Recommendations for best places UK for a solo long weekend?

I am desperate for a break. I haven’t had one on my own for over 20 years! I need to recharge my batteries.

not interested in Spas, has to be UK.

I like pottering around, love parks, seaside, interesting pretty places. I don’t want London. I was thinking two nights in a hotel. I won’t have a car so somewhere I will have plenty to see by foot for 2 days. I’ll be spending evenings in hotel room with wine and bubble bath so not bothered about nightlife. Does such an area exist?

Sooo....coast. If you want to north Devon (Barnstaple) by train, there is a coastal bus route that would take you to Appledore (tiny maritime museum, interesting wandering down tiny lanes, pick up lunch at John's deli) and then over the estuary to Instow for a big sandy walk. I think the bus also goes near (but not quite to) Fremington Quay which has the Tarka Trail with bike hire and a great cafe. From either Ilfracombe or Bideford (depending on tides) you could do a day boat trip to wild Lundy Island full of puffins and seals.

More urban? I always find it easy to while away at least a day in Brighton. The Pavilion and gardens are beautiful and the city itself great for people watching. The beach makes for a walking workout and I love the ghost remains of the old pier. I think it's a bit of a love/hate place though.

Bath? lovely parks, shops, historic buildings, museums, etc. Easy to walk around - perfect for pottering- if you stay in the city rather than the outskirts. They have the best spas too if you change your mind! 🤣

Edinburgh? It's not London, but lots to see and do and some beautiful hotels.

Northumberland/around Lindisfarne is an area I've always wanted to see, but not as easy as Edinburgh without a car perhaps.

Liverpool! Loads to do. And not from from the beach.

NotFastButFurious · 12/03/2024 15:11

Edinburgh - loads of green space (arthur's seat, calton hill, the meadows), plenty of historical streets, museums and shops, beach at portobello a short bus ride from the city centre.

bergentrain · 12/03/2024 15:16

Bath, Wells (Somerset), Cambridge, York, Edinburgh

Dogonthebed · 12/03/2024 15:18

Fab ideas thank you. I would have loved Brighton (never been) I should have said in my op that I’m in Lancashire. Will check how long the train journey is.

4 hours to Brighton, which is doable. Devon is probably ruled out unfortunately although I do love Devon. Bath I haven’t been either so will take a look

Edinburgh definitely i did a solo trip there loads to do mary king street, ghost walks museums, the castle and thats the royal mile i had a whale of a time

Twazique · 12/03/2024 16:43

Cardiff?

Rocknrollstar · 12/03/2024 17:36

I’d say Liverpool. There’s plenty to see and do and mostly walkable. The hop on/hop off bus is good. You can do the Beatles Trail or visit museums and take a ferry across the Mersey. Alternatively, York.

Runnerduck34 · 12/03/2024 17:45

Edinburgh is very walkable( if you don't mind hills) and can easily fill a weekend or more there.
Bath and York are also lovely.
Swansea is also worth considering if you like coastal walks- particularly mumbles area.

Chester? There's plenty to do and you can trot around the city walls. It's all very walkable.

Cardiff? It's beautiful and you can easily spend a morning in the castle, then lunch and a mooch around the shops. There are great bus links down to the bay area.

Leeds? Very urban but there's some historical things to see.

It sounds like a fab weekend!

atiaofthejulii · 12/03/2024 18:12

Liverpool is great, can also take a short train ride to Crosby and enjoy the Antony Gormleys on the beach

JNicko · 12/03/2024 18:15

York is beautiful! Plenty to see and do in a couple of days. I'm from hull and only 50 minute drive from me and it's my favourite place to visit. I was there a few weeks back. This is a photo of the shambles street.

Rye. I love it there. Quirky, nice shops, historical, pretty, good bars and restaurants, camber sands nearby for a nice beach walk, Hastings etc also nearby for historical interest.

MinnieMountain · 12/03/2024 18:21

Bradford on Avon.

MikeRafone · 12/03/2024 20:08

southwold but I don't know how you'd get there without a car as I don't know buses, trains etc from where you are

but once there its beautiful to walk around, seaside town picture perfect etc with nice places to walk and eat

MrsW9 · 12/03/2024 20:32

Oxford? Lots of parks and interesting things to see and do. No seaside, but there are some lovely walks along the river.

helpfulperson · 12/03/2024 20:37

York is lovely or Glasgow. If you fancy somewhere different Dundee is very up and coming with lots of museums and a vibrant city centre plus close enough to travel to St Andrews for a couple of hours.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/03/2024 20:39

York
Then train to Whitby if you want seaside

HesterPrincess · 12/03/2024 20:41

We're in Devon at the moment in the arse end of nowhere (nice site though) but it's not a good place without transport. We've driven miles this week and it's not quite been the relax we'd imagined.

Bath is a gorgeous city, the spa is divine to swim in and there are lots of lovely hotels/restaurants. I'd happily do a city break there alone.

BookWorm45 · 12/03/2024 20:47

Gloucester or Cheltenham both are easily accessible by train and pretty places to potter about in
