“Cant be arsed” or “can’t be asked”

I didn’t realise until recently that people use one term or the other. If you say one of these terms, which one is it?

I say one, friend says another, we are both convinced our way is said more than the other.

Are you sure they're not saying 'assed' rather than 'asked'

That's what I wondered.

imnotthatkindofmum · 21/03/2024 13:12

I say arsed. As a teacher I hear kids saying it and tell the off but they genuinely think the expression is asked and can't understand why I think it's bad!

KalaMush · 21/03/2024 13:14

It's arsed. Not asked.

ButterflyKu · 21/03/2024 13:18

TheChippendenSpook · 21/03/2024 12:44

Yeah I thought that too. Some people probably did say assed, then the perpetually thick changed it to asked.

Perpetually thick? Please stfu with your unnecessary comment. Judging by OP’s thread, I’m not the only one in the world who assumed it was ‘can’t be asked’

TempleOfBloom · 21/03/2024 13:20

It’s arsed.

And while we’re at it it’s off your own bat (not back) tenterhooks (not tender) and doing your utmost (not upmost)

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 21/03/2024 13:21

Arsed.

idontlikealdi · 21/03/2024 13:21

I have never ever heard 'can't be asked'. Makes no sense.

ButterflyKu · 21/03/2024 13:22

BingoMarieHeeler · 21/03/2024 12:52

I’ve heard ‘asked’ a lot actually - SE London like @ButterflyKu Or more like, ‘aks-d’ 😄 I assumed because they thought the whole ‘I can be asked but I’ll refuse’ thing too. Just like the whole American reasoning for ‘I could care less’ does make sense if you open your mind a bit - ‘I COULD care less. But I can’t be asked to’.

I’ve always said arse though personally.

Edited

Thank you! Whenever I’ve heard it, it’s always pronounced as ‘aks-d’ which in my brain = asked. None of my friends ever type it out plus it isn’t a phrase we use THAT often.

Obviously I know now the correct phrase but all I did was answer the OP’s question. No need for a poster to start getting all rude about it

DadDadDad · 21/03/2024 13:29

If you think it's "asked" you've got another think coming! 😉

2ApplesShortOfABasket · 21/03/2024 14:13

I am firmly in the “arsed” camp. Literally never heard of it being asked. My friend nearly convinced me that I had heard it wrong all my life. Off to report back and gloat.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 21/03/2024 14:28

its a bit like people say the "could care less"!!!! what the hell does that even mean? it should be "couldn't care less"!!!!

hagchic · 21/03/2024 14:34

Can't be arsed - meaning I can't be bothered.

Figment1982 · 21/03/2024 14:38

It's definitely Arsed. My friend says 'Asked'.. I think she misheard the expression initially as she's from the US, but it's too late for me to correct her now!

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 21/03/2024 14:43

I'm Camp Arsed too Grin

It's always been 'arsed' - right from the gecko, but it's a doggy dog world out there, so there may be those who disagree!

We have a dear friend who is very sweet and innocent and she massively shocked us when we first heard her say (what we heard as) 'can't be arsed'; but she had actually been saying 'asked', which she had heard from her (less sweet and innocent) brother and it hadn't occurred to her for a moment that she may have misheard him! The look on her face when she realised!

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 21/03/2024 14:47

There's a wonderful bakery near us that do, on the contrary, put a lot of care and effort into making their delicious baked goods and hot food, but they have a sticker on their window that says CBA in big letters, signifying their membership of the Craft Bakers Association.

I imagine that other people probably chuckle every time they go there and see the sticker; of course, I wouldn't ever do that...

Februaryfeels · 21/03/2024 14:47

And now where is "aks-ed" coming from

Who would say that?

easylikeasundaymorn · 21/03/2024 14:49

DadDadDad · 21/03/2024 13:29

If you think it's "asked" you've got another think coming! 😉

Except have another think coming is right, and asked is wrong?

mydogisthebest · 21/03/2024 14:50

Of course it's arsed. Asked makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and I can't believe anyone would say that

hotpotlover · 21/03/2024 14:50

I thought it was "can't be asked" for a long time, but I'm an immigrant and misheard.

Until one day it dawned on me that it is actually "can't be arsed" 😂

DadDadDad · 21/03/2024 14:52

easylikeasundaymorn · 21/03/2024 14:49

Except have another think coming is right, and asked is wrong?

I didn't say that "think" is wrong - it was just this thread reminded me of that debate, so I thought I'd chuck it in! (Many people think it should be "thing" if that's what you're wondering).

mirror245 · 21/03/2024 14:52

Definitely arsed but I have replaying how it might sound in some of my English friends accents so maybe your friend misheard and then just ran with it.

SnakesAndArrows · 21/03/2024 14:58

right from the gecko

This is tremendous.

Possibly my favourite thing from the internet all month, and I’ve watched a lot of cats demonstrating their liquidity.

I love geckos and would absolutely trust them to get whatever it is right from the start.

Topseyt123 · 21/03/2024 14:58

Justcallmebebes · 21/03/2024 12:47

Anyone who says can't be asked is just wrong and a tad stupid. End of

Exactly this.

It is absolutely 100% "can't be arsed" and means that you can't be bothered to get off your arse to do whatever it is.

"Can't be asked" is just nonsense. Of course you can be asked to do something, but maybe you just can't be arsed to actually get up and do it!
