Do you know what a bishy barnabee is?

Was talking to my lovely friend today and said I had an influx of bishy barnabees. She looked at me like I was quite mad!

I didn’t realise it was such a local colloquialism! What’s your one that confuses everyone?

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 09/03/2024 21:29

Yup. From Norfolk here too. They even have a street named after them.

JoeLovesGina · 09/03/2024 21:37

I've got a shiver in my finger.

CommeIlFaut · 09/03/2024 21:07

Absolutely! I was raised in Norfolk so it’s what I call them. Our hibernating house bishies have been about too this week.

Barbaby was Bishop of Norwich and had a ladybird on his coat of arms.

I also jiffle, not fidget
And that picture over there’s on the huh

But I’m from a multicultural Jewish/ French Norfolk home so I done just mardle. I also kvetch and babille 🙂

My MiL calls my DC jifflebums

It’s a ladybird but I’m a Norfolk gal!

Yep, but should be bishy bishy Barney bee. The second bishy is important.

Not a clue.

The ones I use which tend to throw people off are Bobbo, Tabs and Ginnel.

Babies bottle, cigarettes, narrow cut between houses or alleyway

Yep also know ginnel and spelk and my mum used to say haway when we needed to leave the house and say I was hacky after brownie camp; my dad would tell me to stop being mardy - Norfolk but with very Northern parents 😬

AngelinaFibres · 09/03/2024 22:28

Piffy on a rock bun.
Means something that's too small for where it is.
" That looks like a piffy on a rock bun".

" That looks like a piffy on a rock bun".

It means enforced standing about being useless- “I’m stood here like piffy on a rock bun” if something has caused you to wait (for example waiting for someone to take a brew from you.m)

Or sometimes used to mean left out- so you might say “stood here like piffy” if no one passes you the ball in a football game- you are hanging around doing nothing.

Birthdaycake369 · 09/03/2024 22:41

There’s an estate nearby that has a bishy barney bee drive and lots of the houses have ladybirds on. There’s also a polywiggle road which I’d never heard of despite living in Norfolk my whole life

citrinetrilogy · 09/03/2024 23:38

MikeRafone · 09/03/2024 20:30

Jolop

Ah. Isn't it jollop though, or is that something else?

Correct. Also in the land of daps, and a bit north of the babbers.

I am from Norfolk too but have lived all over the place.

Many years ago, when living in Surrey, I clocked that my son's music teacher was from Norfolk as well when she told him to stop 'jiffling about' 🙂

And I love you for 'on the huh'! My very favourite Norfolk expression by a mile.
