:02

Is there something meaningful and small you could stick to a piece of card and cover with sticky backed plastic/laminate. I knew someone who had a 4 leaf clover. I know you can’t find them to order but maybe a small flower or any small thing that would work

Noodge · 25/03/2024 13:05

Thanks again all, I love those coins! Seeds is a good idea too.
Yes I'll have to find a coin won't I, not sure I am superstitious but better to be safe than sorry!

Or an old coin - maybe really old? I would love to own something like this:

Careful though as lots of the “old” coins on eBay are modern replicas.
I’m getting invested in this 😁

fluffycloudalert · 25/03/2024 14:33

Just shove in a 5p. That's what I do - even if I'm donating an old purse to the charity shop!

CheshireCat1 · 25/03/2024 14:57

A lucky sixpence with her year of birth.

TheFormidableMrsC · 25/03/2024 15:00

I'd do a lottery ticket or scratch card and a 50p for the "luck" element.

minipie · 25/03/2024 15:00

Chocolate coins!

Noodge · 25/03/2024 15:56

@fluffycloudalert that is so funny! I wonder if chocolate coins would live up to the superstition though? If I bought a lottery ticket and she won I'd be incensed really happy for her! Grin
