Poop who like to sleep with windows open...

HelloShupa · 08/03/2024 16:40

...do you not get insects and wasps coming in? And how do you put up with that?

I've never slept with windows open at night myself but on the occasions that they ARE open, most evenings will inevitably produce at least one angry wasp in the summer and other general midges, bugs and bluebottles (aarg!) are even more regular. Once when I forgot to shut my window at night, an enormous hornet came in and woke me by buzzing angrily around my face, the result was very stressful.

Do you have a can of RAID in your bedside drawer? Grin

EDIT, ok, apologies for the title error, (people not poop!)i don't know whether to laugh or cry!

Keeping them closed till you turn the lights off usually works for us. Otherwise moths tend to come in. Not much else does though.

BoohooWoohoo · 08/03/2024 19:05

I have a street lamp outside by bedroom and there’s always big moths attached to them in the warmer months so I don’t sleep with that window open.

I have big nets on my kids windows. I can handle spiders but not flying insects like wasps

JaninaDuszejko · 08/03/2024 19:10

Where do you live? Think this is only really a problem when it's hot and still, as soon as there is a breeze it's not an issue. Also, curtains stop most of them coming too far into the room. We have mason bees living in the eaves just outside our bedroom window and we've never had one come into our room. However we regularly get insects coming into our dining room extension through the velux windows in the roof. No curtains to stop them.

Wizzadorra70 · 08/03/2024 19:12

Always have ensuite bathroom window wide open, and usually one window in the actual bedroom. It's the moths I'm not keen on so never leave a light on in the evening in summer. We had great fun last summer when DH went up and got pelted into by a bat flying round in circles... it shat everywhere and the dogs were frantically trying to assist. Thankfully it found it's way out again!

Caswallonthefox · 08/03/2024 19:12

I have sash windows that are open during the summer. I have net curtains. The most I've had is a pigeon landing on the edge trying to get away from another rather amorous one.
Any flies that come in my kitchen are eaten by my resident false widow spider.
If I don't have my windows open I'd overheat.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 08/03/2024 19:14

I absolutely cannot sleep with the windows closed - too stuffy and claustrophobic. Hate staying in a hotel where you can't open the window. Like a pp, I close the curtains before I put the light on. Rarely have a problem with insects, just the odd mozzie but that's rare. The only problem with the open window is a cold head in the middle of the night if it's really cold so I reach out and grab a t-shirt and drape that over sexy. Thankfully DH doesn't know about this because I remove it before he gets up :)

I don't mind bugs but am terrified of human intruders! I live in a ground floor flat in a dodgy area so could never sleep with windows cracked even an inch. I've probably consumed far too many true crime podcasts.

I used to live on a ground floor flat and it made me nervous too. Even though it was a good area.

TorroFerney · 08/03/2024 19:24

Not wasps but I assume they come in and I assume fly in our mouths and we inadvertently eat them.

Floralnomad · 08/03/2024 19:26

We have fly/ midge roller screens on all of our windows , last year we didn’t have a single insect get through our defences .

muddyford · 08/03/2024 19:29

Hardly ever as most insects aren't nightfliers. And I am severely moth-phobic

BoobyDazzler · 08/03/2024 19:30

I get woken up by a bumble bee trying to get back out of my bedroom window and banging about at least every other day in the summer.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 08/03/2024 19:35

I've just been up to our (loft) bedroom and it's pretty chilly up there with the window open but I said to DH that I can't wait to get into bed with my duvet and fur blanket and the window open!

But in the summer in can be light from 4:30am to almost 11pm. I too have been woken up by curious bumblebees and wasps.

Redglitter · 08/03/2024 19:42

My windows are open all year round & I could literally count on one hand the times something has come in. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages

mynewusername2023 · 08/03/2024 19:50

Pretty much have our bedroom window open all year round. We have blinds that stay down all the time (instead of net curtains) and then curtains as well. Rarely have any bugs at all.

Compash · 08/03/2024 19:51

Nah, just damned vampires... 🧛🏻‍♂️

But don't worry, the smell of the poop puts them off... 💩

(Sorry, but thank you for the laugh! 🤣)

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/03/2024 20:07

I have mine open every night. I get a blocked nose and headache otherwise. The only critter is the humble ladybird! But weird I get 3 or 4 at once

I live in the US where we have mesh screens to keep the bugs, squirrels, raccoons, and so on out if you leave your window open. Tis bliss on a warm night.

I always wonder why this isn't a thing in the UK.
I wish it was!

This is what we have , lots of companies do them . We got ours from New Blinds .

Mouldyfoodhelp · 08/03/2024 20:55

I feel like the cold is a bigger factor for me rather than insects

BreakfastAtMilliways · 08/03/2024 21:00

I did wonder what part of the world the OP is from. In the UK it’s barely springtime and open windows at night won’t be a thing for a couple of months at least. 🥶

mommatoone · 08/03/2024 21:08

I leave my window open all year round. I find it too stuffy if not! Plus, I'd settle for bugs compared to what my bloody cat brings in!🤣

TheBackingSinger · 08/03/2024 21:12

I don’t mind the odd fly but last year there was a bees nest just outside the window so I got this. You can hardly see it and nothing gets in

A lot of US windows are sash style, and you basically have a double window, the interior one that you can raise and lower, plus the outer one, which consists of two storm window panes and the screen, in three separate tracks.

This gives an idea of the older style window with storm panes and a screen (I have these in my apartment).
MrsMitford3 · 08/03/2024 21:18

We are very much a windows open family.
Bedroom window open every day year round-just how open is weather dependant.
I live in a Victorian house which is a spider magnet. I don't mind them-not so keen on moths but have a very live and let live attitude.

Bifold doors at the back open every day weather permitting and back door often left open/ajar for cat and dog.
Inevitably there are the occasional bugs etc but the pros far outweigh the cons for me. I like fresh air!!
