Do you know what a bishy barnabee is?

Was talking to my lovely friend today and said I had an influx of bishy barnabees. She looked at me like I was quite mad!

I didn’t realise it was such a local colloquialism! What’s your one that confuses everyone?

It’s a ladybird but I’m a Norfolk gal!

takemeawayagain · 09/03/2024 20:22

ShowOfHands · 09/03/2024 20:23

MixingPlaydough · 09/03/2024 20:24

Not a clue.

The ones I use which tend to throw people off are Bobbo, Tabs and Ginnel.

Greebosmum · 09/03/2024 20:25

Yep, but my parents were Norfolk born and bred.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 09/03/2024 20:25

I do but then I live just across the border and into Suffolk.

hexsnidgett · 09/03/2024 20:27

Yes, but I am from Norfolk Wink

Picklewicklepickle · 09/03/2024 20:29

I do but I moved to Norfolk 15 years ago! Although I don’t know anyone that says it seriously, only in jest.

RampantIvy · 09/03/2024 20:29

Not until I googled. It's an East Anglian ladybird.
I live in the county of ginnels and snickets.

Does anyone know what a slater is? Or a spelk?

MikeRafone · 09/03/2024 20:30

My dad was from north Suffolk and called them ishy bishy barnabees!

I remarked at work the other day that it was "siling down" and got a funny look. Is that a Lincolnshire-ism?

mathanxiety · 09/03/2024 20:57

Absolutely! I was raised in Norfolk so it’s what I call them. Our hibernating house bishies have been about too this week.

Barbaby was Bishop of Norwich and had a ladybird on his coat of arms.

I also jiffle, not fidget
And that picture over there’s on the huh

But I’m from a multicultural Jewish/ French Norfolk home so I done just mardle. I also kvetch and babille 🙂

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 09/03/2024 21:19

Yes, Norfolk born and bred here!
