The swearing on Netflix is ridiculous 🙄

I shouldn't have to preface this post by saying I don’t mind swearing generally, but I will…. Swearing doesn’t normally bother me (although there's a time and a place)

Honestly the scripts on Netflix are like they’ve been written by teens in drama class after the teacher has said that they’re allowed to use swear words.

Used well, swearing can add to the program (although I’d argue that not swearing doesn’t make it worse), but on every single Netflix drama it’s as though they have to drop 'fuck' in as often as they can to the point that it begins to interrupt the flow of dialogue. It’s not big, it’s not clever, it’s boring and now takes me out of the drama.

😖

No idea what I tried to watch it on but me and few people I know said that about the wire, there was no script except swearing

I don't mind some swearing but every second word? What is the point?

skippy67 · 21/03/2024 11:17

Don't watch Kin (BBC iPlayer) then OP. You'd pass out! 😂

cardibach · 21/03/2024 11:20

Can’t say I’ve noticed it myself. Could be because I don’t find it uncomfortable or jarring when someone swears I suppose, but I don’t think so.

Same on here, its not necessary.

Octavia64 · 21/03/2024 11:22

What are you watching on it?

I tend to watch documentaries (no swearing) or foreign language stuff (plenty of swearing if Spanish, no swearing if Arabic)

DoYouSmokePaul · 21/03/2024 11:25

Swear words are just words. I’m an adult and don’t get upset by other adults swearing in a TV show or film. Or in real life.

The Wire, for example - cops dealing with horrendous drug issues, gangs, murder - and they’re supposed to be saying “Oh fiddlesticks, another five dead in a drive by shooting ”?

AiryFairy1 · 21/03/2024 11:27

No swearing in Lucifer 🤩

Walkinginthesand · 21/03/2024 11:29

Just finished watching Mary and George, not on Netflix but on Sky/NOW. Really overdid it with f* and other versions of the f word and liberal use of the C word. This is something I don't get why the C word has now become acceptable to use in tv dramas when only recently it was never heard. Overall, I found the swearing in Mary & George unnecessary and jarring, other than that it's a excellent series.

DarkAndBright · 21/03/2024 15:44

I knew there’d be people on trying to imply that I can’t cope with the swearing…

TV is not real life… I’ve never heard anyone swearing in real like they do on some of the Netflix dramas - and I know people who swear a lot (as opposed to moderately). It stops the flow of the narrative because it doesn’t quite fit somehow.

And don’t be so silly with your 'fiddlesticks' comment - drama works well when there’s no swearing. When there’s too much, it stops the line of the narrative.

As I was watching an episode of NCIS last night... I felt the LACK of swearing really makes it less real.

I swear like a marine gunnery sergeant. Can't say I notice excessive swearing on tv. there ARE shows that are super hardcore, but I don't like those shows anyway. Ironically, DH, who swears much less than I do, watches those.

MonsteraMama · 21/03/2024 15:49

Can't say I've noticed, maybe we haven't watched the same ones! Any particularly bad offenders? I'm curious now.

DarkAndBright · 21/03/2024 18:00

I watch all sorts - not one particular genre.

I want to liken it to film music/ film scores. When the music is good, it supports the narrative and you don’t even notice the music constantly playing.

When the music is bad, you notice it and it interferes with the narrative.

ETA I feel that swearing in scripts should be similar. If it works, it doesn’t stand out (no matter how much) if you start to notice it Every. Single. Time. (To the point where it could become a drinking game 🤨), then it’s too much or not right.

I kinda agree actually. In real life tend to swear quite a bit (sorry). But I've recently watched the boys spinoff on prime (can't remember the name) and even I was clutching at my pearls on occasion; am an avid the boys fan and didn't find it too much, maybe it was because it was teens effing and blinding constantly that made me notice.

Again for those hard of hearing I am not against swearing I am not against some swearing but when the script writers only job is to fit as many swear words in because they seem to get paid by how many they can fit into one scene there is no storyline

Ans police are human and may swear but I doubt in real life they would be able to swear that much on duty

Thingamebobwotsit · 21/03/2024 20:24

Yep agree @DarkAndBright am no coward when it comes to swearing but very hard to watch with the DCs when the storyline is age appropriate but the language is not.

purplemunkey · 21/03/2024 20:47

I know what you mean, but I don’t think it’s ’Netflix’ as such. There’s a vast amount of content on Netflix, not all stuff they’ve made themselves.

I enjoyed Succession, but did find the swearing a bit much. Not offended, just overdone so it was hard to hear they were actually saying half the time.

Fuck sounds so much nicer in an irish accent though.
And I’m never sure if feck still counts as swearing. Is this fuck but in a particular regional irish accent or a substituting word?
If you liked Kin try Love/Hate on itvx. Dublin drugs gang, five series and gripping.

Agree. It sounded like a script written by first-year media undergraduates trying to do ‘gritty realism’. Except f wasn’t even used as a swear word in the seventeenth century. It was all ‘God’s blood’ (s’blood) and ‘God’s wounds’ (zounds). F* was what you did to the servants.

Feck is much milder than fuck. No sexual connotations with feck. Otherwise used much the same way.

DarkAndBright · 22/03/2024 11:10

I don't really consider feck to be a swear word.

Interesting to hear other people's opinions.

Can't say that I've ever noticed. Maybe you're less relaxed about swearing than you thought you were? Or maybe you're just watching particularly sweary stuff?

Don’t think so.

Maybe it’s because I’m watching more than usual (sick leave after surgery), but I don’t think it’s that either….

I think (in addition to my comments re likening it to music), it’s also the lack of variety - fuck this and fuck that. No one talks like that in real life. I think that as a whole, people who really swear tend to have a much richer or wider vocabulary of swear words - bloody/ damn it/ what the hell/ cunt/ bugger etc etc. Also, no two people swear the same way. Also, different ages and demographics swear in different ways.

In the program I’m watching now, it’s 99% fuck and 1% cunt - regardless of age or demographic of the character. That’s not realistic, and is therefore annoying. At my workplace, someone used cunt a while back and half the table reacted negatively (one person said something, the others didn’t respond but pulled a face) the other half didn’t bat an eyelid. If they’re going for gritty realism, then they also need to consider subtle reactions of background characters (or is that too 'real'?)

Different characters should swear differently, some might not. Reactions need to be considered and they need to up the variety of milder and less mild swear words.

Then we’re talking 'realistic'. Otherwise it’s just teen drama writers who want to 'shock' 🙄.

I would still argue, though that no swearing doesn’t detract, but this overuse/ or bad application of swearing definitely does detract from the flow of the dialogue.
