We have a workman coming to do 4 days of plastering. What would you expect to pay per day

We pay £250 a day in the NW, but he’s very good (and fast). How many rooms is he doing in four days?

bigfkuffyblanketwithjam · 07/03/2024 11:39

It's a kitchen/ diner area and utility apparently there will be 4 of them here for 4 days and I'm a bit stressed. We had a kitchen ripped out and basically this needs done ( extra unforeseen work) so our contractor is organising it but I'm stressing about the cost

Unless you live in a mansion it should not be 16 day’s work for an area that size. A decent plasterer will do one standard sized room a day, alone. I’d get some more quotes if I were you.

That's what's weird. When I left this morning there was 2 there. I really thought he said there were 2 more coming but yes I agree it seem like a lot of labour for a kitchen diner

DeedlessIndeed · 07/03/2024 11:52

Plastering costs have gone through the roof!
In 2020 we had a couple of 4.5m x 4m rooms plastered for £350 per room.

Same size room downstairs was replastered at the end of 2023 - £900 :( And that wasn't the most expensive quote we had.

mindutopia · 07/03/2024 11:53

We are having lime rendering done, which I would assume is not what you are doing in your kitchen, more traditional plastering, but he charges by the square metre.

They absolutely should have given you a quote in advance, unless you aren't paying for it and it's coming out of what you have already paid the contractor for the full job.

Our lime guy said £250 per square metre for internal lime rendering, but he was very clear from the first visit about his rates. Surely you ask your contractor?

N0Tfunny · 07/03/2024 11:53

I agree that’s not 16 days work. Though I’m not sure it’s a room per day, as they have to do a coat and then come back another day to do the next.

So 4 men doesn’t seem like a good use of labour TBH and 4 men for 4 days is crazy .

It’s hard to know the right price without knowing the area - how many square meters is it roughly? Are they plastering over new brick, skimming over artex or plasterboard? Is it patching ?

Remember to allow for materials as well.

Mazuslongtoenail · 07/03/2024 11:53

You need to know a cost before work starts!

bigfkuffyblanketwithjam · 07/03/2024 11:56

We are in the middle of getting kitchen put in and this was only discovered after the work had started so in order to keep things moving we just let the contractor organise it. We have been quoted plastering as part of the original job but it all needs redone including ceiling

OP posts:
PoochiesPinkEars · 07/03/2024 11:57

My (specialist) plasterer in NW is £225 p/day.
That's labour only.

bigfkuffyblanketwithjam · 07/03/2024 12:03

I'm worried it's gonna be about 7k over budget

OP posts:
TwistedSisters · 07/03/2024 12:03

Yeah we have a decent plasterer who charges us £180/day, labour only, but that is 'mates rates' -- I think his actual day rate is about 250.

How big is your kitchen diner? We had a 72sqm extension done a year ago and the plastering took a week if I remember rightly (for one guy, apart from one day where there were 2 of them doing the ceiling).

Ilovemyshed · 07/03/2024 12:04

Just had a 3x3 m bathroom and a 5x7 m bedroom, walls and ceilings done £1500, 2.5 days, 2 men.

Ilovemyshed · 07/03/2024 12:05

Labour only. Have provided tape, beading and multi finish ourselves, c £250/300 materials.

nc42day · 07/03/2024 12:08

My plasterer can do an average size room easily in a day, and he's £250. That's not 16 days work.

bigfkuffyblanketwithjam · 07/03/2024 12:10

Just to explain... it's utility , kitchen, dinning room (which has been made open plan) the ceilings and all walls need done. It's a big area not sure exactly of size but it's decent.

OP posts:
bigfkuffyblanketwithjam · 07/03/2024 12:13

Actually ceilings would be included in the original quote. So that won't be extra

OP posts:
ChickpeaPie · 07/03/2024 12:13

We were quoted £2500 for two walls of insulated lime plaster

I don't think k it's lime plaster we are getting

Are you paying for the job, or per day? I'm in Hampshire and would expect £250 per day. I'd expect yours to be a day, maybe 2 for drying time.

As a guide I had a room of about 4m x 4m done in 2 days including drying time.

littlemousebigcheese · 07/03/2024 12:18

Ask your contractor? Then you'll stop worrying as you'll actually know!

Edited

I'm not sure it's all being done as part of the bigger job and the contractor will tell us, if that makes sense

We were £700 per room this time last year…if I was 10 years younger I’d be looking for a plastering apprenticeship!

Unfortunately we’re paying the price for years of no apprenticeships being served

RedDoughnut · 07/03/2024 12:22

Just paid £180. Not quite a full days work.

I did a plastering course so I could do my own. Sadly my back isn't up to it any more, but was a good course over two weekends.
