Dh has bacterial meningitis. Help

My dh was taken into hospital last night after three days of horrendous infection symptoms. They've since confirmed bacterial meningitis. His inflammation marks are at 290 (should be less than 5).
What on earth do I do? He's 36. I'm 28. We have two children who are 5 and 3 who keep asking where daddy is.

You’ve had a tough few weeks - have you been seen in a&e yet?

rainbowstardrops · 20/03/2024 07:35

So sorry to hear this! Blimey, that's all you need. Hope your little one is on the mend soon

INeedNewShoes · 20/03/2024 10:01

OP you can do this. I know it's appalling. I've been to hospital six times with DD in four months. Every single time I think 'I can't cope with doing this again' yet somehow I'm here.

The onus is on parents in a busy A&E department nowadays to look for signs of deterioration. If you think she's going downhill, tell the nurses.

My goodness, OP, you've been through the wringer lately.

Thank you. Online wait times are saying 11 hours in department. Would be ok if she would take the antibiotics orally but she won't, hence being here.

And it sucks doesn't it having to go to another city for kids to be seen?

OP reach out if you need anything

Hugs to you all

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. In all honesty we decided to bring dd home and monitor her closely at home. I asked the likelihood of them giving her different antibiotics or giving them another way to which the nurses said it was low and we would need to persevere so that's what we are doing. We've spoken to the gp today (I felt it would be better to get a gp appointment than wait 11 hours in a&e) and they've prescribed different antibiotics which can be given less frequently so may be less traumatic for her.
In the meantime dd has been spoilt with a new fluffy sheep today (because we definitely need more teddies in this house!).
I've got tonsillitis, can't remember my last proper meal and am seriously exhausted but plodding on because I have no other options. Dh is getting arsey at various things including dd not taking her meds and the way I'm trying to give them which is helpful.
I'm hoping kids will go to bed soon and I can have yet another bowl of cereal and just sit

How are you all doing @Eachpeachpears you've been through the mill.

Eachpeachpears · 07/04/2024 07:48

@justasking111 we are on the up, touch wood. Thank you for asking. DH pneumonia returned over Easter but swift antibiotics hit it straight away. After 4 weeks at home she is now back at work which has been good for his mental health.
DD is fully recovered as is DS which I'm so greatful for.
There appears to be rainbows after big storms as we were contacted yesterday by a dog rescue and we have reserved a lovely old boy so fingers crossed we will meet him today, if not Tuesday. So that's the excitement to follow the big valley we've been in!

I'm really glad that everyone has recovered and that you're getting a dog.
