Has anyone ever had an urgent call following a blood test?

Idly musing as went for a blood test this afternoon. I know I'm anaemic (keeps coming back when I stop iron supplements). Just wondering how serious it would have to be to get an urgent call from your GP if something serious showed up? Has this happened to anyone?

Yes, by a locum GP, very worried about low lymphocyte count, I did ask her what the number was, explained the disease modifying drug I was prescribed by specialist, reduces lymphocyte count, rang the treatment nurses at the hospital for advice, they said nothing to worry about at all, I was well within range. I was worried at the time, the main reason for coming of this particular disease modifying therapy is due to problems showing up in the blood work. But thankfully all ok, still on the same drug.

Hi @TorroFerney poor man. Glad they sorted him. Hope he's back to good health now. My endocrinologist was very dismissive of my levels of calcium and pth. I have regular bloods now for the past 7 years but still feel absolutely rubbish each day which they put down to fibromyalgia 😭

That sounds rough. NHS were excellent.

This was years ago when I was in my 20's and living on my own...
Had been to the doctors that day about pain in the back of my leg. Had bloods taken and sent off home. I went to the cinema with a friend that evening, came home late and went straight to bed. Around midnight I had a primary care trust doctor hammering on my door (I'd not checked my phone whilst out- had several missed calls). They suspected DVT and injected me with a blood thinner on my living room sofa! Hospital appointment the next day for scans, but all clear!

Every time I have my bloods taken I'm told to call the GP surgery for results because they don't call us with them

Yes I was told to go to a&e straight away as might be about to have a heart attack. Turned out the test had given a false result and the doctor said they have at least two people sent to them every day with false high readings (potassium).

This happened to me. I was petrified!

This is fairly common in terms of the sodium and potassium levels change rapidly so if the lab leaves your bloods til last in the pile you can get a falsely high/low result. Drives us mad.

Not me but my husband. He was called on Sunday night at 8pm to get to the hospital urgently after a blood test earlier that day.

spoiler alert, he has/had leukeamia. (AML). NHS acted incredibly promptly in picking it up and calling him to come in. It was the hospital blood team that called.

They do if they find something that needs urgent attention

Zingy123 · 17/03/2024 23:38

@UpsideLeft they call if it's an emergency.

I'm so sorry. AML is just such a bastard. I'm glad the NHS were so prompt in treating your husband! They were brilliant with my dad.
