Car insurance for teenager - 3 grand!! Is that normal?

GiantPuffaJacket · 17/03/2024 21:09

Has anyone recently sorted car insurance for their child?
my daughter passed in December and this week she bought a car (1 litre - £4,500)
the insurance is coming out as £3,000.

any tips or Recommendations for sites to use?
this was using confused.com

tried the usual- third party only, black box, no extras like legal protection and etc, on a driveway in a low crime area, added myself to the policy.
still it’s almost more than the value of the car 😢

Yep it's normal.

Dewdilly · 17/03/2024 21:12

Yes, it’s normal. My DD waited till their mid-20s before getting a car.

TickleMyPickle · 17/03/2024 21:13

We’ve just been through this with my 17 year old son.
He bought a £4k 1 litre Kia picanto and managed to get the insurance through Ticker for £1,700 with my husband also on the policy.

MindHowYouGoes · 17/03/2024 21:15

Third party only is very often more expensive than fully comprehensive.

someone will no doubt be along shortly to tell you they insured the car in their own name and added their child as a named driver - that’s insurance fraud if it’s your child’s car or they’re the main user

CalmConfident · 17/03/2024 21:15

We’re doing the same thing…it’s insane!

CeriB82 · 17/03/2024 21:20

My DD passed at 17 and hers was fully comp at £900.

your quote is way over!

smilingeleanor · 17/03/2024 21:20

my daughter is 18 - got 1350 on a fiat 500 with me on the insurance - fully comp

StormsAreNeverNamedAfterMe · 17/03/2024 21:25

Just did this the other day when DC passed
Also 1L group 2 car, fully comp

It is awful, ours also coming in at £3k+

I did manage to get it down by £800 by getting quotes for next week, rather than same/following day, with DH and me as additional named drivers, DC as main driver.
Same size and group car for older DC 4 years ago was £1200 less, all other details the same

cryinglaughing · 17/03/2024 21:26

We asked a broker to sort insurance out, they got it for about £1k less than we could, was still £4400 😳

massistar · 17/03/2024 21:29

We got DS's for just over a grand with Marmalade. One litre Clio.

Letmegetoff · 17/03/2024 21:33

My sons was just under 3k in December, he's 20 and had just passed his test and got his first car.

It's gone up considerably over the past few months, I wonder if some of the replies on here are from people who's kids passed a while ago as we couldn't get it any cheaper at all, even quoting on lots of different types of car while he was still looking made very little difference

clary · 17/03/2024 21:33

I posted this on another similar thread and was told it couldn’t be true, but ds2 (who admittedly is 20) has just paid for his second year of insurance on a 10yo 1 litre Citroen for less than £800.

Last year with no NCB it was just under £1k.

With a black box which we didn’t want to do this year’s lowest quote was £502. I’m on the policy as well as named driver and we live somewhere quiet fwiw.

This is with compare the market if that helps? I gather first time insurance has spiked tho.

x2boys · 17/03/2024 21:37

Its the age unfortunately ,insurance companies assume young drivers will be more irresponsible hence the high prices

MaloneMeadow · 18/03/2024 04:12

Sadly yes! The lowest quote that I’ve been able to find for 19 year old DD is £5k with a black box, which now somehow seems to be a bargain in the crazy world that we live in. This is for a 1.5l Mini.

I nearly fell off my chair last week when the quote for a 1l run around VW Polo came in at £16k, double what the car is even worth!! Absolute madness and makes 0 sense, at this point they’re just plucking numbers out of thin air

How long ago was this though? Unless your DD passed very recently you can’t compare what you paid to what young drivers are needing to pay now. Prices have massively shot up since September according to our insurance broker

I would absolutely recommend having legal protection, especially as a young, new driver. I was involved in a non fault accident 2 years ago and had severe injuries. I had legal protection which meant the solicitors did all the claim for me for injury compensation. The total fees came to around £10k which I would have had to pay myself. Or used a no win no fee but then they usually take a large fee. Legal protection is usually around £100 per year and is 100% worth it

i guess its also down to where you live

Dressinggownlife · 18/03/2024 11:15

Sadly normal. Infact that’s not bad. Ds was £4200 aged 19 on a l.2 vehicle. He’s paying it monthly.

So strange we got a quote on a new clio 1L and was £5500. We are in London. I hear it makes a difference if people live in country or rural location.

People saying the insurance being more than the car are missing the point, it's the young person that's the risk.
Statistically they're a danger to themselves and other drivers, the amounts paid out in claims is crazy, and costs of parts and labour are huge.

This.

Story from the BBC News website recently.

"According to new BBC analysis, young men are four times more likely than other drivers to be convicted of dangerous or careless driving.

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) data for the UK also reveals men under the age of 25 are four times more likely to be caught drug-driving - and twice as likely to be caught drink-driving."

Yes, it's young men, but insurance companies aren't allowed to differentiate between males and females, so all young drivers face high premiums.

PinkiOcelot · 18/03/2024 11:39

Have you tried Privilege? They were good for my dd. Was over 2 years ago though.

I’m not missing the point - it’s just absolutely bizarre to me that the quotes coming in for an almost brand new car, worth far more and with a bigger engine are so much less than a little 1l run around. £5k for a 2023 1.5l Mini vs £16k for a 1l 2013 polo

onwardsup4 · 18/03/2024 13:26

Try the start date for a few weeks away I find that makes a big difference

inkblackheart · 18/03/2024 13:28

Dis renewal has just come in at £2k with a black box and he's been driving for a year already.
