Does it bother you if you sense you are disliked?

Particularly if it’s at work or by a colleague etc.

When I was younger, it bothered me at work a lot. I was friendly and good at my job but when someone was unpleasant to me, I used to think it was something to do with me.

As I got more experience, I realised that some people are just arseholes and not as straight forward as I am. Often the nicer you are, the more badly these sort of people treat you. I thought I left all that behind at school but it was alive and well in a professional office environment, just a little more hidden.

It’s a shame really because it has made me less open to people. Now I don’t care what people think of me though, other than those I’m close to. Life has made me a much harder person than I used to be and I think that happens to a lot of people, women especially.

Notinthemood12 · 06/03/2024 21:15

No it doesn’t. Workplace is toxic and I look down on the gossips/ pigeons who need to flock together so no need to be liked by them.

icantwaitforsummer · 06/03/2024 21:35

God no, couldn't give a shit.

I'm a nice person, care about the colleagues that get me, but at the end of the day they aren't my friends or family.

I really don't give a shit, got far too much to think about in life rather than what some twat at work thinks of me.

As long as you are good at your job, work hard, be fair and polite that's all you need. If you do all of that and they still don't like you it's because they are a knob and I don't want to be friends with them anyway.

sittingingold · 06/03/2024 21:40

Yes, I've had this in a toxic workplace and from a sibling (nowhere else that I'm aware of) I assume they are unhappy and or jealous because if you're not you generally can't be arsed to hate anyone enough for them to be aware of it (apart from people who honk their snot in public Envy)

Loopytiles · 06/03/2024 21:41

Yes, because like a PP I don’t like lots of things about myself and how I behave at work and dislike and think I’m crap at aspects of the job.

V different in personal life, worry far less.

LadyNijo · 06/03/2024 21:41

Honestly, I’m interested in whether I like people. Their possible opinions of me are definitely secondary to that.

BreakfastAtMilliways · 06/03/2024 21:41

Unfortunately when it’s your manager or a senior colleague you have to work closely with, being disliked by them can make your working life quite unpleasant. I left just such a job because of the atmosphere.

Branleuse · 06/03/2024 21:46

It depends really. I enjoy being liked, and it's generally important to me to be liked or at least not be disliked by people I have to spend time with . As long as I don't feel unsafe around them then I don't care about random peoples opinions.

Gagagagagaga · 06/03/2024 21:48

It bothers me because they’re wrong 😁

SocksShmocks · 06/03/2024 21:52

Yes I can’t stand it and will either desperately try to get them to like me or decide I hate them too. It’s something I need to work on!

TesticularHeft · 06/03/2024 21:57

My last work place had a little clique. I was initially invited in and then although I spoke to everyone, no after work activities as a group but some were keen. They weren't my kind of people so it was fairly mutual and part of me was totally unbothered but part of me was upset. I believe it was our boss who didn't like me and I definitely didn't like her BUT I really didn't think she had any reason not to like me 😂 I'm really fucking nice!

Mistyhill · 06/03/2024 21:57

I don’t particularly mind unless I have to have a lot of contact with someone who clearly dislikes me. Unfortunately my brother in law obviously does and that makes things a bit awkward for me. I know he doesn’t much like me but we have to spend time together. We both cover up to an extent and then it becomes obvious again… I try not to mind but I’d rather choose not to spend time with him and I can’t!

Other people who dislike me I am able to avoid. Mostly people seem to quite like me.

DillDanding · 06/03/2024 21:59

I have actually never thought I am disliked. That’s says more about my opinion of myself than reality. 😂

TotalDramarama24 · 06/03/2024 22:15

Pre menopause - yes I would have been really bothered if I thought someone disliked me

Post menopause - genuinely couldn't give a shiny shit if someone likes me or not

PeggyBoard · 06/03/2024 23:34

I've never cared whether I'm liked or not by anyone, especially people at work.
I can't stand any of them, so they tend to keep out of my way where possible.
Fortunately I work in an office of my own so I don't need to speak to them unless it's necessary.

measurey · 07/03/2024 19:03

This is an in interesting discussion. It does annoy me if someone doesn't like me and shows it. Even if I don't like them to begin with. Particularly because I won't feel comfortable near that person and makes me wonder why I'm not liked... It might be reciprocal I guess as people feel it at some level and respond similarly. I do get in theory who gives a shit and no one really is interested in other people except their close ones. And that you can't make everyone like you.. But in practice yes it does bother me. I'm surprised to see it doesn't bother this many people...
