Do You Do Much For Easter?

According to the tv & magazine ads we should all be inviting half the neighbourhood round for a roast lamb lunch, decorating the house, having bonnet parades & egg hunts, eating vast quantities of chocolate etc etc. I do like Easter but it’s pretty lowkey for us. Luckily I’m only working on the Sat out of the whole long weekend. Have bought a big fruit & nut egg for DF. DM isn’t really a fan of chocolate so I’ll buy her a plant or some flowers. DH prefers a bar to an egg & DD15 asks for money. We don’t usually decorate although I have my eye on some very cute string lights with bunnies & carrots. DH doesn’t particularly like lamb but we might have a Sunday roast, probably chicken or pork. DD will be at her GF’s & no doubt will ask to stay on for Easter Sunday. Weather permitting, we might have a day out on Easter Monday.

Fish and parsley sauce dinner the Friday.. Eggs given also.
Went on holiday last Easter Saturday and dh set up egg hunt for the Sunday morning.. Not away this year sadly.. Probably eat copious chocolate to mourn that fact...

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/03/2024 17:08

Egg hunt when kids were little now we just give eggs.

Roast lamb on the Sunday with family.

afaloren · 08/03/2024 17:15

We have a family dinner with DM, PIL and anyone else who wants to come on the Sunday. MIL is Catholic and it’s important to her to celebrate so she goes to church first then bemoans the rest of us heathens tucking into the chocolate Grin

I'm religious,( C of E) so I won't eat meat on Good Friday .. Church Sunday. Visit Grandkids with eggs.. all have a Sunday roast.

AlltheFs · 08/03/2024 17:18

We did sod all until DD born.

We do an egg hunt for her with some decorations up and we have my family over for a roast. But it coincides with my birthday this year so will be a double event.

We don’t go mad though, a few adult eggs but mostly just a bit of fun for a 4 year old.

RabbitsRock · 08/03/2024 17:25

Forgot myself - I’ll definitely have an egg! Probably mini eggs or maybe a Lindt one. And forgot about fish on Good Friday. I have salmon tails in the freezer.

Growing up, we just went to church and had a roast, but then I started staying with a friend for Easter and discovered how it should be celebrated! The Catholics go to mass while the lapsed ones stay home; we all dye eggs for the table using red cabbage and onion leaves, have an Easter egg hunt (we are all adults), and have a massive roast. Then a walk, board games and everyone stays over the night. It’s just the most gorgeous day!

mylittkeitalianhome · 08/03/2024 17:27

Also growing up, my mum would also bring us hot cross buns in bed on Good Friday while singing the hot cross bun nursery rhyme! Oh, and we’d have homemade simnel cake of course.

dancinginthewind · 08/03/2024 17:28

I've always worked in office jobs which close for the weekend and public holidays so have always done something for Easter simply because it was four days off work and the chance to go away for a night or two, whether on holiday or visiting family or friends. And I love chocolate and baking so Easter is a perfect excuse to eat more of both!

Borborygmus · 08/03/2024 18:03

We ignore it.

Maudeslittleredshoes · 08/03/2024 18:05

I eat too many Easter eggs, starting from when they first appear in the shops. I’ve just eaten one today. I buy our son and my step son and their partners an egg and choc treats along with my friend’s little one.

Ponderingwindow · 08/03/2024 18:07

We do an egg hunt at home and dye Easter eggs. That is because they are fun spring activities for children. I don’t bother with anything else. Easter isn’t a secular enough of a holiday for me to actually celebrate.

CeeJay81 · 08/03/2024 18:08

Nothing apart from eating easter eggs and the usual Sunday roast. No local family, so just the 4 of us as usual.

FountainofTruth · 08/03/2024 18:25

It's a busy time for me, I'm a Christian. I've booked from Maundy Thursday to the Monday as holiday. Church Thursday and charity donations (food shop for the food bank), Friday following the Cross through the village then service, Sunday Church then have family round for roast and finally a creame egg or 3.

When DC were little we’d go to mass then my DM would do an egg hunt in her garden and we’d have a roast at either of our houses. These days DC are grown up so we give them eggs and if they’re about we’ll do dinner. Otherwise we’ll do some gardening and enjoy the long weekend. I no longer practise Catholicism.

43ontherocksporfavor · 08/03/2024 18:30

@Maudeslittleredshoes can’t believe you eat Easter eggs before Easter Sunday! I guess some Catholicism is left in me.😂Mind you DH is a heathen and he’d never do that either.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 08/03/2024 18:32

I like Easter for the bank holidays.
I try and fit a city break in .

ErrolTheDragon · 08/03/2024 18:33

No. Hopefully I'll get some gardening done which seems an appropriate way to celebrate the spring goddess Ä’ostre after whom the holiday is named.Grin

My company doesn't care which days I take for the public holidays (the rest of my team is in the US) so I'll take the following Thursday and Friday off instead this year

AuntieMarys · 08/03/2024 18:34

I never have. Dcs got eggs on Good Friday! Never do lamb, eat hot x buns or simnel cake. Just another weekend to me!

MythicBish · 08/03/2024 18:34

Staying at PIL house as dh has the time off (bank holiday etc) and they live on the coast and obviously dc are off from school.

we will probably have a day hanging out at the beach (as long as it’s not pouring all day) and doing a cliff walk. If it’s a wash out maybe swimming or soft play.

Then have sausage roast dinner in the evening at normal dinner time (quicker than cooking other meats and dc will happily eat them) or if we’re feeling particularly lazy then takeaway fish and chips.

dc will get small presents rather than chocolate from us. Dc2 has a dairy/soy allergy and free from chocolate sometimes upsets his stomach anyway, so we’re trying to move away from chocolate. (Although I’m sure they will both get at least one egg from one family member)
We’ve got them new bedding (themed to their interests so more exciting than plain) some second hand books and some cheap garden toys. Might set up a mini treasure hunt thing with clues for them as they love that sort of thing.

stargirl1701 · 08/03/2024 18:37

Bake hot cross buns on Good Friday.

Dye eggs on Saturday.

Church followed by Sunday lunch with grandparents and an egg hunt in the garden. Easter egg and book for DC. Grandparents and godparents also give DCs an egg.

Nice walk (NT property) on Monday followed by a family film in the afternoon.

LaChienneDesFromages · 08/03/2024 18:37

Yes. It’s one of my favourite times of the year. I struggle with winter and love marking the coming of Spring.
We have an Easter tree (with decorations bought for my parents by their Dutch friends in the eighties) and lots of spring flowers in the house.
The garden is looking lovely by then so there’s normally outdoor eating, often wrapped up warm.
No meat on Good Friday here.
This year we will have a big Easter Saturday lunch with friends we rarely see and an early egg hunt for kids and teens.
DD sings in church choir so we go to the Easter Sunday service then drive down to MILS for the paschal lamb, egg hint, spring flower spotting pilgrimage in Regents’ Park.
On Easter Monday we are heading to Norfolk to see friends visiting from overseas for a big all-weather braai. Maybe a third Easter egg hunt?

43ontherocksporfavor · 08/03/2024 18:45

Can’t stand lamb anyway and seems such a weird thing to eat when celebrating spring, a dead spring baby! Lovely! 😟

Lovemusic82 · 08/03/2024 19:01

We kind of ignore it other than having an Easter egg each.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 08/03/2024 19:04

I love the long Easter weekend. There's no pressure unlike Christmas and you can do whatever you lik. We will be at home and will probably get family over Easter Friday for a roast and Easter egg hunt - the teens still like a good egg hunt in the garden. We're not religious so will eat them there and then Grin
