Car insurance for teenager - 3 grand!! Is that normal?

Has anyone recently sorted car insurance for their child?
my daughter passed in December and this week she bought a car (1 litre - £4,500)
the insurance is coming out as £3,000.

any tips or Recommendations for sites to use?
this was using confused.com

tried the usual- third party only, black box, no extras like legal protection and etc, on a driveway in a low crime area, added myself to the policy.
still it’s almost more than the value of the car 😢

Mine used Acorn. 8yo 1L Focus cost 6k, black box, his dad as a named driver.

£1800 fully comp

It’s gone crazy. We looked for Dc1 currently only 16 but 17 soon. We got quotes of £3k on their first car which is just a 1.2 VW Polo. Luckily we do have savings for Dc and will pay the first insurance outright so they can get to college. However DC will have to save some money towards the year after.

flatwhiteinabucket · 18/03/2024 13:56

Eldest DS passed their test 2 years ago, 2nd DC is looking at insurance 2.5 times the price. Same car. (1l manual, 20 plate)

We spoke to a few friends in the insurance industry: VW Polo and Golf are always higher, as they are the one of the most stolen cars. Anything higher than 1l will be more (as will, perversely a car over approx 7 years old)

It's a minefield!

Parking on the street might be cheaper.

it used to be that garage was safest/cheapest, then driveway then street but so many people damage their cars getting them into their garages that it became an uprating factor, and if a car is on the drive it’s pretty obvious to thieves which house the car keys are in, so that’s now a risk factor too.

TallulahBetty · 18/03/2024 14:08

Can you add yourselves as named drivers? That should bring it down a bit

GiantPuffaJacket · 18/03/2024 14:15

Thank you for your replies.
at least I know it is “normal” and not that I’ve done anything wrong.
going to keep looking and she will have to be patient!

I’m not missing the point - it’s just absolutely bizarre to me that the quotes coming in for an almost brand new car, worth far more and with a bigger engine are so much less than a little 1l run around. £5k for a 2023 1.5l Mini vs £16k for a 1l 2013 polo

New cars have so much more safety kit and technology that they are a safer bet for all drivers, but especially young ones. They have to have the brake assist that helps prevent rear end crashes, they now have to have reverse park assist to stop the car reversing into things, they have to have speed limit assist to warn of speed limits. The list goes on an on. So it's far harder to have an expensive accident in a new car than one even 5 years old never mind 10. And I imagine that most accidents involving young people involve driving into things, so any systems that reduce the likelihood of that happening will disproportionality benefit young / inexperienced drivers

Reading all this I am genuinely baffled as to how I was able to sort ds2’s insurance for less than £800. I had several quotes under £1k inc the renewal.

One year’s NCB true; it’s a 10yo 1l car. Was I oddly lucky?

massistar · 18/03/2024 17:22

There are so many factors at play in the algorithm. Where you live and how many claims there have been your area. Also, what cars have more claims from that demographic. Eg. The car of the moment for male teens round here is the Clio so it's going to come up more expensive than something less trendy. Having an older car won't mean it costs less either as there can be an assumption that you won't be as careful in it. It's all to do with data.

To a PP with much higher quote on Clio we are in a more rural area than London .

How long ago was this though? Insurance has taken a big jump, even more so in the last few months

Volvovolvo · 18/03/2024 17:38

Sadly I actually think that's pretty good for her age

GreatWorldAtlas · 18/03/2024 17:51

DD17 passed last month and cheapest we could get to add her to insurance on my car was £800 with a black box (I'm the main driver, dh also additional driver with points), but if we added DD18 who has been driving for 18 months (and is a medical student which seems to make it dearer than other students) it shot up to £5k.

DD18 was £1200 on same car without black box 18 months ago but £1800 at renewal time (so we took her off as she is away mostly) in Sep. Def shot up in that year!

@flatwhiteinabucket thanks, I didn’t know this. We have a big drive with cameras but I’ll definitely make sure I charge them more often than I do.

SwissPea · 18/03/2024 19:07

We found TopCashback compare the cheapest for my son's insurance. He managed to insure his Mazda mx5 (old car not new one) for under £1000. He now has a Z4 ( again older model) which he paid £1200 for in insurance. Maybe a 2 seater works out cheaper as you cant carry a group of people ...

doggybootcamp · 18/03/2024 19:09

We've been in this scenario. It's cheaper to start the insurance a week or two in future for some reason but we found it cheapest overall to change our own cars to admiral and add dcs on as a family member, thus getting multi car discount and bringing it to around £800

PrimalLass · 18/03/2024 20:11

Insurance companies are writing cars off over 10 years old rather than fixing them. That prob adds to that it.

DS (18) bought a 2009 Renault Clio worth about £1,000.

Got comprehensive cover with Tesco Insurance (with a black box and me as a named driver) for £950.
