So where on earth do you start when you want to buy a bed?

Facebook marketplace is full of shit

most retail parks have furniture shops. IKEA is a good start.
depends whereabouts you are?

Beezknees · 15/03/2024 15:41

I got mine from a local business.

sciencemama · 15/03/2024 15:41

I've literally bought my latest bed from Amazon had it 3 years so far. No complaints or sign of wear or any damage either

BeyondMyWits · 15/03/2024 15:47

Argos, Dunelm, IKEA, Dreams, Benson for beds, oak furniture land, amazon, DFS etc... Argos is a good cheap place to start. Ours are from Dreams.

Depends on your budget for bed?

Trying not to be snarky...but just googling double bed will bring up hundreds of options that's not fb marketplace.

But for perhaps a more helpful view:

There's the specialist bed retailers - dreams and Bensons for beds, for a start. They'll be pricey(ier), but you can go in and choose one, with an assistant who will offer recommendations, help make sure you get the right mattress, offer disposal of your existing bed and delivery & assembly.

Other common retailers - argos, ikea, dunelm will have reasonable quality double beds with levels of cost for different budgets. They will have little to no advice as to what's good/bad, but should at least be able to tell you if the mattress you've chosen matches the bed you want. If you have some questions regarding features, then you might need to research or ask here. They'll deliver, but assembly might not be available, nor disposal.

Less furniture centric retailers like the range or b&m may have some of the cheapest options, but quality and other services like delivery or recommendations on mattress may be debatable.

There's a few online retailers, like wayfair - but they might be hard to order from if you're not sure what you're getting.

If you're not sure on what you're actually looking for in a double bed...then think if you need storage, and what you want it to look like.

Hadalifeonce · 15/03/2024 15:50

We bought the last one from a local business dealing exclusively with beds.

Dreams was good for us.

PonyPatter44 · 15/03/2024 15:53

This is an....odd.... thread.

But if its kosher, we went to Dreams. The bedframe came from Dreams, but the mattress came from IKEA. The mattresses in Dreams were either very uncomfortable or very expensive, but the IKEA ones were pretty nice.

If you get a bed / mattress from Argos or Amazon, you can't try before you buy.

stcrispinsday · 15/03/2024 15:54

Sueno are brilliant.

GasPanic · 15/03/2024 15:54

I bought a distressed pine frame new off ebay for £150. Very easy to assemble and disassemble and get upstairs yourself.

Then I got a really decent mattress to go with it.

Whatever your solution remember most people spend a long time in bed asleep. Maybe 1/3 of their lives ! So it is worthwhile getting something good that is very comfortable.

I think the comfort of the bed is more in the mattress than the frame. But if you have large people then probably my frame would not cut it.

PandaCwtch · 15/03/2024 15:56

Given that you are asking on here, with previous reference to FB marketplace, I'm guessing that you don't really know what you want, or what the options are. I'd recommend going to a furniture store or bed store in person to have a look. Even if you don't want to buy in store, the ability to look at what's out there will be useful to you.

As an example, do you want a wooden or metal frame, or a divan bed? Do you want under-bed storage? What sort of mattress do you want? Soft/firm, pockets, springs, foam, it goes on and on. Go to the shop. Lie on the beds.

Whats odd about it?

I'm frustrated as wanted to buy a second hand bed frame from someone local. but all the ads on the facebook marketplace are scams

Cookerhood · 15/03/2024 15:59

What sort of scams?
We've had beds from IKEA, John Lewis & Dreams.

SussexBonfireViking · 15/03/2024 15:59

OK - so ordered a cheapish frame from Amazon, thanks PP

Now looking for a mattress, know that needs to be good quality

Thanks all

Check second hand thoroughly for bedbugs too.

This is a scam - first picture makes you think that they are selling a bed from a house, but when you look at the details, its clearly a business

Marketplace is very dodgy agreed.

Mattresses it is worth going somewhere you can try them - you will have a preference and if you buy a firm one but prefer soft it won't feel great.

Ikea stores have a big selection. Also John Lewis.

You don't need to buy from there but it'll help you work out what you want.

GasPanic · 15/03/2024 16:04

One more thing, if you go for mattress, make sure you get one with a returns policy ? Then if you don't like you can return after a time - normally 14 days.

You need the time because in my experience it takes a bit of time to get used to a new bed to see whether it is OK or not. Plus the mattresses take time to expand properly once they are out of the pack.

SussexBonfireViking · 15/03/2024 16:05

and this one
total and utter rubbish
