What books would you like to see made into film, but at the same time hope they don’t?

A court of thorns and roses.

I absolutely adore these books. I love all of her series TBF and on one hand it would be nice to see a film/tv adaption, but on the other, I hope they aren’t because I don’t think anyone could do them justice

I loved Jemima J and would love to see the film for the LA landscape but at the same time…. No

Was coming on to say the same thing.

Only if they cast Henry Cavill as Rhysand 😮‍💨

I honestly couldn’t picture anyone capable of being Rhys but I’ve just googled him…and yeah I can see it a little

Elinor Oliphant... An important story to tell but couldn't be done well.

Yes

China Mieville’s Perdido Street Station. Such incredible world-building that a film would either be incredible or atrocious.

charabang · 12/03/2024 00:18

Shuggie Bain. I would love to see Agnes portrayed on screen.

ellenpartridge · 12/03/2024 01:08

The 7 husbands of evelyn hugo. I think it is being made by netflix so I really hope they do a good version!

Caswallonthefox · 12/03/2024 03:19

None because the film is never as good as the book

Thinkthisiswrong · 12/03/2024 04:01

Impossible creatures. Would be incredible.

Hatty65 · 12/03/2024 04:17

Nothing from my childhood. The only decent adaptations of children's books have been the Harry Potter series, and that is because JKR remained massively in creative control, insisted on British actors etc.

My favourite books as a child were The Little White Horse - which was made into the most ghastly American film called The Secret of Moonacre and turned into an absolute farce. It was loathsome.

I also loved Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series and again - turned into an appalling American version which had little to do with the books.

Beartown by Fredrik Backman. Sweden did a tv series on it which I can’t bring myself to watch because you can never capture the beauty of a style of writing in a film. There are three books in the series and he’s had a few of his books made into films but omg his style of writing speaks to my heart!

@Hatty65 we have something in common 🤗!

The most magical of books. And that movie version was indeed very disappointing.

PastyMuncher · 12/03/2024 21:25

The Radium Girls such a powerful story that needs attention, but not sure the film could quite do it justice

piscofrisco · 12/03/2024 21:27

In memorium. I think it would work really well as a film or maybe a 2 part tv mini series

GozerTheGozerian · 12/03/2024 21:32

Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. But especially One Hundred Years of Solitude. God I love that book but it would be a nightmare to film and I just don’t think it would translate medium well.

I watched a film adaptation of this on Amazon Prime a few weeks ago. It really didn't do the story justice in the way that the book and a number of podcasts have.

Oh gosh I didn't realise there was one. Maybe I won't watch it! The Cautionary Tale podcast on it was brilliant (in case you've not heard it)

gigigig · 12/03/2024 21:45

The seven sisters series

ColourMeBlue · 12/03/2024 21:49

Maureen Lee.I would love anything, but the icing on the cake would Dancing In The Dark

Absolutely

I frequently imagine my favourite Georgette Heyers on screen, but in fact I think a couple of them have been attempted and the clips I saw were horrifically bad. I don't think she translates.

Magic realism nearly always tanks on screen. Remember the execrable version of Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits?

I’d love someone to adapt Charlotte Brontë’s Villette for the screen, but I do also see why they haven’t.

A good adaptation of Donna Tartt’s The Secret History would be great, but it would need excellent casting and acting, and a very good script. (Everyone I’d cast when I read it first is now dead or far too old…)
