It happened last night. Given Ibuprofen and iced it. She’s hopping around this morning. But she can’t hop around school all day, and she has to go to school, so what do we do? Should I take her to the minor injuries place? It’s not broken but is very painful. She has a violin exam this afternoon - argh.

Get an elastic bandage, it needs to be quite tight, so get a couple of sizes or double up, it really helps to take the pain away. I’ve sprained my ankle a few times, keep it elevated when sitting down. Also the ibuprofen gel to rub on is quite good for sprains, there’s no point in getting it checked if you think it is a sprain.

And how on earth is the op meant to know if it's just a sprain until she gets medical advice?

I managed to hobble around for a week assuming I'd sprained my ankle. When I finally had it checked I was put in a cast as I'd broken a bone.

You should have taken her last night. Poor girl.

I fell a couple of years ago and hobbled about on a 'sprained ankle'. It got better after a couple of weeks, then a few weeks later I fell again! I went to a&e and they said 'no wonder you fell again, you broke it the first time you fell'! She needs an xray - it's the only way you will know if it's a sprain or a break. I thought mine was a sprain and I'd broken it!

Make sure they x ray. I got told by minor injuries that I had a sprain and was sent home with paracetamol and weight bearing exercises as they didn't check. Ended up needing several days in hospital and surgery as the fracture was so complex.

Even if it’s a sprain, she won’t be able to bear weight for a while . So she needs crutches!! And you’ll need A&E for that.

But YY to needed and XRay. Nothing to do with how old she is.
I mean, I got sent to A&E as an adult by by the out of hours doctors and previously by a consultant friend.
