Working on Good Friday - rather unusual!

I work as a private English tutor and every year, see an increase in students wanting extra tuition at this time of year (the Mock results are in and a number of students have realised that they need more work if they're going to get the grades they need - panic has set in!).

Covid, of course, contributed to this, as did the teachers' strikes - but this is the first year that I've found myself booked to teach on Good Friday (and not just one student). What on earth is going on?

Good Friday is a bank holiday in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Easter Monday is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The current Yr11’s lost a term and a half of Yr7, a term of Yr8 in their ‘bubbles’ plus other lost weeks if they came into contact with COVID. I think it’s taken it’s toll on their schooling, I feel like they’re a ‘lost’ year group. It will be interesting to see this cohorts National grades in August.

Good Friday has never been a bank holiday. Easter Monday is a bank holiday.

@endofthelinefinally not true for everywhere.

Good Friday has been a holiday in Scotland for many years before they made Easter Monday a holiday too.

Hi OP, also an English tutor and also getting the usual Easter time panic bookings. But I’m not working on Good Friday … because I don’t want to! I have accepted some bookings for Easter Monday (I tutor online so it’s straight forward enough!) but that’s as far as I’ll go!

As you build up your confidence, you’ll feel able to politely turn down some bookings/offer alternatives. It does feel nerve-wracking at first, but if you’re a tutor then you’re in charge of your own timetable now!

I've actually been doing this for some years now - hence the surprise as I've never been asked to tutor on Good Friday before. I try not to turn down any of my students as I know how hard they've been working and how anxious some of them are.

Why didn't you just close your calendar if you didn't want to work on Good Friday @DisabledDemon ?

I didn't say that I didn't want to. I said that I was surprised as it hadn't happened before. I certainly haven't got any objection to working on Good Friday; I'm self-employed - I go where the work is.

I beg to differ.I was at my local Catholic church celebrating the Good Friday mass and it was packed so too were all the surrounding Christian Churches.Good Friday is a very important day to Christians in this Christian country and so it should be.Some local stores close early due to the mass starting at 3pm.Good Friday mass celebrates the passion of our lord .Easter is the most important time in the Christian religious calander.I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Easter ✝️✝️

It is tradition not to celebrate mass on Good Friday, as it is a day of morning and sadness. The last mass is held the day before on Holy Thursday and then not again until Easter Sunday. On Good Friday there are services and liturgies but no mass.
Sorry it's a bit off topic, but if you are posting something and "beg to differ", you should get your facts straight.

*mourning not morning. Oops!

HidingFromDD · 30/03/2024 06:16

I suspect it’s because a lot of schools only finished Thursday, so it’s getting tutoring before the holiday has really ‘begun’

Instantcustard · 30/03/2024 06:46

@waitingforthedrain Agreed. I live in a very Catholic country and Good Friday is not a bank holiday because it's not a day of celebration!
