What books would you like to see made into film, but at the same time hope they don’t?

A court of thorns and roses.

I absolutely adore these books. I love all of her series TBF and on one hand it would be nice to see a film/tv adaption, but on the other, I hope they aren’t because I don’t think anyone could do them justice

Aren't those Court of Thorns books for teenagers?

Yes

I read a fair bit of Korean/Japanese translated fiction. Most of them would make incredible films but I would really only want to see them being made in their country of origin.

The 'Before the coffee gets cold' series would be a great film or TV series as would the DallerGut Dream Department store.

I actually hope nobody attempts to make them as I love the books so much as they are.

The Thursday Next series of books. I adore them but I think they're just to complex to successfully transpose to film.

I'd watch that series

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/03/2024 13:26

@SleepingStandingUp me too but would it work? It's a bit like the Hitchhikers Guide - fabulous books, good radio series, dire movie!

EasternStandard · 13/03/2024 13:27

I’d love another watch of On the Beach new version

Trying to think of a director who could do it justice

The original is good as a film but just to see another take

The Maid by Nita Prose. I listenedto it on Audible a couple of weeks after my mum died really suddenly at the end of covid, I was traumatised and numb and I just got so much comfort from it. It deserves to be a movie and I think it’s actually in production, but it just will never be as good as the book and I’ll feel like I have to go and see it and … just all of the ‘stuff’ tied up with it. I can’t imagine anyone playing the main character better than she was in my imagination.

I just googled as I haven't read it and read it's being made into a film with Florence Pugh ,who is an excellent actress.

I really hope she does it justice, that’s great to hear!

I loved Jemima J and would love to see the film for the LA landscape but at the same time…. No

Another fellow lover of Jemima J.

Fair enough. They often seem to be nominated in the YA fiction categories for prizes.

I wish someone would make a series of A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel. The BBC announced they were doing it years ago but nothing has been heard since. It would make incredible TV.

As others have mentioned, I’d also like to see a proper TV adaptation of The Dark is Rising, set in Britain in the 70s with a British cast. The recent radio adaptation was let down by dreadful acting, and the less said about the abomination that was the 2007 film the better!

Bichette · 13/03/2024 17:22

Yes to A Place of Greater Safety. I've tried to read that book 3 times and given up. Whereas I loved the Wolf Hall series.
The Secret History definitely and also Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid. I think Reese Witherspoon would do a good adaptation of this.

PermanentTemporary · 13/03/2024 18:10

A Place of Greater Safety was something we all read in the sixth form after seeing the film Danton with Gérard Depardieu and certainly in my case falling madly for Camille Desmoulins. So I recommend that film.

Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. But especially One Hundred Years of Solitude. God I love that book but it would be a nightmare to film and I just don’t think it would translate medium well.

I remember watching a decent film of Chronicle of a Death Foretold around 1987 with Rupert Everett in.

The seven sisters series

Supposedly this was happening, but not sure whether it's ever come to fruition. They're great stories. I find myself fantasy casting the sisters regularly.

FizzyStream · 14/03/2024 20:38

The Rose Code by Kate Quinn. In fact, any of her books.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 14/03/2024 21:34

Miss Benson's Beetle by Rachel Joyce. I loved this book and it should make a great film. But I fear the relationships wouldn't be nuanced enough.

caramelcustard · 14/03/2024 23:11

Yes to The Secret History .
Also The Snow Child Eowyn Ivey.
Most disappointing film adaptation I've seen was John Fowles The Magus.
