Going to Glasgow.

Has anyone advice about where to stay in the city for a week?

I need to be near the University.

Ideally I'd like to be able to walk - or hop on a bus - to see places of interest. I am happy to walk a mile or two if it's not along a dual carriageway of lorries.

Though a hotel is possible, as it's more than a quick break. I was wondering about looking for Airbnb or some kind of short let apartment.

Parking not really an issue as will probably take train or fly.

Not bothered about anything luxurious - budget would probably not permit - though something with a bit of atmosphere - eg in more historic part of the city - would be a plus.

All ideas welcoome!

The West End is probably your best option outside the city centre. Look around the area to the south of Great Western Road and either side of Byres Road between Dumbarton Road and Great Western Road.
(assuming you mean Glasgow uni not Strathclyde!)

HemlockSoup · 06/03/2024 12:25

I presume you mean Glasgow University (as opposed to Strathclyde or Caledonian)?

If so then definitely look for an airbnb in the West End.

Aphotoaday · 06/03/2024 12:26

What university? Glasgow is west end, Strathclyde is city centre.

AnnaSewell · 06/03/2024 12:47

Yes. Glasgow University. (Sorry, you can tell I'm not Scots - though I am from a city which has at least three universities.)

Thanks.

I’ve posted a photo of the area on the map to look at on airbnb.
Avoid Anderston.
Finnieston, Kelvinbridge, Patrick, Dowanhill, Hillhead are all areas to look at.
Byres Road as right in the middle of the West End . The university is on University Avenue. Just to orientate you a bit looking at the map.
Maryhill and Knightswood are within walking distance .But they are a bit more run down, with fewer amenities. So try to stick in that more central area around Byres road .

@AnnaSewell you'll get a fun reception in Glasgow if you try and correct people on their use of Scots/Scottish!!!! I'll bring the popcorn 🍿

I can just wear a big badge saying Alien Oppressor if that might help. Though as I have no English blood that might confuse the issue....

The subway is probably the easiest way to get around much of the city. Several subway stations in the West End: Hillhead (on Byres Rd), Kelvinhall (on Dumbarton Rd near the bottom of Byres Rd), Partick (a bit further along Dumbarton Rd) and Kelvinbridge (on Great Western Rd). Partick is also a train station, and Glasgow has an extensive suburban rail network in addition to the subway (and buses too of course).

Something like this would be an ideal location. Walking distance to the Uni, moments from the underground and a couple of beautiful parks.
Lots of eateries, bars, shops, bakeries and a great cheesemonger and off-licence.

ismu · 06/03/2024 14:05

I think @BreakfastAtMimis is probably correct - no one would refer to themselves as being Scots. It's Scottish and if you speak the language, you speak Scots.
But no matter what, people who aren't actually from the country should probably not wade in telling those of us to live here how we should describe ourselves...

ismu · 06/03/2024 14:06

@AnnaSewell please don't even joke about being an English oppressor in Glasgow, I promise that won't go down well- at best frosty, at worst a nasty situation.

AnnaSewell · 06/03/2024 14:11

So Mary Queen of Scots means she was the best linguist? Just interested in the changes of usage.

Hopefully as I am coming to attend an international event, I will not trigger any uprising. Some of the time I shall also be in the Airbnb carefully avoiding micro-agressions.

Naptimeagain · 06/03/2024 14:20

You may be shocked to find that there may some Scottish people at an event in a Scottish university, I'm sure they'll be really interested on your views on Scots/Scottish identity.

Are you sure you're not English?

AnnaSewell · 06/03/2024 14:36

What a bizarre question. I have not and have never had historical links with any nation that has oppressed people North of the border. I am biracial and both my parents are from groups/races which are oppressed rather than oppressors. Like many people who do not live in Scotland I am unaware of the exact terms people who do live there - and whose roots are in that nation - use to signal their politics and identity. I hope that I shall be made welcome as a visitor and very much appreciate all the helpful information people have provided about areas of the city and how to get around.

SomeCatFromJapan · 06/03/2024 14:42

Christ can you all give the woman some help and stop being pissy about the linguistics, I'm sure she didn't set out to offend.

SomeCatFromJapan · 06/03/2024 14:49

OP I'd agree stay in the West End - not only is it near Glasgow Uni but it's by far the nicest part of the city and great to walk around in as well as being good for buses and the underground.
A nice thing to do if you have time is the bus tour - it actually covers a very large area of the city and gives you a good flavour of the highlights.
The city centre is a bit run down at present.

Wbeezer · 06/03/2024 14:52

At least she didn't call us Scotch!

SomeCatFromJapan · 06/03/2024 14:53

At least she didn't call us Scotch!

Now as long as she doesn't try and order one in a bar she'll be just fine.

AnnaSewell · 06/03/2024 14:57

So you ask/one asks for whisky?

Is there a book where the rules are written down?

OP posts:
NotFastButFurious · 06/03/2024 15:09

you only ask for Scotch in a bar if you're American!

Blueberrycreampie · 06/03/2024 15:10

I am a Glaswegian but living in England. If this is your first time visiting Scotland, and in particular Glasgow, you will find 99% of the people will go out of their way to be friendly, You will love it. I have stayed in 2 Air bnbs near the University of Glasgow and both have been superb in different ways. One was just up from Hillhead Subway and one across the road from Kelvinbridge subway. The one I stayed in a few months ago was in North Woodside Road and run by Kieran. There are lots of great Air bnbs around there and it's just a great area to be in.
