Things that everyone raves about that are actually shite PART 2

Romcoms. Love Actually is the worst one, but it isn't the only one. I also loathe Notting Hill, Four Weddings, and most of the other ones as well. Pretty Woman is dire. I far prefer Old Hollywood screwball comedies. Some Like it Hot has to be the most perfect comedy ever, it is so funny and it is romantic without being schmaltzy.

London
Dry robes (as a “fashion statement”)
The North Face (good but overrun by all the teens)
Greggs (DH is obsessed)
Miller & Carter
Stanley cups
Prime (when that was all the rage)
INFLUENCERS / Tik Tok / SM in general
Grey everything
Panelled everything

Not been to centre parcs in years but the prices are shocking when I had a look lately for a little break

Gutted about North Face. My black puffa is the most comfortable and practical jacket I’ve ever had but I’m a teacher and 90% of the teens at my school wear them so I’ve had to retire it. Hopefully temporarily until they move on to something else.

Weirdly just took Ds17 to see Despicable Me 4 and then Nando's tonight and had a brilliant time. The cinema was full and it was lovely to hear people really laughing. Nando's was Nando's but we had a great chat and the service was ace.

I did however turn down flat an open air screening of Mumma Mia, which in my humble opinion the worst film ever in the history of cinema. Furthermore the prospect of middle age women three sheets on warm Prosecco, wearing dungarees and feather boas and giving their best Donna was just like looking into the jaws or death by a thousand screeches.

MM is one of the worst films I’ve seen. Godawful.
Death by a thousand screeches 😆

Turtle Doves Wrist Warmers
That Uniqlo bag
See also Longchamp La Pliage bag

The weird expensive candle obsession - "OP I'd get her a White Stuff/Jo Malone/Diptyque candle, you can't go wrong."

I ended up with 12, yes 12 of the fuckers for my 40th and 7 for Christmas. That's just shy of £1000 worth of candles. CANDLES ffs!!! The vast majority of which make me wheeze, my eyes water and I start coughing as I am quite allergic to grasses and certain flowers.

I know...what an ungrateful wretch I am.

I love ALL those things!

Food at Dishoom (and I'm Indian).

It's definitely overrated. It's tasty, but people had been singing it's praises and built it up so much that it was a total let down. I was expecting to be blown away, but honestly I've had nicer meals from the better Indian and Nepalese restaurants in my area.

En suite bathrooms.

I fail to see the upside in being able to hear your partner having a shit.

I love my en-suite.
I think people hate them because they have a disrespectful partner problem.

Tapas as a group meal!

Thatsnotmynose · 30/07/2024 06:24

Any kind of 'pampering' and the concept of 'self care' really meaning to make yourself more presentable to men.

wildfellhall · 30/07/2024 06:31

Tattoos - gorgeous young people covering themselves in images that will age badly in every way. Don't get it but it's clearly a fashion/generational thing. Some look nice of course - but the choices so often seem made in weird short term haste.

Martin Scorsese films since Gangs of New York - they're way too long mate, get your editor to tell you the truth.

Women on social media holding glasses of wine up to the camera smugly "look how many friends I have in nice settings drinking wine with me"

Laughing so much at this thread "doughnuts", "sex", "nandos".

MangosteenSoda · 30/07/2024 06:34

Musicals, massages, markets, marmalade, marzipan.

I clearly have huge beef with the letter M.

wildfellhall · 30/07/2024 06:41

Meryl Streep in MM and in Into The Woods - unwatchable

beguilingeyes · 30/07/2024 06:42

Abba. Eurotrash shite. Dancing Queen, a song about dancing that you can't dance to because it's so bloody slow.
Cupcakes. A ton of over sweet icing and a scrap of dry sponge.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 30/07/2024 06:52

Going abroad on a self-catering holiday - so much bloody faff and you still have to go to the bloody supermarket and load and unload a bloody dishwasher and think about what to feed people. The 'Oh, we don't cook, we just eat the most marvellous bread and cheese, tra-la-la' brigade get right on my nerves.

I do like lots of things listed on this thread, however, so might be completely out of step with the zeitgeist.

soupfiend · 29/07/2024 22:28

Oh god so many of these

Les Mis I think someone mentioned
Kale
Rocket, urgh
Linen cropped trousers - for looking like Im doing the gardening
Bread
Also agree about rom coms or 'coming of age' films, particularly anything amercian, just makes me cringe.

Am I allowed to pick a person? If so, Amy Whinehouse

Winehouse has passed away hasnt she?

VeryStressedMum · 30/07/2024 06:54

The Barbie movie. I understand the message of the film but the film itself was a bit weird and I didn't think it was that good.

I do love Center Parcs though

soupfiend · 30/07/2024 06:57

bumsnetto · 30/07/2024 06:53

Winehouse has passed away hasnt she?

Yes a long time ago but we're all still expected to mither on about how amazing and talented she was. Tons of documentaries about her. Overrated.

DamnYerEyes · 30/07/2024 07:19

Camping
Sushi
TwitteX

ShiftySquirrel · 30/07/2024 07:19

Yes definitely ABBA, but I don't mention it anymore irl because I am looked at as if I have two heads.

Perhaps it's an embarrassing lapse of taste on my part, but I make excuses for any Abba based fun with my friends.

Guavafish1 · 30/07/2024 07:22

Grey interior walls

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/07/2024 07:26

FayeGreener · 29/07/2024 21:57

YES!

Also I’ve never understood all the fuss about Les Mis. It only seeks to have one tune in it and that’s the dirge-like I dreamed a dream.

To me the only memorable tune in Les Mis was ‘Master of the House’ - Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen, which IMO was brilliant. I was decidedly underwhelmed with the rest of it.

EasternStandard · 30/07/2024 07:29

One Day series. I didn’t get past ten minutes but that was enough

Neurodiversitydoctor · 30/07/2024 07:32

Cornwall particularly in the school summer holidays.

HuongVuong3 · 30/07/2024 07:33

Red wine. Just disgusting.
