Dd sprained ankle and can’t walk; what do I do?

It happened last night. Given Ibuprofen and iced it. She’s hopping around this morning. But she can’t hop around school all day, and she has to go to school, so what do we do? Should I take her to the minor injuries place? It’s not broken but is very painful. She has a violin exam this afternoon - argh.

Your child can't bear weight on their ankle and you're asking if you should get her medical help.

If course you should take her!

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 13/03/2024 07:05

You take her to hospital and definitely don't send her to school!

Her exam can be rescheduled.

Momstermunch · 13/03/2024 07:05

I'd take her to minor injuries to double check it's not broken. I know you say it's not but how can you be sure?

If she can't weight bear the only way to know it isn't broken it to Xray it.

SableGrape · 13/03/2024 07:06

You only think it's a sprain - it could be a fracture! And even if it's not she shouldn't be walking on it anyway. Her ankle is more important than her music exam!

QuestionableMouse · 13/03/2024 07:08

I did the same last summer - but I walked on mine for two weeks before getting an xray and it was broken and didn't heal right. Keep her off it and get her checked!

Mindymomo · 13/03/2024 07:08

Get an elastic bandage, it needs to be quite tight, so get a couple of sizes or double up, it really helps to take the pain away. I’ve sprained my ankle a few times, keep it elevated when sitting down. Also the ibuprofen gel to rub on is quite good for sprains, there’s no point in getting it checked if you think it is a sprain.

First reply got it in one. Can't believe you're even wondering what to do and worrying about a bloody exam 🙄

VenusClapTrap · 13/03/2024 07:09

Ok! I’ll take her to the minor injuries place. Didn’t want to waste NHS time for them to say it’s just a sprain go away. She’s 13, not a littly.

Unfortunately you just can't know for sure it isn't broken. Minor injuries unit for sure. Even if a sprain, she shouldn't be hoping around, it should be raised and rested.

MushMonster · 13/03/2024 07:10

Wait a moment, you have not taken her to A&E or the injuries centre yet?
Go, straight away!

They will take an X-ray and check her ankle and decide whether she needs a boot, crutches, she can or cannot walk on it....

beAsensible1 · 13/03/2024 07:10

She’s a child why risk it, take her to be checked.
Especially as she can’t put any weight on, minor injuries and give her music school a call to rearrange.

Sirzy · 13/03/2024 07:10

Unless you have x ray vision you can’t be sure it’s not broken.

even if it isn’t broken there are plenty of other injuries which may need treatment.

get her checked

I never understand this attitude about wasting time. Get your child seen and find out if there's an issue, so what if it's 'just a sprain'.

Unless OP has x-ray vision, she has absolutely no idea of knowing whether it's just a sprain.

She's 13, she knows if she's in pain.

This is what the NHS is there for. Take her to MIU

AmeliaSmallhope · 13/03/2024 07:26

She can’t bear weight on it and you can’t know for sure that it’s not broken.

Momstermunch · 13/03/2024 07:26

Not wasting NHS time involves being sensible and looking after our health by doing things like attending miu to get this stuff checked out. If you leave it and it is fractured THEN you'll be wasting NHS time because the treatment will be much more complex if you eventually seek help and she's been walking on a broken ankle.

This is really bad advice.

A and E

Copperoliverbear · 13/03/2024 07:32

Get there as early as possible so you have time to get back for the exam.

3luckystars · 13/03/2024 07:32

It’s not wasting time when there is actually something wrong. Good luck.
