Anyone else completely unable to remember how old they or any member of their family is?

I have to Google "how old am I" and put in dates of birth.
Not once, but regularly.
I just had to do it for my son who I keep saying is 22. He's not. He's 23. I looked a right idiot on the phone just now trying to give information to access some autism services for him. I'm mortified!

I can't remember how old I am without checking. (I'm 50 apparently).

I mean, wtf is that about?

It's clearly not a numbers thing because I remember telephone numbers and postcodes from as far back as 40 years ago, I know my debit card and credit card numbers, expiry dates and last 3 numbers. I remember the alarm code from my first ever job. I remember the NI numbers for my entire family. I know my government gateway number, and all my login codes for everything, I remember random letter number combos I've used for strong passwords but I can't remember how old my kid is?! Or my other kid. Or my husband. Or myself!

I only remember my age (sometimes I have to think for a minute), my husband and my son's ages.

Anyone else I never remember.

Why do you ask Google though? Why don't you think it from your head? Or say you were born in 86, put in the calendar 2024-1986. I would never think to ask google 😂

In the calculator I mean

AlwaysTheRenegade · 06/03/2024 19:04

You're not alone. I was insistent that my best friend and I were turning 34 this year, but we're turning 35. I really believed it so we got the calculator out aswell. I've lost a year and even my mum thought I was 33 😂

DappledThings · 06/03/2024 19:08

I know my own age and DC's ages. DH as well but I suspect it's because he was born the same year as me so most of the time it's the same as me.

My brother I have to subtract 3 from my age, my parents I have to calculate from their years of birth.

I have no idea how long I've been married either. I have to calculate that from the current year minus 2011 every time it comes up.

Last year I spent several months thinking I was 47, when in fact I was only 46, that was quite a pleasant surprise. I'm not too bad with the kids, as there's 2 years between each, so they're 21, 23 and 25...but the oldest turns 26 in July, whereas the younger 2 aren't until November, so that will mess up my system for a few months.
You're definitely not alone!!

I can't work it out.
I can't do anything to do with maths.

Which is clearly bollocks because if it's called finances I can do it. Budgets, tax returns, I run an 18month cash flow forecast for crying out loud. Put a £ in front of it and I'll maths the fuck out of it but other than that - complete mental block.

I'll count on my fingers, I'll grab a pen and I still am just blank. And even if I get it right I don't believe I've got it right so have to Google to check.

My dad was a maths teacher. I used to drive him potty.

Have you always been like that or is it a new thing?

Always. Ever since I can remember.

I have found my people! I thought it was just me!

treacledan71 · 06/03/2024 21:16

I only remember as the year I was born has a 0 on the end so easier to calculate. Think I woild struggle otherwise.

Floralnomad · 06/03/2024 21:18

I always know how old my adult children are but I never know how old I am - I work backwards from what birthday my sisters had .

CheeseDreamsTonight · 06/03/2024 21:28

I knew how old I was up until 26... then lost track. I know when I am 20 or 30 or 40 but all the in between... no idea. I do maths for everyone

mij66 · 06/03/2024 21:29

It is such a relief to be reading this thread, I thought I was losing it when I started forgetting how old I was a couple of years ago!

CrushingOnRubies · 06/03/2024 21:41

I can never remember how old I am. Unlike when you're a kid no asks your age every 10 minutes just your DOB so I honestly have to think about it for way too long

I'm done with everyone else's birthdays

MaMisled · 06/03/2024 21:48

I was thinking about what to get DS for his 29th birthday and ran some ideas for small gifts past DD. She felt I should get something bigger......as its actually 30th!

fridaynight1 · 06/03/2024 22:20

I don't know how old I am, nor do I know my phone number. And please don't ask me what the date is.

One particular memory that haunts me, was when I took my 18 month old to a hospital outpatients appointment. The lady at reception asked for her date of birth and I didn't know it. I had to ring DH and ask him.

A few weeks back, I had to take my elderly aunt to A&E and due to her age they asked her all kinds questions, including her age, what day it is, prime minister etc. She passed with flying colours - there isn't a hope in hells chance of me answering any of them. I have instructed my kids, when the time comes to tell them I'm fine 😋

MyLovelyPurse · 08/03/2024 18:22

@fridaynight1 I love ❤️ your post.

I have a PhD, hold down a very intellectually demanding job and generally function very well. I know any number of numbers off by heart such as bank passcode, NI number but:

  • not sure how old I am, or how old DCs or DPs are, unless I take a few minutes to calculate
  • would be hard pressed to say off the top of my head how long, eg. How long I have been doing my job, since DD1 graduated, when we got married, when I last had a covid jab, when I renewed house insurance, when had a mammogram, eye test, when my cat died, how long DD2 has been living at her address, etc etc. For all of these events you could tell me any year between 2016 and Jan 2024 and I would believe you
