Tips to stop losing my keys

How do I stop losing my keys? So far they've always turned up, but I feel like I spend so much of my time looking for them. I tried one of those Bluetooth tag things but then I kept forgetting to charge it and it ran out of battery 🤦‍♀️

Pot by the door. Put them straight in ALWAYS.

I am prone to losing keys but if I stick to this I always know they are in the pot.

otherwise you can have a beeper on them which we’ve done for my mum

Yep, something by the door you put them in the moment you close the front door.

Hook near the door. Do not leave them too close as they can be fished off by some people.

Also maybe get one of those beeper things. It can be attached to things you lose. You get a thing like a tv remote control that you can use to make them beep so you can find them. It is cheaper and faster than using airtags.

Where are you losing them? Is it always just in the house or do you mislay them when you go out too?

If it is the former, then I would say it has to be a habit. A traditional style key hook near the door or a shelf / pot etc. Also really big keyrings so it is very difficult to lose them, or rather than a Bluetooth keyring one of those old style whistle one.

It sounds simple, but just decide on a place to keep them and always keep them there. For example - the side pocket of your handbag. Or a hook by the door. Make a constant effort to always put them in the same place, make it a habit. Then you won't lose them. This is what I do.

Get a Tile
The replaceable batteries last about 2 years - I think the non replaceable ones last longer.

Get a Tile, brilliant, doesn’t need charging. You ring your keys from your phone, or your phone from your keys. Saved me quite a few times.

Yes I feel you, ADHD and constantly losing my keys. You have to get into the routine of putting them somewhere as soon as you come in the door, repeatedly (I set an alarm in my phone to go off when I get back home) until the point you’ll feel weird if you haven’t done it.

So if I come in now and haven’t put my keys in the pot, I feel like I’ve forgotten something until I do it 😂 it does work eventually!

Tile or an Apple tag depending on what phone you have. The replaceable batteries last around two years.

Pot by the front door, come in, lock door from the inside (safety always first) put the keys in a pot/on a hook and then turn off your house alarm. That way you will always know exactly where your keys are especially if there is an emergency and you need to leave the house urgently.

Dh is a leaver, ie where are your keys? Where I left them ie anywhere he has been. I am a putter, everything has a place. Jon Richardson does a whole sketch about this. Dh has learned to put the keys into a pot by the door so it can be a learned behaviour.

You need to build a habit, once you've repeated it a few times it becomes automatic.

My keys live in a bowl on my desk when I'm home, and attach to a caribiner clip on the inside of my handbag when I'm outside.

I bought a tag you attach to.mine then if you lose them you whistle and they beep so you can find them.

Apple AirTag or whatever is compatible with your phone
Bowl to put them in wherever you take your coat/ shoes off( or hook)

You need a place for them. Our keys go on a hook in a cupboard. It took a while to get used to it and I used to have to give myself a little pep talk as I was opening the door, shoes in the drawer, coat and key in the cupboard now it's just what I do without thinking. (Most of the time 😬)

Get a bowl or box and train yourself to always put them in there as soon as you get into the house. From your hand into the container. Every time.

A tile looks like a better solution than my beeper thingy, which although cheaper (6 tags for about 20 quid) gets through the batteries quite quickly.

I also like the reverse find feature because putting a tag on a phone is hard because there is no way to attach it, so with one tile you effectively get two tags for both your phone and keys.

Have two sets. One that you keep in your main handbag on a key chain. One in a pot by the door that you use when you are not using your main handbag/backpack, so you don't have to transfer them from your work bag to your gym bag or dogwalking coat. As soon as you let yourself in they go back in the pot if they are pot keys. They never leave the bag if they are bag keys because they are on a lanyard attached to the inside of the bag.

I speak as an ADHD key-losing, own-housebreaking expert.

That said, I have just seen tile does not allow you to replace the battery, which is silly. So I won't be getting one of those.

Put them on a colourful landyard. It makes them bigger visual but not bulk wise. When your having a particularly bad day you put them round your neck

I have an airtag on mine, and keep them clipped to my trousers, but still managed to lock myself out.

So I bought a smart lock. I always have my phone - although i have stashed a dongle to let myself in again should the impossible ever happen and I leave it at home.

It's been life-changing (and occasionally useful - eg when I forgot the chimney sweep or plumber was coming and needed to let them in while I raced home)

Oh, sorry, I realised that just solves the knock-on problem of losing your keys :) The keys now stay in the bag, since the main time I lost them, was letting myself in the house whilst carrying who knows what and putting them down/in a pocket/whatever and not being able to find them again.

I had an art teacher in school who used to always be losing things. Eventually she got a keyring that emitted a beep every 15 minutes so she didn't lose her keys. Used to drive us mad but it worked! I don't know what they would be called but a quick google/amazon search might yield some results.

Have them on a chain attached to your handbag or clothing.
