Where would you go on holiday alone?

I have 7 days when my children are on holiday with their Dad. I want to go away. This will be in early June. I have between £600-£2000 to spend on flights and accomodation but would prefer to not be at the top end if possible. I'm in my 40s and not into nightlife but not massively into art galleries, museums etc either.

Essentials:
Warm or hot weather.
Beautiful buildings and/or beautiful scenery.
A safe place, not rife with pickpockets.

Would like:
Things to see and do e.g. cathedrals, maybe a beach, nice places to eat, maybe a castle or palace, maybe a pool, maybe a zoo.
A place where lots of people speak English as I'm travelling by myself.
A nice hotel.

I hate:
Barren landscapes
The Canary Islands (sorry if you love them).
Complex public transport, I'd rather an easy to walk/navigate place

Thanks for any ideas. I initially thought Rome but it's super expensive for the week I can go and pickpocketing seems high. I thought maybe Valencia but I haven't looked into that one much yet. I have been to Seville and loved it so maybe would like Valencia. I've considered Portugal but don't know where.

Greece for sure one of the little islands I love kefalonia its beautiful the ppl are lovely its safe too no one bothers you at all I wouldn't go to Turkey or Egypt alone

Ilovemyshed · 11/03/2024 18:51

Switzerland, up in the mountains from Interlaken - jungfrau region.

Ilovemyshed · 11/03/2024 18:53

Or Soller in Mallorca, lovely town, simple tram to the Port town. Great coffee culture, old buildings, walking into the Tramontena. Fly to Palma and take a simple train to the town.

TwylaSands · 11/03/2024 18:54

I would go to Gibraltar. Loads to see and do there.

Or a greek island.

Majorca - Palma or Soller would get my vote.

Agree. Palma plus Soller or Pollensa would be lovely. Malaga is also great though. Or I've always fancied a train across Northern Spain through the Costa Verde and all the foodie areas.

WhamFantastic · 11/03/2024 18:55

Lisbon!
So much to see.
Lovely food.
Beautiful weather. Beautiful city overall.
I did sightseeing solo (DH was working) and felt very safe.

Auntpodder · 11/03/2024 18:56

Apart from the guaranteed hot weather, I'd say Scandinavia would tick all your boxes - lots of English-speaking, very safe, great public transport and lovely long summer days. Stockholm and Copenhagen both have city beaches and proper beaches within easy reach (and fabulous museums) and as Northern Europeans totally get why someone would travel by themselves (it's not a Med mindset at all)...

legosnowqueen · 11/03/2024 18:59

Palma, Majorca is lovely

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 11/03/2024 19:00

Nice or Porto would be my thought.

Have a look at Padua (Padova) Italy. It's a gorgeous city/town in its own right, with reasonably priced accommodation, and lots of history and the Scrovegni frescoes are an absolute must see. The best bit is that it's only 30 minutes on a direct train to Venice. I loved the combo of a day trip to Venice (early start) and time in Padua. I felt very safe in both places, but you do have to be aware amongst the huge crowds in Venice.

From Padua you can also take a train to Bologna. Now that's one mad place with the best food I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Great vibe and lots to see also, but you could omit that if not keen.

I also agree with Malaga. Such a lovely city with everything you could want to see, eat, drink, shop, sunbathe in!

Enjoy wherever you go. Travelling solo is great, although I have yet to do Rome on my own, it's on the list!

Madeira is lovely, beautiful place and very safe unlike Morocco.

I second this and can recommend the Savoy Palace in Funchal. It's the most fab hotel and a short and safe walk to the centre of town and the old town.

Moier · 11/03/2024 19:05

I'd watch Jane Mcdonald.
She has loads of shows travelling alone ( well film crew there). Hotels/ places of interest ..in fact every thing you need to know.
Find her programmes on chanel 5.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 11/03/2024 19:05

Nice could fit the brief. Can't beat the coastline for scenery.
Great bus network east and west. Loads to see and do.

DanceMumTaxi · 11/03/2024 19:05

How about a cruise? Maybe a Med one that stops in a few places, so lots of things to see and do.

Madamqueenofeverything · 11/03/2024 19:08

I don’t blame you about the canaries tbh. Wouldn't do Paris either, transport seems very complicated

Pinkmagic1 · 11/03/2024 19:08

Another vote for Palma, Majorca. Lovely, walkable city, a bit like a smaller, friendlier Barcelona in my opinion. Plenty of gorgeous beaches nearby and easy to use public transport (bus and train) system to travel all over the island.

Tootingbec · 11/03/2024 19:10

I was going to suggest Caiscais in Portugal also. Train ride 30mins to Lisbon for a bit of city but then very relaxed in Caiscais with beach front hotels etc. Very walkable or Ubers plentiful and ludicrously cheap.

full of British ex pats (not in a bad way!) so plenty of English spoken.

Groovy48592747 · 11/03/2024 19:18

A Med or Greek cruise. Many cruises are solo traveller friendly.

Get to see many lovely places, you can venture out on your own or take an excursion.

KathieFerrars · 11/03/2024 19:21

Guernsey. Loads of walking, lovely scenery and easy as a solo traveller.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 11/03/2024 19:24

As i was reading your OP I was thinking Valencia. It's got everything you've listed. Easy metro journey from the airport to the centre of town. It's very walkable, has a historic centre, fabulous parks, a zoo, the beach, an aquarium, concert hall. Stay in the centre rather than near the City of Arts and Science. The Hotel Dimar on the Gran Via is one I see recommended on TripAdvisor. I used to live in Valencia and love the place.

sunnysays15717 · 11/03/2024 19:39

The south of France. Fly into nice and stay there and you can jump on the train for a few euros and visit Cannes, Antibes, eze ect! Beautiful places to see, easy to get around and a quick flight from the uk. Can't believe there are people recommending Morocco for a female travelling alone!

Annielou67 · 11/03/2024 19:42

My daughter is going to Bucharest on her own tomorrow.

IamaRevenant · 11/03/2024 19:45

I love Morocco but you will most likely get harassed (I used to live there so am used to it but it's defo not stress free!).

I also lived in Portugal and would strongly recommend Lisbon, Porto and Lagos - the latter is a bit of a trek from the airport but it's soooo gorgeous, amazing beaches and snorkeling and the town is beautiful.

In Dpain I would second/third Malaga and Barcelona.

Krakow and Prague are both amazing places, no beach but as PP suggested you could get a nice hotel with a pool for your budget.

One place that was a real surprise to me was Malta! We only went for a friend's wedding and honestly I was blown away. Valletta is just beautiful, with loads of history, lovely buildings and a lot of churches/cathedrals if that's your thing 😀

Lovely beaches and scenery, lots to do eg snorkeling, boat trips etc, easy to get around (they have hop on hop off buses that go all round the island and visit some lovely beaches as well as historical sites etc etc). Everyone speaks English, easy direct flights, no hassle, the food is to die for and the weather in June will be beautiful. We didn't stay in an upmarket hotel but ours was perfectly lovely and very cheap so I'm sure you could get a great deal. It's my go-to recommendation now as it's never the first place people think of!

UpsideLeft · 11/03/2024 19:45

I'd go to Palma or after reading about Malaga on here I'd go there

Tisfortired · 11/03/2024 19:46

Porto and Copenhagen have been my favourite city break destinations. Both have good food, plenty to see and feel safe.
