Where is the cheapest place to buy clothes new?

If you want to buy basic women’s clothing, where do you think is the cheapest place to buy new? Charity shops are inconsistent and you can’t always find what you need, and I you can’t get underwear and socks for example. So if you needed very basic items: underwear, nightwear, leggings, basic t-shirts and such, where would be consistently the cheapest? I haven’t shopped in years but am on an extremely tight budget. I’m losing weight and need new clothes, and I’m still losing so they don’t need to last for a long time. I’m thinking maybe Primark but I have experience as I was too big to shop there before, and I’m not sure if they’re more expensive than supermarkets?

Primark is the cheapest for most things by a long way.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/03/2024 19:27

Primark is cheapest and has a huge range, including all the basics.

Primark isn't cheap anymore. TK Maxx and Matalan might be your best bet.

Precipice · 14/03/2024 19:28

Charity shops are largely not new items. Is it really necessary that they be new, rather than just in a condition like new? Except underwear.

Consider looking through Vinted for 'New with tags'. Lots of items are there for 1-2 pounds, which with postage will make 4-5.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/03/2024 19:28

TK Maxx isn't cheap at all, and certainly not as cheap as Primark.

pleasecallmeback · 14/03/2024 19:30

I would stick to supermarkets for underwear, Amazon for leggings. and Vinted and eBay for everything else. Search for bundles of clothes in the size you want, you can get some fabulous bargains.

MrsWimpy · 14/03/2024 19:31

You won't beat primark for high street basics. The sizing can be a bit off but just look at the garment not the tag.

Online it'll be SHEIN or the dreaded Temu

BabyofMine · 14/03/2024 19:35

Thank you so far! I’m not objectionable about used items, I buy used books for example all the time, but every time I’ve tried to shop in charity shops I’ve never found anything in the right size, and I just don’t have the time with the hours I’m doing at work to go through charity shops.

I’ve never even looked at Vinted, is it like FB Marketplace where you go to someone’s house to collect? I’m just really struggling for time for that but if it’s delivery like on eBay that might work.

Vinted, search for New with Tags. It's like eBay before eBay was flooded with sellers from China.

So much clothing out there not even worn once.

Hatty65 · 14/03/2024 19:40

Supermarkets are a good bet, generally. F&F at Tesco and George at Asda all do good stuff if you've got a large store near you.

Primark rarely go above a size 18 and they come up small (and badly made). I find if you are not pretty thin they are not very well fitted. On the other hand they don't need to be great if you are basically just after PJs and leggings.

takemeawayagain · 14/03/2024 19:40

I love Primark! It's where I buy all my clothes and is very cheap - although not quite as cheap as it was.

HelloMiss · 14/03/2024 19:42

Supermarkets are cheaper than primark these days!

And superior quality and sizing

Primark or the supermarket clothing aisles. Much the same price wise.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 14/03/2024 20:02

I think if your shopping the final clearance In sales you'll get some real bargains. For example zara sale items go down extremely cheap, I've got jeans for £5.99 and dresses for £9.99 so cheaper than primark.

I have never looked at the clothes before but have bought two tops in morrisons this week. £10.00 each.

vinted bundles

Anewuser · 14/03/2024 20:10

Vinted are great as most deliver to you. Think all mine have been Hermes (or Evri, whatever they’re called now). Our delivery driver is great and I’ve even had stuff delivered to my work.

Darklane · 14/03/2024 20:12

Asda is good for underwear & socks in particular. I have several of their £8 bras, size 36G, that are a far better fit than M&S ones I have. Socks & knickers tend to be £5 to £7 for a six pack, really nice quality.

Citrusandginger · 14/03/2024 20:15

Bon Marche / peacocks may be worth a look for underwear if you are near. I always thought of them as a bit if an old lady shop, but recently had to buy teen some emergency leggings after hers got a hole in on a day out & they had a decent selection. I bought a bunch of work tights too.

NotMeNoNo · 14/03/2024 20:16

If you want very basic T shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, look for brands like Fruit of the Loom (often used for branding) which you can buy on ebay or online. They tend to last really well and are as cheap as anywhere.

ForsythiaPlease · 14/03/2024 21:28

Matalan

snoopyfanaccountant · 14/03/2024 21:51

George at Asda has self-coloured t-shirts at £8 for 2.

SootspriteSearcher · 14/03/2024 22:11

If u want cheap new I personally find shein great. I've bought dresses for £5, tops for £3 and jeans for £8. I've often been complimented when wearing clothes from there and lasts just as well as the high street brands.

Their plus size range is very good too, and lots of choice.

And if its not last chance clearance stuff its free returns.

Word of warning read reviews and it is hit and miss, some things are fantastic for the price, others not so much!
