50+ sports car = middlife crisis?

And does it matter?

I mentioned to a couple of friends yesterday vthat I've been dithering over buying a little convertible. Nothing expensive and I'll probably keep my sensible car for times when you need a sensible car.

They both found it most amusing and were laughing at my midlife crisis.

Is that what everyone's going to think and doss it matter if they do?

FWIW, DH died, my DC became adults and I turned 50, all in the same year. So if anyone's entitled to a midlife crisis, I am 😆

Go for it!
I am 51 and saving for a little camper van which I can bugger off in when everyone pisses me off (which is often since I’ve hit peri)

Darklane · 25/03/2024 10:15

If it’s what you want go for it.
We had one once but the unseen disadvantages meant we sold it. Obviously the rain, especially if you set off on the motorway, lovely summer’s day & it suddenly starts to pour down. Wet bums are not pleasant. But far worse I found where the hot sunny days. Nobody warns you that you can get badly sunburnt driving an open top car on a hot day. You can also get the soft top ripped by vandals or thieves.

My mid life crisis car would be a motor home, if I could afford one. Go for it!

Now the campervan I can recommend. I have a motorhome, just chuck in the dogs & some necessities & off we go to anywhere, just follow my nose as the mood takes me. I’m off to Scotland once the Easter rush has past,no plans as to where this time or how long, I’m retired 😁

Oh , I'm well aware there's nothing sensible about it, that's part of the appeal. I'm looking at a retractable hardtop and will keep my sensible family car.

@Darklane i believe that dropping lighted cigarette butts into open topped cars used to be a thing too.

I have a friend who's building one as his midlife crisis. Having great fun sourcing everything on a shoestring as part of the challenge.

Less of a midlife crisis and more of a next stage where children can stand on their own feet. It sounds like you’ve had the kind of year that would benefit from a little convertible to me. Just do it.

Bluevelvetsofa · 25/03/2024 10:28

Well, I had a Mazda MX5, followed by an Audi TT, followed by another Audi TT, followed by a Mini Cooper S convertible. The only reason I gave up the two seaters was grandchildren. Loved the Mazda and the Audis. There will be men who regard it as their mission to take you down and prove they can go faster than you. Let them get on with it.

The Mini was uncomfortable, so I got more sedate again.

Hereyoume · 25/03/2024 10:28

Buy the car OP.

If you are referring to an MX 5, you had better have your health insurance up to date, because you'll have to be surgically removed from the driving seat 😁

Edited

We have a touring caravan which we love but I really like the idea of a camper van/motor home now the kids are older and no longer coming with us, as I like the idea of going out for a day trip and if I want to stay overnight I already have my bed!
Dh wants to stick with the caravan hence it now being just my dream.

🤣🤣 Nobody warns you that you can get sunburnt because common sense would tell you exposure to the sun = sunburn.

When it rains you pull over and put the roof up.

Yes vandals are in an issue for a soft top but many convertibles these days have electronic hard tops. Plus it's an additional car.

Midlife is exactly the time to have one of these types of cars as you can afford it.

Go for it OP and enjoy it.

Darklane · 25/03/2024 10:44

Not so easy to pull over on a busy motorway.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/03/2024 10:47

DH did it. I call it the wankmobile. It was, and is great but we don't keep it in the UK any more. Ulez, 20mph limits, etc.

Igmum · 25/03/2024 11:10

Go for it. You've definitely earned yourself a mid life crisis. Enjoy

Malarandras · 25/03/2024 11:11

Some people might think that but what difference does it make if you are happy?

colouredball · 25/03/2024 11:13

I always think a 'mid life crisis' is actually a turning point; or a realisation that life is precious and when you have more time and money as your kids have grown, you can and should do what you want. No crisis, just living.

AffIt · 25/03/2024 12:01

100% buy the sports car and to hell with everybody else!

(Although, as a former sports car owner, go for a hard top unless you have a garage or car port: soft tops are cool, but needy.)

Livinghappy · 25/03/2024 12:07

@Trophyfoot buy the car...but tell us what it is afterwards 😊

I don't get why it's mid life crisis since it's the most sensible age to have a 2 seater...no kids to ferry around, you can afford it, car insurance cheaper than when in your 20s.

It’s only a sad midlife crisis if a man does it. If a woman does she’s “living her best life” so I presume you’ll be ok on here…

Geebray · 25/03/2024 12:08

You're a long time dead - enjoy yourself now! Indulge yourself!! 🚗

DoraSpenlow · 25/03/2024 12:11

It you think it will bring you some joy, go for it. Ignore everyone else. I bought my first MX5 (with automatic roof) when I was 60. I am now on my second and I love it. Couldn't care less what anyone thinks. Although I was 60 it was the first car I was able to buy with my own money. Always shared a car with DH before that. Could only afford it because my Dad died and left me some money though.

Aaron95 · 25/03/2024 12:14

I've got one. Don't think I had a midlife crisis. More that the kids have left home and we have more spare money then we did before so can afford it.

thenightsky · 25/03/2024 12:15

Do it. I bought my Smart Roadster when I was 52 and I've still got it 12 years later. I do keep it garaged though and it rarely gets driven in winter.

HauntedBungalow · 25/03/2024 12:16

The only people I know with sports cars are both older women. As a pp said it absolutely makes sense to get one now when you no longer need a sensible practical vehicle and can afford the insurance and upkeep. I intend to do the same myself when I can.
