New Driver - Can’t get insurance for less than £250 p/m

I passed! I’m over the moon! But…. Just been checking the comparison sites and I can’t get insurance for less than £250 per month!

I’ve even tried black box insurance but it’s the same. Can I lower this somehow??

Do you have anyone you can add on as a named driver? My son added me and my husband to his (quite reasonably, he lives with us and we sometimes borrow his car for tip runs 😆) which brought the premium down. It came down even more when he added my mum as a named driver as well.

iloveshetlandponies · 08/03/2024 15:47

Congratulations 🙌🏻

How old are you ?

My 17 year old boy passed the other week and his insurance is £230 a month it's the cheapest we could find

He is with Veygo

iloveshetlandponies · 08/03/2024 15:48

If you're older than 17/18 I'm sure you'll find cheaper than that though !

It really is scandalous

Henowner · 08/03/2024 15:50

Get your insurance a few weeks after you pass - brought my son's down by £2k. He got it for £1.8k through Quote Me Happy

TeenDivided · 08/03/2024 15:50

What car? That will make a massive difference.

Kwasi · 10/03/2024 18:16

Take your time and check directly with insurance companies. I used Meerkat for a house insurance comparison and it came out at £870 for the year! I got it through Nationwide in the end for £350.

If you can, add another driver. It will massively help.

Change the date you want your policy to start. It’s always more expensive if you want it next week.

What car are you trying to insure? What insurance category is it in? Anything over 1.2 litre will put the price up.

CormorantStrikesBack · 10/03/2024 18:23

What insurance category is the car?

BlueYazoo · 10/03/2024 18:26

The make and model will have a big impact as statistically the most popular ones are on the road more and therefore more likely to be involved in claims. Claims inflation is in double figures (not far off 20%) and the cost is passed on to the consumer. Parts are costing more and harder to source, labour charges are increasing, long lead times on new vehicles, hire charges etc. I’m a motor insurance underwriter and it’s an extremely tough market to be in at the moment.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 18:27

why is 250 a problem?

tempnameforadvice · 10/03/2024 18:30

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator per month.........

StringUnravelled · 10/03/2024 18:31

@Bunbum Find a lower insurance category car for a start. Lots of "boy racer" cars like a Ford Fiesta will cost you more than say a Toyota Aygo or Hyundai i10. Also larger cars Renault Captur and Seat Arona.

Name another driver on the car as well as this reduces the risk instead of just you driving it. At the moment you are an unknown risk to an insurance company so your first year is always going to be high.

The sweet spot for getting insurance is around 20-21 days before you need it. Run those dates too.

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator that is my entire car insurance for a year on a brand new car. I have protected no claims and have been driving a long time. £3k for a newly passed driver is too much to pay, you can get cheaper depending on the car.

why is 250 a problem?

£3000 a year is loads!

storagefilter · 10/03/2024 18:32

It may be the car OP. What have you got?

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 10/03/2024 18:32

tempnameforadvice · 10/03/2024 18:30

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator per month.........

Thanks, I did see that and I assumed he/she was in London, a not so nice part of london/mnchester/bradford/liverpool/nevewcastle/brum/surrey/etc/etc and the car they were looking at was possibly a newish fiesta - so 4k a year is very reasonable.

CouldBeOuting · 10/03/2024 18:36

My DD just passed her test. Her insurance with me and DH as additional drivers is around 800 for a YEAR! That’s with a good well known insurer. Would be cheaper with some company none if us had heard of so avoided.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/03/2024 18:40

It will depend on lots of things - where you live, where you park, what kind of car, how many people are on the insurance…

£250 a month is insane. It’s about £800 for both DH and I on two cars for a full year. Not new drivers though although DH does have an accident in the last 5 years. 🙄

Fizzbiltz · 10/03/2024 19:23

Ring companies direct, add named drivers. Direct line were reasonable.

WeeOrcadian · 10/03/2024 20:36

How old are you OP? What car is this?

fionamadcat · 10/03/2024 20:46

Try waiting a couple of weeks. When I’ve tried getting quotes for my kids on the day they passed their tests it’s always extortionate but comes down a few weeks later. Adding named drivers as well, daughter has both me and dh. We haven’t found the size of engine has mattered too much, she’s had a 1.5 and a 1.6 (both diesel) since she’s passed her test and it’s been £900 a year at most.

Whhhhhhaaaaa? How is £4k reasonable fir insurance? Who pays that? Ds2's was just under £1k last year, this year (so with a tears NCB) I have quotes for £750 or £500 with a black box.

I dont see how that is possible as i have been driving for years and years, the cheapest mine is costing me is 500. And i am not young.

SneakySnakeEx · 10/03/2024 20:54

What car are you trying to insure.
Under a 1.2l will be cheaper to insure. Adding other drivers often helps.

My friend passed in her 30s. A little vw up. And was getting quotes around 2k mark. Cheapest she could get it down to was 1.7k.
Yet my NDN 21 year old pays same for a 1.6 turbo.
Live in same street so location isn't the issue

MaloneMeadow · 10/03/2024 20:55

Following! My 19 year old DD passed in December and so far we’ve been unable to get a quote for less than £600 per month - it’s scandalous!!

The vast majority of teens at the minute! It seems like you’ve struck gold with a quote that low for your DS
