Anyone else completely unable to remember how old they or any member of their family is?

I have to Google "how old am I" and put in dates of birth.
Not once, but regularly.
I just had to do it for my son who I keep saying is 22. He's not. He's 23. I looked a right idiot on the phone just now trying to give information to access some autism services for him. I'm mortified!

I can't remember how old I am without checking. (I'm 50 apparently).

I mean, wtf is that about?

It's clearly not a numbers thing because I remember telephone numbers and postcodes from as far back as 40 years ago, I know my debit card and credit card numbers, expiry dates and last 3 numbers. I remember the alarm code from my first ever job. I remember the NI numbers for my entire family. I know my government gateway number, and all my login codes for everything, I remember random letter number combos I've used for strong passwords but I can't remember how old my kid is?! Or my other kid. Or my husband. Or myself!

It just keeps bloody changing, it’s similar to how long it can take some people (me) to remember to write the correct year after NY. I get it eventually because of how often I need to write a date, but it’s rare I have to remember an age.

People think I’m being coy when I say I’m in my 40’s - nope, just can’t be bothered to work out whereabouts in my 40’s I am right now!

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 06/03/2024 13:11

I normally have to do the maths, I can remember everyone's year of birth.

Dearg · 06/03/2024 13:14

I write their age next to their names when I mark up the calendar with their birthdays. including my own. But I do get muddled up when asked off the cuff. It’s just not very important.

IncompleteSenten · 06/03/2024 14:11

Glad it's not just me!

Yeah I have to sometimes check how old I am with my partner.

ShowOfHands · 06/03/2024 14:24

I remember dates of birth (and places of birth and obscure facts about people's births and so on). I have a remarkable memory for detail. This does not translate to knowing ages. I have to calculate people's ages using their DOB. I know DD is 16 as she wants a provisional driving licence for her next birthday and DS is 11 or 12, but I only know which if I calculate it. My age is sort of easy to work out because my year of birth ends in a 0, I know which decade I'm in and so if asked, I remember what year we're in and minus 1. It would be infinitely easier to just know ages, but no, no idea.

I can remember the exact lyrics to Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby circa 1990

But, for the life of me, I cannot remember how old I am.
Every time, I have to do a quick count in my head - even then I sometimes get it wrong.

Even weirder, I remember the year I was born, but often forget the day and month.
There have been times when I've got half way through the day and thought "look at that, it's my birthday today"

mindutopia · 06/03/2024 14:33

Dh and I have regularly not remembered how old his is - he's 7 years younger than me, btw, in his 30s and it's not age related. I can guess within about a year, give or take, but I get it wrong sometimes.

He had a head injury last year and the paramedic came and was asking him all sorts of questions to gauge his memory (like who is the prime minister? How old are you?). He couldn't remember and he looked at me and I couldn't remember, especially under stress at the time. And then I had to explain to the paramedic that this was normal and we never know how old he is. 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 06/03/2024 14:36

My birthday is very easy to remember and calculate my age from, fortunately. DDs and DHs aren't bad. Other people ... no chance.

its2024 · 06/03/2024 14:42

I was born in 81 so just have to remember the year and subtract 1, so this year will be 43!

Ditto. I was born in 1980 so just need to remember the year and subtract one. This works for at least 364 days of the year and the other is my birthday.

Waxdrip · 06/03/2024 16:59

I am constantly amazed that DH effortlessly remembers the year that we got married, times our DC were born and people's ages. I have to calculate all of it. Glad I'm not the only one.

SkaneTos · 06/03/2024 17:06

No, I can usually remember how old I am, and how old my closest family members and friends are.

But sometimes I make myself think that I am one year older - I am turning 37 years old this summer, so sometimes now I think to myself that I am 37 already, to "prepare" myself, even though I am currently 36.

DinnaeFashYersel · 06/03/2024 17:09

I remember how old my kids are but that is it.

Me, DH, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews etc - I have to work it out.

FookingGenius · 06/03/2024 17:13

My best friend from school, who is 6 weeks older than me, spent almost an entire year of her forties thinking she was a year younger than she was. Until I reminded her 😀

I don't think it's an age thing, my teenagers are convinced their youngest sibling is at least two years younger than he is at any time.

Sprogonthetyne · 06/03/2024 17:21

I know the decade (kid, teen, 20's, 30's ect), then work out the second digit from the current year.

My birth year ends in a 9 so the second digit is always one more then the last digit of the current year (eg. On my birthday this year, my age will end in 5).

DD was born in 2019, so same system applies.

DS was born in 2016, so he's current year plus 4.

This.

Taytocrisps · 06/03/2024 17:48

I usually have to work it out e.g. if I'm 21 I wish then big sister must be 26, 'cos she's 5 years older than me.

Bumblebeeinatree · 06/03/2024 17:50

I'm on a last digit 0 year so it's easy to calculate, except I'm close to the end of the year so it's mainly that minus one.

DowntonAgain · 06/03/2024 17:53

I know my kids ages, but I don’t know anyone else’s. I forget how old me and my partner are and I work it out from our date of birth. I’m 44, but lost track from late thirties. 🤣

I’m good at remembering others birthdays, but I don’t know years of birth for them so I can’t work out their ages.

MyLovelyPurse · 06/03/2024 18:48

This is so interesting! I am exactly the same. I generally have a really good memory of numbers and know the dates of birth of a huge number of people (extended family and friends) yet I have to think really hard to remember how old I am (and how old DH and the DCs are)
Exactly like a previous poster, I am always a year or so ahead of my real age. As soon as someone in the family has a birthday I am mentally preparing myself for their next one.

Temporaryanonymity · 06/03/2024 18:50

My father thinks I was born the year after I was actually born. As this makes me one year younger I’m sticking with it.

Mrsbeauxjingles · 06/03/2024 18:56

I only remember my age (sometimes I have to think for a minute), my husband and my son's ages.

Anyone else I never remember.

Why do you ask Google though? Why don't you think it from your head? Or say you were born in 86, put in the calendar 2024-1986. I would never think to ask google 😂

Noicant · 06/03/2024 18:59

I was really upset when DH told me my actual age once. I felt like I had lost a year of my life. And no can’t remember how old anyone else is at all either. I sometimes forget DD’s year of birth.

Mariannas · 06/03/2024 18:59

Have you always been like that or is it a new thing?
