Going to Glasgow.

Has anyone advice about where to stay in the city for a week?

I need to be near the University.

Ideally I'd like to be able to walk - or hop on a bus - to see places of interest. I am happy to walk a mile or two if it's not along a dual carriageway of lorries.

Though a hotel is possible, as it's more than a quick break. I was wondering about looking for Airbnb or some kind of short let apartment.

Parking not really an issue as will probably take train or fly.

Not bothered about anything luxurious - budget would probably not permit - though something with a bit of atmosphere - eg in more historic part of the city - would be a plus.

All ideas welcoome!

So you ask/one asks for whisky?

Is there a book where the rules are written down?

When in Scotland, order it by the name of the whisky you would like, ie Macallan and the age eg 10 year old. You’ll get a blank look if you ask for a whisky and a stare if you ask for a scotch. No rules required, except our spelling of it. It is protected. Rest of the world has whiskey.

So, a briefing meeting when I arrive?

Or do I just post everytime I'm baffled and you sort me out.

You'll be fine 😂 everyone will be lovely and helpful.
You can say whisky if you're ordering a whisky and coke, then you'll get a blend.
If you put coke in a malt you may make people sad though.

It's Scottish, not Scots.

Edited

And you wonder why we get a bad name

AnnaSewell · 06/03/2024 15:45

The IDEA that I would put coke in my 10 year old Laphroaig. What do you think I am? A savage???

(Water maybe.)

It's absolutely feral behaviour, isn't it?

Do update us when you've got a definite on where you are staying and I'm sure you'll get lots more advice on nice places to eat, drink, see etc.

Will do! Glad I posted.

I know!

OP, people in Glasgow are super-friendly and also very much up for a laugh. I'd go so far as to say enjoying people being funny, and being funny yourself, is expected.

It's a small enough city to walk easily (the bits you'll want to see anyway). I agree with those saying the West End is the nicest bit to stay in, although the Southside now has a lot going on too. West End is better for the uni though.

I lived there for seven years, a long time ago now, but it still has a very special place in my heart.

@AnnaSewell you'll get a fun reception in Glasgow if you try and correct people on their use of Scots/Scottish!!!! I'll bring the popcorn 🍿

I'll bring the drinks! You might find it hard going @AnnaSewell if you're going to be rude and dismissive.

Yes. Glasgow University. (Sorry, you can tell I'm not Scots - though I am from a city which has at least three universities.)

Thanks.

Glasgow also has three universities.

Blueberrycreampie · 06/03/2024 17:34

@MarkWithaC Have lived in both the West End and South Side and both great but yes, West End better for the university.
