Can I get my job back?

Meltedcheeses · 05/03/2024 13:36

This weekend (I'm not meant to work weekends) I ended up managing a small crisis for the company.

Throughout I tried to contact my boss and sent messages he didn't reply.

I did not have the authority to take the action needed. The company ended up losing several thousand pounds. On Monday I offered my resignation saying I felt it honourable.

To my surprise it was accepted.

Its a small business with no HR.

Looking for tips to leave things as positive as possible. Was immediately asked to leave having resigned.

@Meltedcheeses I know I called your resignation naïve, but don't change your ethics. It came from a good place so don't change who you are. But maybe look out for your self interests a bit more in the future!

Meltedcheeses · 05/03/2024 14:11

The second. I didn't take the action needed because I knew I lacked the authority so I messaged my boss asking for his permission or advice.

The cause of the loss was a tech failure which isn't my responsibility.

Sorry OP I misunderstood and thought the former!!

How easy do you think it would be to find another job? Like others have said you could try and explain you handed in your resignation in the heat of the moment and ask to retract it. But do you really want to work somewhere you’re doing unpaid work over weekends that sounds like it could be quite stressful?

They don’t sound good to work for so this might just be your lucky escape

Oh wow. Thanks.

Two colleagues contacted me and basically said some really nice things. They think I'm better off out.

I am very conscientious. I always think...if a bit of extra work will help..ill just crack on.

I've reported directly to the CEO for years. I don't expect them to respond even in working hours other than to their own set of priorities...but no response on something I know will go to board...just not experienced it.

I really loved the job.

The CEO is quite laid back.

Thank you so much. I agree resigning was ridiculous for my self interests but I just could only see otherwise a situation where I'd have to stand up and report figures and not give the explanation

Why wouldn’t you give the explanation?!

Am I missing something here . Why would it be “honourable” to resign because you couldn’t get hold of your boss?

ToodlePipSdqueak · 05/03/2024 16:12

I think you are better off out and they've shown their true colours!!

Yes this and also weren't you going above and beyond your job description anyway? So the error was nothing to do with you?

solarised · 05/03/2024 16:43

I'm not clear what's happened here. Are they trying to say you were at fault?

Owl55 · 05/03/2024 16:46

He’s accepted your resignation to cover up his own inadequacy. Good luck in your next job .

ScouseOfCards · 05/03/2024 17:02

I think you've been hasty and naiive, by resigning when you in fact had done nothing wrong you've put your own head above the parapet and at the same time have protected your manager who will be able to point the finger at you.

However, the fact they said they were minded not to pay you notice sets a massive alarm bell ringing. They cannot do that, and you're owed accrued holiday too. So overall, you probably are better of out of there and agreeing a standard reference with them.

But take it as a learning experience not to immediately resign without thinking everything through and having something else to go to.

NewYearSameShizzle · 05/03/2024 17:30

They can now blame this loss on you, that's the problem. 'Melted' was supposed to sort this and she didn't so we've lost thousands, she had to go.....

ObliviousCoalmine · 05/03/2024 19:28

What happened is that I regularly check our systems out of hours for any anomalies. These are frequent. Everyone knows I do this even though it's not a requirement.

Stop working for free. Stop doing things that even the CEO doesn't bother to do.

You shouldn't even have been in this situation, you put yourself in it by doing something that nobody has asked you to do and now you've been hoisted by your own 'honourable' petard, and probably scapegoated.

I hope you're in a union?

Meltedcheeses · 05/03/2024 22:48

Thank you so much. My life is a mess now and your words help.

Today my boss agreed to pay holiday pay owed. O only thought of that because of a poster here.

I asked for a reference and got no reply.

Good luck next role you find Melted

Mazuslongtoenail · 30/03/2024 18:07

What happened in the end @Meltedcheeses ? Did you manage to stay on?

Meltedcheeses · 31/03/2024 09:51

No! I realised I was better off out. I'm down to final two for a job with a 30% pay rise.

I've also been told they've had a terrible month saleswise since I left.

They tried to get out of paying my notice and holiday pay and having some time to reflect the set up wasn't sustainable.

Thank you so much for thinking of me and asking.

Wow @Meltedcheeses you rock star. Best of luck, hope you get it.

Bestyearever2024 · 31/03/2024 10:07

Thank goodness you DID resign if the Company is in such a pickle

But you did nothing wrong. Absolutely nothing

The CEO is solely to blame for this mess

I hope you get the new job

Definitely a lucky escape then! Congratulations on the job offers Easter Smile

I think you wanted them to say no please don’t go …but they didn’t

Nicetobenice67 · 31/03/2024 10:19

knee jerk reaction

MiltonNorthern · 31/03/2024 10:24

Better off out of it for sure - but why on gods green earth were you checking for issues at the weekend when you don't have the authority to do anything about them? Never ever put yourself in such a stupid position again. You spent all weekend worrying and trying to fix an issue that wasn't your responsibility and you ended up losing your job over it. There's conscientious and there's being a martyr and that's what you did to yourself. By all means stay late until the task is done but out of hours stay well away from everything.

PotatoPudding · 31/03/2024 10:28

I wouldn’t want to work for a company that obviously didn’t want me there.

Nicetobenice67 · 31/03/2024 10:29

Totally better off out of there absolutely no appreciation for you there loss not yours

SD1978 · 31/03/2024 10:31

I think you were daft to offer notice on something that if you were questioned about, you had a clear timeline of why this wasn't your fault, seems unnecessarily martyr like, but good luck with the interviews, because it also sounds like you're best out of a place you were unofficially saving their arses every weekend until you couldn't

SheepAndSword · 31/03/2024 10:35

They sound awful, trying to wriggle out of money they owe you.

Yes CEO will try to land the blame on you.

Good luck with moving on.
