Where would you go on holiday alone?

I have 7 days when my children are on holiday with their Dad. I want to go away. This will be in early June. I have between £600-£2000 to spend on flights and accomodation but would prefer to not be at the top end if possible. I'm in my 40s and not into nightlife but not massively into art galleries, museums etc either.

Essentials:
Warm or hot weather.
Beautiful buildings and/or beautiful scenery.
A safe place, not rife with pickpockets.

Would like:
Things to see and do e.g. cathedrals, maybe a beach, nice places to eat, maybe a castle or palace, maybe a pool, maybe a zoo.
A place where lots of people speak English as I'm travelling by myself.
A nice hotel.

I hate:
Barren landscapes
The Canary Islands (sorry if you love them).
Complex public transport, I'd rather an easy to walk/navigate place

Thanks for any ideas. I initially thought Rome but it's super expensive for the week I can go and pickpocketing seems high. I thought maybe Valencia but I haven't looked into that one much yet. I have been to Seville and loved it so maybe would like Valencia. I've considered Portugal but don't know where.

I'd go Greece or Morroco - just because I love them.

Barcelona is good.

I liked Marrakesh but I've been told other people consider it unsafe.

Turkey

Madeira is lovely, beautiful place and very safe unlike Morocco.

Holidaytime2024 · 11/03/2024 17:14

I don't fancy Morocco to be honest.

Where have you enjoyed in Greece?

Lisbon. The nearby town of Caiscais is fab as a base to stay in with an easy train into the city: gorgeous beaches and nearby coastal walking, lovely town, very international, and a lot of English speakers as well - which helps if you just want to chill and not feel self conscious.

Will take all your budget, but Japan.
Very safe, walkable, lots to explore and experience, including great food.

Some English spoken (possibly too little for your requirements?), and is very safe and easy to navigate.

Morocco can be a bit of a challenge at the best of times. I wouldn't recommend it to a lone woman. It's worth a visit but isn't the kind of safe-feeling hassle-free place the OP is after, IMO.

I've been to agadir in Morocco 3 times as a 57 year old single woman and I love it. Not everyone's cup of tea but people are friendly and the food is good. Lovely sandy beach.

Budapest was lovely and their tram system was great and easy to use.

Edited

Just googled Caiscais and it looks so pretty.

Malaga is amazing and so safe. It has a great public transport network and you can easily take a train to Seville or Granada or Cordoba.

I'd love to go to Japan one day but I think I'd want longer than the week I have.

I'd go back to Granada in a heartbeat. It's not beachy, though. I loved Sicily - Taormina?

UneasyMe · 11/03/2024 17:18

Antibes - lovely town and can explore coast by train / mountains by bus

Dubrovnik

Athens plus an island, eg Hydra

VestPantsandSocks · 11/03/2024 17:18

New York or Boston?

Not one I'd considered as I assumed Málaga was for youngsters wanting clubbing. What did you like about it?

Malaga .

Absolutely fits the brief. I've just come back and felt totally safe

BurbageBrook · 11/03/2024 17:19

Definitely don't recommend Morocco. I've travelled solo lots and my top solo trips were Barcelona, Rome and Malaga.

i actually heard yesterday that Japan isn’t particularly safe for women on their own. I was surprised, and hopefully wrong!

TeenDivided · 11/03/2024 17:21

Jersey.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 11/03/2024 17:21

Also Sorrento or Amalfi. I would also avoid Turkey if you don't fancy Morocco.
OP - Rome is amazing. I didn't see any pickpockets or other trouble there. Athens is also fabulous. Great markets too.

ALunchbox · 11/03/2024 17:22

Venice?

I wouldn't go to Morocco

Jersey.

Not warm enough I don't think.
