Dh has bacterial meningitis. Help

Eachpeachpears · 09/03/2024 05:18

My dh was taken into hospital last night after three days of horrendous infection symptoms. They've since confirmed bacterial meningitis. His inflammation marks are at 290 (should be less than 5).
What on earth do I do? He's 36. I'm 28. We have two children who are 5 and 3 who keep asking where daddy is.

That's nice isn't it. Clearly not enough support irl so you turn to online and people doubt you 🙄
Anyway, dh is no where near well, he's up one minute, down the next. No temp though, I'm checking it religiously.
He'll be mid conversation one minute and the next hea fast asleep. His body is clearly exhausted.
He's just had toast, first thing to eat in nearly a week so that's amazing.
He's remembered mothers Day and got his sister to do the cards with the kids (which he'd already bought a week ago! Thankfully it was all in a bag in the car so when I got to sil yesterday, bil took the car keys when I wasn't looking!)
Ds has swimming this morning so I'll take both kids there so dh can get some proper rest.
I suffer from Chronic pain and fatigue syndrome though so I'm starting to flag a bit... Not a lot I can do about that. I'll be glad when dc are safe in school tomorrow and I can have a bit of a rest!
Thank you for all your kind words

It wasn't doubting you. When I was in they said it was a standard 2w course of IV antibiotics.

bradpittsbathwater · 11/03/2024 07:43

If you don't want to go to a&e can you call 111 or a Gp?

familyissues12345 · 11/03/2024 12:16

How's he doing now @Eachpeachpears ?

Don't fret about the children watching too much tv at the moment, sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do!

My DD had Bacterial meningitis.

Her CRP was 270.

She was in hospital for 5 days on antibiotics then 5 days as an outpatient for the rest of her course.

She was 2 at the time, it was terrifying.

She is now perfect, no lasting effects apart from me being traumatized.

Your DH is in the best place, be aware we saw no improvement until day 4 of the antibiotics when all of a sudden she improved very quickly.

Eachpeachpears · 10/03/2024 11:40

Thanks for your help all I'm going to call them shortly, there's a number on the discharge paperwork. @HotChocWine I think we do 🤣 local hospital will be overrun come Tuesday

They have started to arrive....

Hope your DH has had a better last 24 hours

Eachpeachpears · 11/03/2024 18:27

Thank you for your thoughts and well wishes. He's better in some ways and worse in others. His thirst has improved but he's spent all day sleeping today which I guess is expected. He's become very swollen around the face, I'm presuming from the steroids.
I've managed to get some anti sickness meds from the gp and a sick note for 2 weeks so at least that's covered.
It's going to be a slow process. He's most gutted about our tattoo date day we had planned for next week to mark our anniversary... 8 years married.
I'll still be having my tattoo done though, his dad's coming to look after him while I'm gone, I'll need the alone time by then lol

How is your DH today @Eachpeachpears ? It sounds as if he was discharged too early. I'd try phoning the number you were given again if you are concerned and if they say go to A and E, ask why you were given this number!!

Eachpeachpears · 12/03/2024 12:33

@christmascalypso thank you so much for asking. He's made a huge improvement today which is so fantastic. He's still exhausted but the swelling has reduced. Managed to get anti sickness tablets from the go which has helped although he's struggling with other side effects from the antibiotics. But he's eating and drinking and holding conversation which is so positive. He was definitely discharged too early. But so pleased he seems brighter today. I think it will be a two steps forward, one step back situation this week but I'll take it

I’ve only seen this tread today. I’m glad he is improving.

NorthCliffs · 12/03/2024 12:43

I walked into hospital with a CRP level of 448. All the antibiotics and a defunct kidney removal later I walked back out. Glad he's improving, OP. I didn't realise how scary a time it was for my husband. Take care of yourself x

mitogoshi · 12/03/2024 12:46

Glad he's improving. Early discharge is the norm now, most people prefer it - bit is quite alarming all the same! I'm guessing you are fairly close to me though we are next city down

Glad he is improving . What a worry for you all. Can't believe he was discharged so soon though!

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 12/03/2024 16:04

My dad took a long time to get strength back so do make sure he keeps resting and takes it slow. Glad things are going well for him.

trampoline123 · 12/03/2024 16:13

Glad he's feeling brighter. It took me a few months to recover properly and some days will be better than others.

Eachpeachpears · 12/03/2024 18:07

I'm obviously so delighted that dh is feeling brighter but my gosh I'm exhausted. Parenting 2 children under 5 through this has been incredibly tough. With all the worry and caring for dh too .. I've honestly felt sick with exhaustion at times. As I mentioned up thread I suffer from Chronic pain and fatigue syndrome which I've obviously not been able to take care of and it's starting to show. I think I yawned on every page of tabby mctatt while reading to my daughter before bed. I went out today to get dh some vitamins and things to help and while I was out I treated myself to some new pj's to cheer me up. My favorite pass time is to crochet with a podcast on... I don't have the energy to crochet but I might lie in a dark room with today's release of my podcast just to take a breath for myself. But first, bedtime x2, already fed Everyone, school reading done (why are those books so bloody boring, while we are on the subject?!), washing up done, tidying done. Might have also bought ds new polo shirts for school today because lefts face it my washing pile is the size of my house! Thank you for all being there for me to vent to!

I am so glad your DH is on the mend, but you must be exhausted.

Eachpeachpears · 13/03/2024 18:34

Managed to get dh out of the house today for a bit if fresh air. He came on the school run (500m down the road) and the kids were so overjoyed to see him. He overdid it, obviously, as has returned to his bed and slept ever since but I think the fresh air did him the world of good. Don't know what you can do until you try I guess. Such a positive day today. I'm expecting him to flag again tomorrow but we'll face that when we get there.
Thank you so much to those on this thread for being there to listen and respond over the last week. It is so much appreciated

owlsinthedaylight · 13/03/2024 20:16

How are you feeling yourself @Eachpeachpears ? Are you starting to recover too? Make sure you get some time to take care of yourself.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 13/03/2024 20:22

Glad he is doing well. Just wanted to say providing he is improving every day I wouldn't worry about the tiredness. I've had viral meningitis (not the same, I know) twice, and both times I was utterly exhausted. Fighting the infection is a huge drain on your body, especially when you have nothing in reserve. I had two weeks off work minimum each time and slept hours each day so I would expect this to be amplified for your husband. Fingers crossed he gets better each day.

Eachpeachpears · 14/03/2024 05:42

@owlsinthedaylight thank you for asking. I'm ok. I'm exhausted and fed up if I'm honest. It's not a small task. The things id usually do with dd through the week are cancelled because it's impossible to move around the town during this sporting event so I'm trying to entertain her as best I can while also allowing dh space a d time to rest. It's hard. But I'm ok. I'll survive

And I'm back, sitting in a&e with dd who has suspected strep pneumonia.
Took dd to the gp yesterday who gave her antibiotics but she won't take them. Temp skyrocketed to 40 degrees at 2am so here we are. I can't do this again. She has strep pneumonia 2 years ago which became sepsis.
Shes only 3

Oh op I'm so sorry.

You have had way too much on your plate already. 😢

I hope your DD feels better soon.

Big hug. 💐

flapjackfairy · 20/03/2024 05:44

oh I am so sorry. it sounds v tough indeed. Hope your dd feels better soon x

Eachpeachpears · 20/03/2024 05:51

Thank you. Online wait times are saying 11 hours in department. Would be ok if she would take the antibiotics orally but she won't, hence being here.
