How much for glasses? £500?

I don’t wear glasses, so no idea how much they cost, but DH came home last week and said that he’d spent over £500 on a new pair. It seems extortionate to me, or is it normal?

I've learnt to stand stock still, avoid touching anything, and call plaintively for help Grin

I know there's a strong environmental component to myopia, particularly low sunlight exposure, but I think the more severe myopia has to have a genetic component. With parents at -7 and -13, I was doomed to it IMO 🤣

Yes, DC have inherited my eyesight not their father's, unfortunately! Have had glasses since they were 12.

DH and I (no lens less than -6 between us) have an unwritten agreement that, no matter how grumpy/tired etc we are, at any time of day of night, we will always help the other with a "glasses down" incident whilst the blinded person stands very still.

If I didn't have my lenses thinned my glasses would weigh to much to wear comfortably.

Yes mine too. The weight would make them slip ! And you can't have big ones either. I once went to specsavers for the free pair and it wad garfly worth the second pair because the cost ofcthe lenses was so high!

Now that is a relationship to aspire to. On a serious note though, both in the couple needing a high prescription must be expensive :(

My last pair were £650 - not designer frames but not the cheap ones, prob mid range price wise. But my prescription is complex, 3 different prescriptions in each lense and that's what makes them v expensive. I usually only have to replace every couple of years, and I wear them all the time so actually works out about 90 pence per day if you think about it. But yes prescription glasses can be very pricey.

Glasses can be complicated. I'm about to get my eyes sorted again and it will cost £600 including full test [and checking the eye health as part of the test etc.] I have eczema so go for titanium frames which are light small and hypoallergenic. I have to wear my glasses all the time for distance and now also close up, including varifocals, so I'm not going to compromise. I also go for decent varifocals allowing maximum field of vision and thin lenses as I have very thick otherwise. I try to think of it in terms of something like 45p a day to be comfortable, without heavy frames that make me itch, see properly etc. It's worth it.

AyeupDuck · 10/09/2024 14:27

If he just needed single lens for tv and reading then that is far too much. I need glasses like this and in spec savers the cheapest pair was £15. I’m going for a pair that costs £50. I reckon he has had designer frames. Obviously a complex prescription is very different

IDontHateRainbows · 10/09/2024 15:26

Normal for a complicated prescription/ varifocals.

I'm thinking of going back to single vision as I can't seem to get on with vfs which will hopefully bring the price down!
