Tablecloths - very exciting subject

I need a protective tablecloth for our new (to us) solid oak table. I have had oil cloth before but it’s been very light and slid everywhere, even with those none slip mats underneath.

Can anyone recommend a company who will provide something weightier for the table, with the bound edges. I’m after something that will be on the majority of the time so happy to pay for something that will really do the job, maybe with a backing built in?

you could have just got an mdf chip as chips table if you’re going to have it covered in a tablecloth the whole time!

CanaryCanary · 25/03/2024 11:25

Etsy is a good place for that kind of thing

It's a good point though really, isn't it. When do you plan on having the table 'out'.

Btw joleetablecloths co.uk might have what you're looking for.

zzpleb · 25/03/2024 11:42

How about a heavy duty table protector with a textured surface, face down on the table so the textured surface stops it sliding around. Then put a pretty one on top.

We sort of have that, although unintentionally: it's actually a large piece folded over because we didn't want to cut it. So the textured surface is on top and bottom.

If it’s a rectangular table there is a company I found which will make the oil cloth to fit so it has box sides and doesn’t slip. Total game changer. Hang on I will find the name

Interested in this too as have a similar problem to op!

PeppermintParty · 25/03/2024 11:48

I was going to suggest a table protector too, but I see @zzpleb beat me to it.

My parents always used one with a thin tablecloth on top. I did too for a while with a previous table.

A quick google suggests this one (although I cannot vouch for the brand). https://tablecloths.co.uk/shop/table-protector-shield/

Wipeeasytablecloths is the company and here is the link showing the box corners which are an optional extra. It’s brilliant, I wish I’d found it earlier after years of oilcloths that slid around and curled up at the edges.

I hate table protectors. We just have heat proof place settings / table mats. I want to see my table!

Aquamarine1029 · 25/03/2024 11:51

What are you protecting the table from?

it was a valid question
but one you seemed to have taken offence at!

Why on earth do people need to know why op wants to cover her table?!!! She just does!

We have a solid oak table that I keep covered most of the time to protect it from scratches when things get dumped on it or when it's used for work/crafting etc.

Maybe op is the same? Why does it matter? Confused

DUNELM

I always bought mine in Dunelm - lots of choice and you could buy it off a roll so no hard to remove creases. Went in a couple of weeks ago and they've stopped doing it in store and online! ☹️

it was the op that mentioned the solid oak table

which is generally a lovely looking table . Plus expensive.

So… not totally weird to ask why buy if going to cover.

A bit like buying a jag. but wanting to keep it locked away in the garage and only use the focus instead.

stayathomer · 25/03/2024 12:06

Go into your local hardware department store, ours is great for that sort of thing and they’re affordable but heavy duty.

I think she's probably still planning to use the table ....

ok bit like buying the jag
but then only driving it in the dead of night! 😆

marlfield · 25/03/2024 12:29

Maybe she has small children who like to draw on every surface in biro? Maybe she'll take the table cloth off for special occasions only? Maybe she's planning on renting her house out on AirBnB?

There are loads of reasons why this is a good idea!

fedupandstuck · 25/03/2024 12:38

Jolee Tablecloths will make a standard size or made to measure oilcloth with boxed corners (assuming a rectangular or square table). I have found that with the boxed corners the oilcloth doesn't move around at all.

OwlBasket · 25/03/2024 12:43

@ArrestHer We had something like this when the DC were small. Lovely and heavy so didn’t move at all, I think ours was 4mm thick but not sure anymore. Doesn’t spoil the lines of the table or hide the wood. Game changer.

Had a boxed edged oilcloth for massively messy things like finger painting and used normal cotton tablecloths for dinner.
