I know, I know.

Just a steer please so I can ask my medics with proper degrees…

53, on mirena and evoral patches of 75mg

Had private MOT via work in January and they identified slightly raised systolic BP but very very high HDL. (That’s the good one) Total cholesterol and ratio was fine. Normal CA125, everything else with the exception of calcium (slightly low) was normal. Normal iron study, normal creatinine etc.

About a stone overweight, otherwise fit and healthy.

And my blood pressure is suddenly ginormous. Highest has been 168/122 and I’m averaging around 145/100. Got a constant dull ache on left side below ribs, on a scale of 1-10 it’s about a 4. I have no notion where this has come from. I’m exhausted, I can hear whooshing in my ears, throbbing under my chin and I feel like I might be sick although I’ve only vomited once. Constant headache, like a tiredness one but it never goes.

WtF? Ideas welcome.

Ok so it’s related solely to weight and a glass of red?

No it isn't JUST related to weight and alcohol. They don't help

You need your liver results too imo

Haematologist said he won’t infuse unless it’s below 9 and I’m symptomatic. I said “I’m symptomatic now” and he said well that’s not cos of your ferritin.

I'm no doctor but I am used to being fobbed off by them and that ⬆️ sounds like pure bullshit.
Doctoring-by-numbers.
Instead of holistic treatment of the patient sitting in front of them.

VillageOnSmile · 24/03/2024 19:46

@Wiseoldminerva Posters seem to be fixated on your BP but I’m getting the feeling it’s the pain that is worrying you the most.
lDid you mention it to the GP and what did they say?

Im not aware of high BP causing pain the abdomen. Headaches yes. Tinnitus yes but not abdominal pain.
On location alone I’d think more of the gallbladder. (But gallbladder stones are usually much more painful)

id mention that again to the GP when you see them. And ask them what they think.

VillageOnSmile · 24/03/2024 19:46

Oh and YY about checking your liver too!!

BellsAndFootfalls · 24/03/2024 19:57

Haven't RTFT but pheochromocytoma? It's very, very rare though

Hmm. I’ve got loads of cafe au lait spots which have never troubled me and it’s likely I have mild NF1 which is indicated in pheochromocytoma.

ahhh the rabbit holes one finds on a Sunday night.

What follow up have you got? Again, apologies, I haven't read all the details but if your BP is poorly controlled then make a GP appointment asap and ask for a 24hr urine collection to exclude pheochromocytoma

DillDanding · 25/03/2024 10:27

I have no advise but am googling pheochromocytoma!

I also have a niggly ache under left ribs, it is very sporadic and no apparent cause.

chatelai · 25/03/2024 10:36

I had the deep pain thing, and it was shingles. That can cause all kinds of weirdness.

Just a thought.

I am deliberately bumping a ZOMBIE THREAD because I like updates.

Did you ever make any progress towards getting better, @Wiseoldminerva ?

I was wondering too

Wiseoldminerva · 05/11/2025 22:18

Well hello there!

Went for another work up with the haematologist and again all is normal as far as he is concerned. I said it was the nagging pain that was bothering me, because I didn’t know what was causing it. But that seems to have disappeared, just as suddenly as it arrived. What HAS happened though is some weirdness around allergy and food intolerance, which has all kicked off since menopause and HRT.

I was always a bit off around mustard and legumes but so long as I didn’t overdo it, I was ok. But no longer! The slightest smear of mustard and I’m doubled up in pain on the toilet, within half an hour. Then basically it all falls out or I throw it up, more rarely. And then I’m absolutely shattered. Same now with all legumes, tree nuts, soya, bean sprouts etc. So by default my diet has changed and since avoiding these groups like the plague, I’m a lot better. It may well be that the nagging pain was pulled muscle from straining!

Oh and sulphites. Can’t have those. So that means only organic wine with low sulphite and even then, I get hangovers that would stun a pig. So I’m reduced to distilled spirits with reduced sulphites. And this pisses me right off. Same with cider.

But my weight is down, my blood pressure is normal (doc changed me to Candesartan and the headaches disappeared) and so I’m crossing my fingers that I’m on the mend, albeit with a dull life and simple quite restricted food.

Occassionally I think “well feck this” and have red wine and a Chinese takeaway and without fail I’m calling for the priest very quickly.

Thankyou for thinking of me x

Long Covid? That can cause tinnitus, chest pain, breathlessness.

My DH had a lot of chest pain for a few weeks which the GP sent him to A&E for after the BP readings kept coming back high too.

Turned out it is most likely to be Long Covid, as all his bloods and other vital stats came back fine.

If not LC, I agree with others saying to get your thyroid checked too.
