Working on Good Friday - rather unusual!

I work as a private English tutor and every year, see an increase in students wanting extra tuition at this time of year (the Mock results are in and a number of students have realised that they need more work if they're going to get the grades they need - panic has set in!).

Covid, of course, contributed to this, as did the teachers' strikes - but this is the first year that I've found myself booked to teach on Good Friday (and not just one student). What on earth is going on?

Doesn't seem unusual to me. I work good Friday in the NHS...if my son was tutoring age I would think it a handy day before the bank holiday weekend

PuttingDownRoots · 23/03/2024 04:34

My DC don't finish school until Thursday afternoon. If they were older, the rifay would be a very logical day for tutoring. Especially if having a few days holiday later in the 2 week break.

Ponderingwindow · 23/03/2024 04:46

I’ve never had the day off. Plenty of people don’t.

It's not a UK wide BH .

I work in the NHS. I am working Good Friday and Easter Monday.

TheSnowQueen · 23/03/2024 05:08

It is a UK wide bank holiday and some Christians consider it the most holy day of the year. Indicative of the collapse in importance of the Christian faith in the UK that it's normal for those that normally take a BH off to work.

Surely working in the NHS is quite different to being a tutor 🤔The country where I live is quite strict about people not working on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want a tutor to work, and it would be tough luck if they wanted me to.

endofthelinefinally · 23/03/2024 06:01

Good Friday has never been a bank holiday. Easter Monday is a bank holiday.

They are both bank holidays

Sunflowergirl1 · 23/03/2024 06:08

I have a regular rotational beauticians appointment on a Friday and it falls on Good Friday. I went to change it and she said no worry, she is working as normal that day.

rwalker · 23/03/2024 06:12

3 out of 4 in out house are working it

being honest I think there’s only a small percentage that see it as a religious day the majority see it as a free day off

No their not I'm certainly seeing a dr at hospital on G Friday and Easter Monday has never been a thing where I live . G. Friday is a holiday where I live in name only . It has never been a holiday that is a holiday .

KERALA1 · 23/03/2024 06:15

Weird you have to ask - now is peak “oh shit” time pre gcse and a levels and most people aren’t devout Christians

SnapdragonToadflax · 23/03/2024 06:19

Surely it's up to you whether you accept bookings that day? I can't imagine teenagers are that bothered, it's just a handy day off school they can use for tutoring.

I don't really understand why you're shocked. Don't work it if you don't want to. It's not like there's any cultural expectation of doing something else (like Christmas dinner) - it's just a bank holiday.

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 23/03/2024 06:19

It’s just another day.
Good opportunity to make cash.
NHS it’s just a Friday.
Love it as an extra day off as no religious connotation to our house whatsoever, happy to work it though.

I believe that religious beliefs are dying generation by generation.
It is taught in schools as a subject to teach about respecting other people’s beliefs but no longer are kids force fed the whole thing as real and must be abided by.
Therefore the dictated aspect of religious holidays hold little meaning, it’s just another day.

Did you not read , in name only .

LlynTegid · 23/03/2024 06:36

Good Friday always seems to have been the one with more people working than any other. Though teaching does seem unusual.

You're being weird. In England and Wales, it's a Bank Holiday. Not in name only, whatever you mean by that. An actual bank Holiday like all the others listed on that link.

donteatthedaisies0 · 23/03/2024 06:39

I don't live in England or Wales 🙄.

Where in the Uk is it not a BH?

CirreltheSquirrel · 23/03/2024 06:40

It's a funny one. I've always worked in places where it is a bank holiday, no question, but my OH's employer lets people choose between good Friday and Easter Tuesday so they still get the same number of bank holidays but it isn't assumed that they will want good Friday off. I seem to remember that there were historically regional variations where some places had it as a holiday and some didn't.

So why are you arguing with OP who clearly does? Grow up.

Yeah, this tbh op. I also worked many Good Fridays.

You do realise shops are open right?

Kids are not at school either which is prime opportunity for you to get cash.

And most people in this country aren’t actually Christian, and they love xmas more than easter

sorrynotathome · 23/03/2024 06:46

Shops may be open but I think you'll find the banks are closed (apart from that place where @donteatthedaisies0 lives).
