Poop who like to sleep with windows open...

...do you not get insects and wasps coming in? And how do you put up with that?

I've never slept with windows open at night myself but on the occasions that they ARE open, most evenings will inevitably produce at least one angry wasp in the summer and other general midges, bugs and bluebottles (aarg!) are even more regular. Once when I forgot to shut my window at night, an enormous hornet came in and woke me by buzzing angrily around my face, the result was very stressful.

Do you have a can of RAID in your bedside drawer? Grin

EDIT, ok, apologies for the title error, (people not poop!)i don't know whether to laugh or cry!

Yes, flies and insects come in. They're just naturally attracted to my shitty scent. 💩

KimMG · 08/03/2024 16:44

We have 2 windows in our bedroom open every night to provide a 'flowthrough' of air - had a flying visitor maybe twice in more than 30 years. Curtains remain closed, so it's likely that any visitors will just buzz off back out of the window.

Droolylabradors · 08/03/2024 16:46

They fly in and they fly out.

We have an old house windows on different levels and all four side of the house and Big windows.

In the summer heatwaves we get a lovely through breeze at night and the house cools right down.

We also get bats occasionally and birds fly in and usually fly out again.

ILoveSalmonSpread · 08/03/2024 16:47

Windows wide open 24/7 unless going out.
We rarely experience little beasties.

VenusClapTrap · 08/03/2024 16:49

Mine are open most of the time. Except in September (spider month). Rarely get wasps coming in. Flies yes, a bit.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 08/03/2024 16:50

A couple of years ago when it was really hot in london. We bought some fine net curtain material and tapped it on the frame of window we opened - as well as the 2nd one in the other room to flow through aire it did the trick. Be carfule the type of tape you use as some are very sticky but you need it to stay up - possibly clean the windows white white spirt, we did our grames are whihte on the insde and it did not harm them but you need to check - and we had the fan going on the ladinf

We have a poetable air con unit but we could not be arse to move it upstairs - the net did the trick

OkayKinkade · 08/03/2024 16:51

Bug nets. Very straightforward.

avocadotofu · 08/03/2024 16:52

Our bedroom window are always open and others are open lots and we don't really get flies etc.

Westfacing · 08/03/2024 16:54

Window in my bedroom is open a couple of inches 24/7 all year round, London.

Can't say I've noticed bugs and midges - the odd spider now and then but they would get in anyway!

NCForQuestions · 08/03/2024 16:57

I have blinds then curtains on the bedroom window so no bugs in the night that I've ever noticed!

I do, however have a plug in mozzie killer lamp in the hallway for half the year because I'm allergic to their bites.

We only get flies and wasps coming in the ground floor patio doors really, so I'm looking at the old fashioned bead doors for that this year as it's wearing.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/03/2024 16:59

do you not get insects and wasps coming in? And how do you put up with that?

Very rarely. And usually I don't notice, because I'm asleep.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/03/2024 17:01

Just buy a white net screen and it's sorted.

Far less exciting than the previous system, which was relying upon the Feline Early Warning System - a cat battering the crap out of one's pillow at 3am does tend to wake one up a bit more than one would like. Useful for getting you up just before the alarm on summer mornings, though.

Longtaileddormouse · 08/03/2024 18:45

Flyscreens. Life changing as keep out the flies, bees, wasps and (shudder) hornets.

HappierTimesAhead · 08/03/2024 18:47

I would like to have one open during the night but the sound of the seagulls early morning drives me mad.

Caspianberg · 08/03/2024 18:50

We added roller mosquito nets. In summer we only leave the windows with the nets on open at night. They were a bit of a faff to fit, but really cheap as we bought cut to size at home ( they are aluminium frames so sawed down). Only about €40 each, and we have on 4 windows now

Playingchesswithpigeons · 08/03/2024 18:52

Our bedroom window open around 350 days per year, apart from exceptionally cold nights. Occasional flies !
Daughter WON'T open her window, because she's petrified of flies!
We bought a strip of bug net from Amazon, that's fits the window and is fastened by the double sided tape provided. Been on a couple of years now. Just covers the upper part of window that opens and secured just below the hinge/opening. Works perfectly. Cost approx £5.

NO FLIES/INSECTS whatsoever can pass, window can open for a breeze. Happy daughter!

mathanxiety · 08/03/2024 18:56

I live in the US where we have mesh screens to keep the bugs, squirrels, raccoons, and so on out if you leave your window open. Tis bliss on a warm night.

Killerqueenie · 08/03/2024 18:57

I'm the same as you OP. I very rarely leave windows open unless it's REALLY hot as I'm petrified of wasps, moths, daddy long legs and any insect that flies really. My husband gets so frustrated as he likes the windows open in summer. Last summer we had a wasps nest directly above our bedroom window under the roof slates. We tried to get rid of it a couple of times without success. My husband isn't scared of wasps but even he was a bit hesitant then to leave the window open with the amount that were flying around.

kitsuneghost · 08/03/2024 18:59

We only seem to get moths at night
Don't think flies and wasps are active at night (or at least not attracted inside)

DewinDwl · 08/03/2024 18:59

I'd love to have the windows open overnight all year round but DH really feels the cold. When I do open them we do get a fair amount of bugs - flies, mosquitoes, crane flies, daddy long legs, wasps, bees etc. Have had hornets a couple of times -MIL had a small bat fly into her bedroom once 🙈

DewinDwl · 08/03/2024 19:00

Also moths and spiders. I hate bugs!

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 08/03/2024 19:00

I sleep with the window open year round. I make sure to turn the lights off before I open the window in the summer, otherwise moths and whatnot are straight in. Insects don't really want to be in houses, as far as I can tell. That's why they're always buzzing against the windows if they are in - they are trying to get out. It's really not an issue.

There was however the memorable occasion when I was standing in the kitchen one summer, when it was barely dusk, and a bat flitted past me 😬

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 08/03/2024 19:00

I always sleep with the windows open slightly, otherwise I would feel too stuffy.

But I have double glazed windows, with a 'night vent' option, which means I can open them about a centimetre to let air in, and lock them in place. I haven't noticed any bugs getting in...

IsawwhatIsaw · 08/03/2024 19:03

I like a window open virtually all year. If very cold maybe only an inch or so.
I turn light off then open window. Occasional insects , but not a big problem

Theinjuredcleaner · 08/03/2024 19:04

I don't mind bugs but am terrified of human intruders! I live in a ground floor flat in a dodgy area so could never sleep with windows cracked even an inch. I've probably consumed far too many true crime podcasts.
