Announced today that non-violent prisoners will be released early to help the current overcrowding in prisons.
A sensible solution finally

so they are not doing the time then that they were given, how is that a good thing? every crime has a victim and they deserve justice not the criminals, this is a bad move and a bad mistake

NuffSaidSam · 12/03/2024 19:28

It's probably the best option out of the range of terrible options available. It's not great though.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/03/2024 19:29

Depends what they mean by 'violent'. Is there a linky?

So drug dealers, stalkers, fraudsters. Sounds like a terrible idea.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 12/03/2024 19:34

Not really. Maybe it might be fine for “one off” offenders but many are coming out homeless because there’s no housing support, mentally ill with no health support, penniless because their benefits take weeks to get reinstated, in need of adult social care but their needs are not “high” enough, in need of rehab but there’s no spaces… so what do they do? Offend again and go straight back to prison, which is actually more expensive as you’ve got the police’s time, the probation service’s time, the court’s time etc to pay for. I’ve had 2 people call me up this week begging to be recalled as it’s better than being on the streets.

Rosiiee · 12/03/2024 19:38

@ineedtogoshoppingnow what other option does the state have? They’re not talking about releasing sex offenders or murderers and it’s only taking 2 months off their sentences.

BoohooWoohoo · 12/03/2024 19:41

That’s going to help to deal with the current shoplifting epidemic.

HelloMiss · 12/03/2024 19:43

We have no room!

Something proactive at last!

Quite. The posted article doesn't say 'non-violent'. I can see every stalker released considering how crimes against women are treated.

What about those IPP prisoners? Many are years over their tariff and brought back on recall for things like missing an appointment.
Once back in with no release date, their mental health deteriorates and they end up in there even longer as there is not sufficient secure mental health places.

HelloMiss · 12/03/2024 19:47

The article say public protection so stalkers would come under that

Otherwise what do you want? Cells occupied by thieves and rapists on bail because there is no room?

That's the reality.

Blankscreen · 12/03/2024 19:47

Ite only 2 months off. I doubt keeping them inside for an extra 2 months will make any difference.

So the victims are not thought of in this? Or is 'had a bad childhood' to be blamed again and again

HelloMiss · 12/03/2024 19:48

IPP sentencing is being looked at. I know a few who are now released.

Whether it’s a good idea or not is kind of by the by at this point anyway though - there’s no room and no money for more so there’s no other choice really!

How long of a custodial sentence do you think convicted shoplifters tend to get?

Very short sentences serve no purpose, prisoners know their time is short and so take no part in any improvement programmes, they just cause bother.

OP posts:
HelloMiss · 12/03/2024 19:55

@rarta do you work in a custodial position?
