Has anyone ever had an urgent call following a blood test?

Idly musing as went for a blood test this afternoon. I know I'm anaemic (keeps coming back when I stop iron supplements). Just wondering how serious it would have to be to get an urgent call from your GP if something serious showed up? Has this happened to anyone?

Yep I had a call the next day to say I needed to go in straight away and it turned out I was anemic, which I already knew, and not even that badly.
My son had some very serious results come back and the doctors never contacted us, it wasn't until three weeks later when I had an appointment I double checked and they told me. They had always said that if any results came back that needed action they would contact us.
Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to whether our doctors contact us about results 🤷‍♀️

HariboFrenzy · 13/03/2024 16:14

@Daisypod that's shocking! You definitely assume no news is good news don't you? I hope your son is OK now

Yes I was told to go to a&e straight away as might be about to have a heart attack. Turned out the test had given a false result and the doctor said they have at least two people sent to them every day with false high readings (potassium).

Yes, nurse rang to say I was extremely low in B12 and had to go in straight away. I had been practically falling asleep under my desk for a few months, and it wasn't till I started getting my levels back to normal that I realised how slowly I'd been walking. It was all a bit mad.

Gosh that must have been scary! Thank goodness it was a false alarm!

Yes, I vividly remember the day my Dad (53) was called back in by the GP the morning after after a blood test taken because he was feeling generally unwell and tired. It was leukaemia, he was admitted to hospital that afternoon.

SignoraVolpe · 13/03/2024 16:18

Yes. Last year I was told to make an urgent appointment after a blood test I had for fatigue and unexplained weight loss.
I was diagnosed with CLL ( blood cancer).
Fortunately I’m watch and wait but it’s incurable and I just have to hope it doesn’t progress much.

My MIL had a call at 1.15 in the morning following a blood test earlier in the afternoon after a locum doctor was sent to the house following a call to 111.

They told her that they had dispatched an ambulance and to she had to go to hospital immediately. She blacked out in the ambulance, was in intensive care for 3 days and was lucky to be alive. She had a severe electrolyte imbalance caused by long term use of PPIs.

Her own GP had been misdiagnosing her symptoms for weeks and the locum recognised straight away what the issue was.

Invisibla · 13/03/2024 16:29

I had a blood test due to restless and painful legs.
Got a phone call the next day telling me to go straight to A & E due to anemia.
The did several more tests and referred me for a blood transfusion and iron infusion the next day

mitogoshi · 13/03/2024 16:29

My friends grandson was called just a few hours later by the children's hospital following blood tests at the gp - leukaemia. Been a whirlwind ever since, poor kid

TheHangryAzureBird · 13/03/2024 16:34

Yep, several times and none were ever genuinely urgent.

The most embarrassing was when the GP wanted to see me and it turned out to be about my alcohol levels in my liver. I don’t drink that often at all but went away for a hen weekend and got really drunk…and then had my blood test the following Monday. Not sure if he believed me when I said it was a one off!

Brbreeze · 13/03/2024 16:34

Maternity bloods I've had a call within 4 hours. Had to go in the next day for further tests.
GP bloods I've had a call within 2 days but just to offer me an appointment a couple of days later.
The results were visible on my NHS app though, so I knew it was just low iron before the GP appt.

Lifeinlists · 13/03/2024 16:47

I always check mine on the NHS app.
Before that was a thing I was once rung up by my gp and told I needed to be in hospital as my liver results were so abnormal. I had salmonella poisoning which had affected my liver and I was pretty ill for a few weeks.

It did explain why I felt so bad!

How frightening! Good job the locum was on the ball - sounds like the ambulance was just in time!

Yes the next day. I needed folates the prescription was at the chemist. Never found out why though. Three months supply. I was never called back in. That was a young locum

YoureWinningAtLife · 13/03/2024 16:53

I know someone who was contacted the same day after a blood test and told to go to A&E. He spent two days in hospital and had an iron infusion.

stomachamelon · 13/03/2024 17:13

How long on average do emergency bloods take to come back to the doctor?
I have a reoccurring infection in my neck- already had three rounds of antibiotics- bloods taken this morning.
Just wondering when to check the app?

NellieJean · 13/03/2024 17:20

DH had a routine blood test one lunchtime and got a call mid afternoon to say he needed to be seen by a doctor. He started to arrange an appointment for a suitable day the following week when the receptionist said how about 4.30 today.
It wasn’t good news but he was cured after extensive treatment and is fit and well.

Groovee · 13/03/2024 17:24

Dh had bloods done at 2pm on the Thursday. By 9am on the Friday the GP who took the bloods phoned saying he was to go to hospital and told him where the bed for him was. Scary stuff but they were on the ball.

FloofyBird · 13/03/2024 17:27

Yes. Very anaemic and ended up with a 6 pint blood transfusion.

calamariqueen · 13/03/2024 17:28

Had bloods taken at 8:30am and called back at 12:30pm to book an appointment with the GP- pre covid! This was for through the floor results on thyroid tests

TeamLoganHuntzberger · 13/03/2024 17:29

Yes within a few hours and late at night for my DS - was admitted immediately for Leukaemia and transferred the next day to Addenbrooks to start treatment.

QuiltedHippo · 13/03/2024 17:31

DH had some on a Friday when had glandular fever, knew something was bad when he got a call on the Saturday. Basically had zero immune system and was to tell him to keep away from any illness and go to hospital if anything worsened

Yes, my TSH was 89. My gp telephoned and said he was coming straight to my house with some medication.

stomachamelon · 13/03/2024 17:41
